Chapter 4: The Woman in the Photograph

The ballroom doors swung open.

Sarah grabbed Maya and pulled her behind her.

Evelyn stood frozen in the center of the marble floor, the phone still pressed against her ear.

Outside, Dr. Whitaker was gone.

Only the black sedan remained across the street.

“Where did he go?”” Evelyn whispered.

Sarah stared through the glass.

“He wouldn't leave.””

“What do you mean?””

“He wanted us to see him.””

Evelyn lowered the phone.

“Then why disappear?””

Sarah looked at the doors.

“Because somebody else is coming.””

Footsteps echoed from the corridor.

Maya clutched Sarah's coat.

“Mom…”

“Stay behind me.””

A hotel security guard appeared first.

Then a man in a black suit.

Evelyn recognized him immediately.

“Marcus?””

Her longtime attorney approached with a leather folder tucked beneath one arm.

“I've been trying to reach you.””

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“How did you get here?””

“You called me twenty minutes ago.””

“I didn't.””

Marcus stopped.

His gaze moved from Evelyn to Sarah.

Then to Maya.

His expression changed.

“Who's the child?””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I know you.””

Sarah's face hardened.

“No, you don't.””

“I've seen your photograph.””

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

“What photograph?””

Marcus opened the folder.

“Your father kept an archive.””

Sarah's breathing changed.

“What kind of archive?””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“The kind he never wanted you to find.””

He removed a thick envelope.

Evelyn recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her father's.

She reached for it.

Marcus didn't let go.

“There are conditions.””

Evelyn stared.

“Conditions?””

“He instructed me to release this only if you ever discovered evidence that your daughter survived.””

The words landed like a gunshot.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Maya whispered, “My daughter?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“My baby.””

Marcus released the envelope.

Evelyn tore it open.

Inside were several photographs.

Hospital corridors.

A newborn nursery.

A parking garage.

Her father standing beside Dr. Whitaker.

And then—

Evelyn's hands stopped.

A photograph of a young Sarah.

She was holding a baby.

Not Maya as she looked now.

A newborn.

Wrapped in a pale blanket.

Sarah was crying.

On the back was a date.

The same date as Maya's birth.

Evelyn looked at Sarah.

“You had her.””

Sarah's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“You took my baby.””

“No.””

“Then why are you holding her?””

“Because someone gave her to me.””

“Who?””

Sarah looked at Marcus.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Mrs. Hayes…”

“Who?””

Sarah's voice broke.

“Your father.””

Evelyn staggered backward.

“No.””

“He came to my mother's apartment that night.””

“He would never—”

“He put the baby in my arms.””

“You're lying.””

“I wish I were.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“He told me your daughter was alive, but if you knew, she would never survive.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“My father loved me.””

Sarah's expression was devastated.

“He loved his empire.””

Silence.

Evelyn looked down at the photograph again.

“Why you?””

Sarah swallowed.

“Because my mother worked at the hospital.””

“And?””

“She knew what was happening.””

“What was happening?””

Sarah's voice dropped.

“Babies were being moved.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“What babies?””

“Babies whose families had money.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Not just money.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus opened another document.

“Your father wasn't selling children.””

Sarah's eyes hardened.

“He was exchanging them.””

Evelyn looked confused.

“For what?””

Marcus placed a ledger on the table.

“Political influence. Business favors. Medical contracts. Debts.””

Evelyn's fingers curled.

“My daughter was a transaction?””

Marcus didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Maya stepped forward.

“So who is my father?””

Sarah looked at her.

“Maya, please.””

“Who is he?””

Evelyn's eyes moved between them.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Who is her father?””

Sarah looked down.

“I don't know.””

Evelyn slammed her palm onto the table.

“Everyone knows something except me!””

Her voice cracked across the empty ballroom.

Maya flinched.

Evelyn immediately softened.

“I'm sorry.””

She crouched in front of the girl.

“I didn't mean to scare you.””

Maya studied her.

“Are you really my grandmother?””

Evelyn couldn't speak for a moment.

Then she nodded.

“I think I am.””

Maya reached toward the locket.

“Then why didn't you come for me?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought you were dead.””

Maya looked down.

“I wasn't.””

“No.””

Evelyn touched the girl's cheek.

“You weren't.””

Sarah watched them.

For a brief moment, the anger disappeared.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

His face changed.

“Where?””

Sarah immediately knew.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at her.

“The security cameras outside just went down.””

Evelyn stood.

“Whitaker?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

He hesitated.

“The cameras inside the hotel went down too.””

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the ballroom went dark.

Maya gasped.

Sarah grabbed her.

“Stay with me.””

A man's voice came from somewhere in the darkness.

“Evelyn.””

Everyone froze.

The voice was calm.

Close.

Too close.

Evelyn whispered, “Whitaker?””

A match struck.

A tiny flame appeared near the far end of the ballroom.

For one second, they saw a silhouette.

Not Dr. Whitaker.

A woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Holding something against her chest.

The flame went out.

Then the emergency lights came on.

The woman was gone.

But on the marble floor lay a photograph.

Evelyn picked it up.

Her hands began shaking.

It showed a newborn baby.

Beside the baby was a hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was not Maya.

It was Evelyn's own name.

And beneath it was another handwritten line:

*Your daughter was never the child they told you about.*
