Chapter 8 - THE GRAVE THAT WAS EMPTYThe Moretti family cemetery was surrounded by iron fencing.

Dominic had not visited it in years.
He had avoided it.
Too many memories.
Too many lies.
Now he stood in front of his father's grave.
The gravestone still carried Victor's name.
The dates.
The polished marble.
The flowers.
Everything looked untouched.
Dominic stared at the grave.
“This is where I buried him.”
Lydia stood beside him.
“You buried an empty coffin.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
He felt sick.
“How could nobody know?”
“Because Victor paid everyone.”
“Everyone?”
“Doctors. Lawyers. Funeral directors. Police.”
Dominic looked at the grave.
“And my mother?”
“She knew.”
“Then why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she believed Victor would kill you.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“My entire childhood was a lie.”
Lydia touched his shoulder.
“Not everything.”
“What wasn't?”
“Your mother's love.”
Dominic looked at her.
Lydia smiled sadly.
“She loved you.”
Adrian arrived with Marco.
He carried an old metal case.
“Victor told me where to look.”
Dominic stared.
“Before he lost consciousness?”
Adrian nodded.
“He told me years ago.”
Dominic looked at him.
“You've known all this time?”
“I knew pieces.”
“You should have told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Adrian didn't answer.
Marco stepped toward the gravestone.
“There.”
A small symbol had been carved beneath the date.
The Moretti crest.
Adrian inserted a narrow key.
Nothing happened.
Lily suddenly walked closer.
Dominic stopped her.
“Stay back.”
She pointed toward the stone.
“Daddy said that wasn't the door.”
Dominic looked at her.
“What door?”
She pointed toward an old angel statue.
“The door is behind her.”
They moved the statue.
A hidden metal panel appeared.
Dominic stared.
“How did a three-year-old know that?”
Lydia answered.
“Adrian showed her.”
They opened the panel.
A staircase descended beneath the cemetery.
The air was cold.
Dominic took a flashlight.
They went down.
At the bottom was another room.
Unlike the chapel vault, this one was completely empty.
Except for a single table.
On it sat a wooden box.
Dominic opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And a small silver pendant.
He recognized it.
His mother had worn one exactly like it.
He opened the letter.
To my children,
If you found this room, then I failed to keep the truth hidden.
Dominic's hands shook.
Your father and I built the Moretti family on a promise.
That promise was broken when Victor chose power over his children.
Dominic looked at Adrian.
They continued reading together.
The original trust does not belong to Victor.
It does not belong to Dominic.
It does not belong to Adrian.
It belongs to the descendants who were born outside the family's control.
Dominic looked toward Lily.
Lydia nodded.
The letter continued.
The first descendant is Ethan.
Dominic froze.
Then:
The second is Lily.
Both children.
The trust had been designed to protect them.
Not one.
Both.
If either child died, the assets would remain frozen.
Nobody could inherit them.
That meant the attacks had been pointless.
Samuel couldn't gain the money by killing one child.
Victor couldn't control the trust.
Neither could Dominic.
The children were protected.
Dominic exhaled.
“Then why did everyone fight over them?”
Lydia looked at the final page.
“Because there's another clause.”
Dominic read.
If both heirs voluntarily transfer their rights to a living adult guardian, the guardian receives temporary control.
Dominic frowned.
“That's dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“Who is listed as guardian?”
Lydia looked away.
Dominic read the name.
Eleanor Moretti.
His mother's name.
His blood ran cold.
“She was supposed to control everything.”
“Yes.”
“After she died?”
“The trust should have transferred to the court.”
“But it didn't.”
Lydia shook her head.
“Because Eleanor never died.”
Dominic stared.
“What?”
Adrian stepped back.
“No.”
Lydia looked at them.
“Your mother is alive.”
Dominic felt dizzy.
“Where?”
Lydia pointed toward the ceiling.
“She's been living beneath this cemetery.”
Dominic couldn't speak.
He turned toward the stone stairs.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“You finally came.”
Dominic froze.
A woman stepped into the light.
Gray hair.
Pale face.
Tired eyes.
Eleanor.
His mother.
Alive.
Dominic stared at her.
For a moment, he was twelve years old again.
He wanted to run to her.
Instead, anger took over.
“You lied to me.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Dad was dead.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Adrian was dead.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lydia was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Lily.”
“Yes.”
Dominic's voice cracked.
“Why?”
Eleanor began crying.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You destroyed my life.”
“I know.”
“You let me bury people who weren't dead.”
“I know.”
“You let me hate Adrian.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Eleanor looked toward Lily.
“Because your father threatened to kill both children.”
Silence.
Dominic looked at the little girl.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“He wasn't always the monster you think he is.”
Dominic stared.
“Then who was?”
Eleanor whispered:
“Samuel.”
Dominic shook his head.
“Samuel worked for Dad.”
“No.”
Eleanor's eyes filled with fear.
“Samuel controlled your father.”
Dominic froze.
“He manipulated Victor.”
“Yes.”
“He manipulated Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“Claire?”
“Yes.”
“Everyone?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor looked toward the door.
“He has one final target.”
Dominic's heart pounded.
“Who?”
Eleanor looked directly at him.
“You.”
Dominic stared.
“Why me?”
“Because the original trust has one final condition.”
She pointed toward the wooden box.
“If you die…”
She paused.
“…the entire Moretti empire transfers to the person who can prove he is the rightful heir.”
Dominic looked at Lily.
Then Ethan.
Then Adrian.
He finally understood.
The war had never been about money alone.
It was about succession.
Someone wanted to eliminate every legitimate heir.
And if they succeeded…
they could claim everything.
Suddenly, the cemetery doors slammed shut.
Marco reached for his weapon.
A voice echoed from above.
“Eleanor.”
She froze.
Samuel.
He had found them.
“Come upstairs.”
Eleanor whispered:
“He knows.”
Dominic stepped in front of her.
“Stay behind me.”
The lights went out.
Then Samuel spoke again.
“You've spent your entire life believing your family was protecting you.”
A pause.
“They weren't.”
Dominic looked toward the stairs.
Samuel's voice became colder.
“They were protecting themselves.”
A gunshot struck the ceiling.
Dust fell.
Then another.
The children screamed.
Dominic grabbed Ethan.
Adrian grabbed Lily.
Lydia moved Eleanor toward the hidden exit.
Marco shouted:
“Move!”
They ran through the underground passage.
Behind them, Samuel entered the vault.
Dominic looked back once.
Samuel stood beside the wooden box.
He wasn't chasing them.
He was smiling.
May you like
Because he had already taken something.
The original trust.
