Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
The gun was not pointed at me.
That was somehow worse.
Marcus stood in my office doorway, his hand shaking slightly, the weapon hanging beside his leg.
For thirty years, I had trusted that man with my business.
My home.
My secrets.
I had trusted him more than family.
And now he was standing in the room where I kept my most precious memories, holding the one thing that could turn this nightmare into something much darker.
Noah was still outside the office.
Claudia was behind me.
And Marcus was between me and the truth.
“Marcus,” I said slowly.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Cold.
“What are you doing?””
He looked at the gun in his hand as if he had forgotten it was there.
Then he looked back at me.
“Richard…”
The way he said my name hurt more than anger would have.
It sounded like an apology.
A goodbye.
“Put it down.””
For a moment, I thought he would.
I thought the man who had sat beside me at Elena’s funeral would remember who I was.
But then Claudia stepped into the hallway.
And everything changed.
“Marcus,” she said.
One word.
A command.
Not a request.
His shoulders stiffened.
That was when I understood.
He wasn’t here by accident.
He wasn’t here because he was worried.
He was here because Claudia called him.
I looked at her.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“How long have you both been lying to me?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Richard, you need to listen.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“Not this time.””
The office felt smaller.
The walls that had always protected me suddenly felt like they were closing in.
“You stood next to me when I buried my daughter.””
Marcus looked away.
“You hugged me.””
I stepped closer.
“You told me she was gone.””
His jaw tightened.
“Richard…”
“You knew.””
The word came out quietly.
“You knew Elena was alive.””
The silence answered.
My chest tightened.
Because a small part of me had hoped I was wrong.
A small part of me had hoped there was another explanation.
But there wasn’t.
Marcus had known.
My oldest friend had watched me suffer.
And he had said nothing.
Claudia walked into the office.
“You’re making this emotional.””
I turned toward her.
“Emotional?””
She glanced at Noah, who was standing near the doorway, holding the wooden airplane.
“Yes.””
Her expression hardened.
“You’re letting a child and a recording control your judgment.””
I stared at her.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You’re not frightening me anymore.””
For the first time that night, Claudia looked uncertain.
Because fear was the only thing she had ever used against me.
Fear of losing my daughter.
Fear of losing my family.
Fear of the truth.
But she had already taken everything.
There was nothing left to threaten.
Marcus lowered the gun slightly.
“Richard, I never wanted this.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did you do it?””
He swallowed.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone who betrayed me used the same excuse.
Protection.
Always protection.
“You protected me by letting me believe my daughter was dead?””
His face broke.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Marcus looked toward Claudia.
And that small movement told me everything.
He was afraid of her.
Not loyal.
Afraid.
“I found out something five years ago,” he said.
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“The night Elena disappeared.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“You were there?””
“No.””
“Then how?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because she called me.””
The room went silent.
My daughter had called him.
Not me.
Him.
“Why would Elena call you?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Because she thought she couldn’t trust anyone else.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
“She thought she couldn’t trust me?””
“No.””
He shook his head quickly.
“She loved you.””
“Then why not call me?””
Marcus looked at Claudia.
And I understood.
Because Claudia had made sure she couldn’t.
“She told Elena you were being watched,” Marcus said.
“She told her that anyone who contacted you would put you in danger.””
I looked at Claudia.
She didn’t deny it.
“Continue.””
Marcus exhaled.
“Elena told me she found financial records.””
My expression changed.
“What kind of records?””
“Transfers.””
“From where?””
He hesitated.
“Your company accounts.””
The room went quiet.
My company.
The empire I had spent forty years building.
The one thing I thought I controlled.
“Claudia was stealing from me?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“It was more complicated.””
“Nothing is complicated when someone steals from you.””
“She wasn’t just taking money.””
His voice dropped.
“She was moving it.””
“Where?””
Marcus looked at the computer screen.
At the frozen video from Elena.
Then back at me.
“Into accounts connected to someone else.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me more.
Because both of them knew.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Claudia.
She gave him a warning look.
A silent message.
Don’t speak.
But Marcus was tired.
I could see it.
Five years of carrying the secret had finally broken him.
“Richard…”
He whispered.
“The person behind everything…”
A loud crash interrupted him.
The office window shattered.
Everyone screamed.
The lights flickered.
Noah cried out.
I immediately turned toward him.
“Get down!””
I grabbed Noah and pulled him behind the desk.
Another sound followed.
Not glass.
A car door.
Someone outside.
Someone had been watching the house.
Claudia moved quickly toward the hallway.
Marcus grabbed her arm.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You brought them here?””
His face changed.
“I didn’t.””
That was the first time I saw genuine fear on Claudia’s face.
Not the fear of being exposed.
The fear of losing control.
The guests were shouting in the dining room.
Phones were lighting up.
The entire house had become chaos.
I held Noah close.
The little boy was shaking.
“Grandpa…”
I looked down.
“Yes?””
“Is Mommy coming?””
That question almost destroyed me.
Because I didn’t have an answer.
I didn’t know where Elena was.
I didn’t know if she was safe.
I didn’t know how many people had lied to me.
But I knew one thing.
I would not lose another child.
“Noah,” I whispered.
“I promise you.””
He looked at me.
“I’m going to find your mom.””
The words had barely left my mouth when the office computer suddenly turned on again.
The corrupted video disappeared.
A new file appeared.
Someone had remotely accessed the computer.
The screen showed a live video.
Elena.
My daughter.
Sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
But terrified.
“Dad…”
Her voice came through the speakers.
Everyone froze.
Claudia took one step back.
Marcus whispered:
“No…”
Elena looked directly into the camera.
“Dad, if you’re seeing this, it means they already found Noah.””
I held my breath.
Then Elena said:
“And it means I was right about Marcus.””
Marcus went completely still.
The room became silent.
I slowly turned toward my oldest friend.
Elena continued:
“He wasn’t helping Claudia because she threatened him.””
My eyes locked with his.
“He helped her because five years ago…”
The video cut for a second.
Then returned.
Elena’s face filled the screen.
May you like
And the next words changed everything.
“Marcus was the one who made sure I never came home.””
