Chapter 9: The Grandson I Never Knew
I read the name again.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
*Father: Richard Bellacorte.*
The hallway blurred around me.
The sounds of the mountain resort disappeared.
The guests.
The alarms.
The storm outside.
Everything faded.
There was only that piece of paper glowing on my phone.
A birth certificate.
A child.
My grandson.
My hands began to shake.
Not from fear.
From the impossible weight of a truth that had been hidden from me.
Noah wasn’t just Elena’s son.
He was mine.
Not biologically.
Not literally.
But in every way that mattered.
He was my family.
My blood.
My legacy.
A child I had spent years unknowingly searching for.
I leaned against the wall.
“No…”
The word escaped my mouth.
Because suddenly every memory of Elena changed.
The way she used to talk about children.
The way she asked me strange questions.
The way she once told me:
“Dad, someday you’ll understand what it feels like to love someone more than yourself.””
I thought she was talking about the future.
She was talking about Noah.
My grandson.
A child who had been standing outside in the snow on my birthday.
A child who had made me a wooden airplane because someone told him his grandfather loved them.
I closed my eyes.
And the guilt came.
A wave so powerful I almost couldn’t breathe.
For three years, that boy had existed.
Three years.
And I had never held him.
Never heard his first word.
Never watched him take his first steps.
Never knew he was alive.
Because someone stole those moments from me.
My phone buzzed again.
A message from Elena.
*Dad, please call me.*
I immediately pressed the number.
This time, she answered.
“Dad?””
Her voice sounded broken.
“Elena.””
I sat down on the floor.
“I know.””
Silence.
Then:
“You found out.””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“Found out?””
My voice cracked.
“My grandson was living somewhere in this world, and I didn’t even know his name.””
“Dad…”
“No.””
I wiped my face.
“Let me understand.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Was he really mine?””
A long pause.
Then Elena whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed me.
Not because it hurt.
Because it healed something I didn’t know was broken.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her breathing changed.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Before everything happened.””
“Then why?””
“Because Claudia found out.””
I stood.
“What does she have to do with Noah?””
Elena was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Elena.””
“Dad…”
Her voice trembled.
“There’s something I never told you.””
I waited.
“When I got pregnant, Claudia wasn’t just interested in your money.””
“What then?””
“She was interested in Noah.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“She believed he could give her control over everything.””
I frowned.
“How?””
Elena took a breath.
“Because of your will.””
My heart stopped.
“My will?””
“Yes.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“My inheritance?””
“Yes.””
I looked toward the hallway where Noah had disappeared.
“She knew?””
“She knew that if something happened to me, you would change everything to protect him.””
I understood.
Claudia wasn’t just trying to hide a child.
She was trying to remove the person who could change my decisions.
“She wanted Noah gone.””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
“I ran.””
The word was quiet.
Honest.
“I ran because I realized nobody around me was safe.””
I sat down again.
“Not even me?””
A pause.
Then Elena answered:
“Especially not you.””
The words hurt.
But I needed to hear them.
“Why?””
“Because Claudia wasn’t working alone.””
I looked around.
The empty hallway.
The locked doors.
The storm outside.
“Who else?””
Elena hesitated.
“Dad…”
“Who?””
Her voice dropped.
“The person who created the entire plan.””
I waited.
“He’s the reason Claudia had access to your company.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, another sound interrupted the call.
A door opening.
“Elena?””
Her breathing changed.
“Dad, I have to go.””
“No.””
I stood.
“Not again.””
“I love you.””
The words hit me.
Because I had spent five years wondering if I would ever hear them again.
“Elena, wait.””
But the line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Marcus stood there.
Noah was beside him.
The little boy immediately ran toward me.
“Grandpa!””
I caught him.
Held him.
Really held him.
For the first time.
He wrapped his arms around my neck.
And something inside me broke.
All the years.
All the lost time.
All the moments I could never get back.
I held him tighter.
“I’m sorry.””
Noah pulled back.
“For what?””
I looked into his eyes.
Because he was too young to understand.
Too young to know adults had failed him.
“I should have found you sooner.””
He touched my face.
Like he was comforting me.
“Mommy said you would.””
That sentence almost made me cry.
Marcus stood nearby.
Watching.
Quiet.
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew Noah was my grandson.””
“Yes.””
“Before tonight?””
A painful pause.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
Marcus looked down.
“Since he was born.””
The anger returned.
“You knew for three years.””
“I was trying to protect him.””
“By hiding him from me?””
His eyes filled.
“I thought Claudia would find him if anyone knew.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But I also saw the exhaustion on his face.
He had been carrying something too.
“Tell me everything.””
Marcus nodded.
“The night Elena disappeared, she left evidence.””
“What kind?””
“Proof that Claudia and someone else were planning to take over your company.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward the dark hallway.
Then whispered:
“I think you already know.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a folder.
Not a digital file.
Not a recording.
Something old.
Paper.
He handed it to me.
“I found this in Elena’s safe.””
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Contracts.
Transfers.
Ownership changes.
Then I saw the signature.
My blood went cold.
Because it was real.
Not forged.
Not copied.
A signature I recognized.
The person who approved the transfer of millions from my company.
The person who helped Claudia gain control.
The person Elena was afraid of.
My hands shook.
Because the name at the bottom was:
*Thomas Bellacorte.*
My younger brother.
My own family.
Marcus watched my face.
“I’m sorry.””
I couldn’t speak.
Thomas.
The man I had trusted.
The man who had helped me build my first business.
The man who had stood beside me at Elena’s funeral.
Another person who knew.
Another person who lied.
The storm outside grew louder.
Then every screen in the resort turned on.
The televisions.
The security monitors.
The dining room display.
All of them showed the same image.
A live video.
Thomas Bellacorte sitting in a dark room.
He looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
His voice echoed through the resort.
“I know you found Noah.””
I stepped closer to the screen.
“Thomas…”
He smiled wider.
“You always were too sentimental.””
My fists tightened.
“Where is my daughter?””
Thomas leaned back.
“That depends.””
“On what?””
His expression became cold.
“On whether you’re willing to give me what I wanted five years ago.””
The screen flickered.
Then a second image appeared.
Elena.
Alive.
Standing behind him.
My heart stopped.
Thomas looked at the camera.
“You want your daughter back?””
I stared.
“Yes.””
“Then come alone.””
A pause.
“And bring the original company documents.””
I looked at the folder in my hand.
Thomas smiled.
“Because if you don’t…”
He turned toward Elena.
May you like
And she looked terrified.
“…you’ll lose your daughter a second time.””
