Chapter 6: Claire's Confession

Claire walked into the ballroom.

Sarah stepped backward.

Maya moved closer to Evelyn without realizing it.

Evelyn noticed.

She placed a protective hand on the girl's shoulder.

“Stay here.””

Claire looked at Maya.

Her expression softened.

“You have her eyes.””

Evelyn's body went rigid.

“Whose?””

Claire didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at the locket.

“May I?””

Evelyn held it tighter.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“Good.””

Sarah stared at her.

“You knew she'd have it.””

“I knew she'd find it.””

“You knew Maya was alive?””

Claire's eyes shifted toward the girl.

“I knew one of them was.””

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

“One of them?””

Claire approached the table.

“There were two babies that night.””

“We know,” Marcus said.

Claire glanced at him.

“Do you?””

She opened her handbag.

Inside were dozens of old documents.

Hospital forms.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Letters.

She placed them on the marble table one by one.

Evelyn stared.

“Where did you get these?””

“Thomas.””

“He gave you his records?””

“He gave me his confession.””

Sarah shook her head.

“Why would he trust you?””

“Because he was dying.””

Evelyn stared.

“Dying?””

“Cancer.””

“Then why did he come after Maya?””

Claire looked at Sarah.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of the person who paid him.””

The ballroom fell silent.

Evelyn looked at the papers.

“Who?””

Claire didn't answer.

She pulled out a photograph.

A much younger woman stood beside Evelyn's father.

Evelyn recognized the woman.

Her own mother.

She hadn't seen that photograph in decades.

Her fingers trembled.

“My mother?””

Claire nodded.

“She was involved.””

Evelyn's face hardened.

“My mother died before the baby was born.””

“She was alive that night.””

“No.””

“I was there.””

“You're lying.””

Claire shook her head.

“She arrived at the hospital forty minutes after you gave birth.””

Sarah looked stunned.

“Why?””

Claire placed another document on the table.

“Because your father called her.””

Evelyn read the page.

A private medical invoice.

Two infant names had been blacked out.

One remained visible.

*Infant A — Evelyn Hayes.*

The other:

*Infant B — Unknown.*

Evelyn looked up.

“Why was my mother's name on this?””

Claire said quietly, “Because she ordered the switch.””

Sarah's hand flew to her mouth.

Maya stared at Evelyn.

“Your mom?””

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Her childhood memories were suddenly breaking apart.

Her mother had always been cold.

Elegant.

Demanding.

She had controlled every detail of Evelyn's life.

Who she dated.

Who she married.

Which family she belonged to.

But Evelyn had never imagined this.

“What did she want?”” Evelyn whispered.

Claire looked at Maya.

“She wanted your baby.””

“Why?””

“Because your father had promised someone an heir.””

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“Someone?””

Claire nodded.

“A man who controlled half of your father's business.””

“Who?””

Claire's silence lasted too long.

Evelyn slammed her hand against the table.

“Who?””

Claire finally said it.

“Jonathan Vale.””

Marcus's face went pale.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You know that name.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Vale was your father's largest private investor.””

“And?””

“He disappeared twenty-nine years ago.””

Claire shook her head.

“He didn't disappear.””

Sarah whispered, “Where is he?””

Claire looked at Maya.

“Closer than you think.””

Maya's eyes widened.

Evelyn pulled her closer.

“What does he want with my granddaughter?””

Claire answered immediately.

“The same thing he wanted thirty years ago.””

“What?””

“A bloodline.””

Evelyn stared.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It will.””

Claire reached into her handbag and removed a folded letter.

She handed it to Evelyn.

The paper was brittle.

The handwriting belonged to Evelyn's father.

Evelyn read.

Her face changed line by line.

“What is it?””

Sarah asked.

Evelyn couldn't speak.

Marcus took the letter.

His eyes widened.

“Good God.””

Sarah grabbed it.

The letter contained a list of names.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Politicians.

At the bottom was one final name.

*Sarah Carter.*

Sarah went completely still.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“Your mother wasn't protecting you.””

Sarah looked up.

“What?””

“She was protecting herself.””

“From whom?””

Claire looked toward the ballroom windows.

“From Evelyn's father.””

Sarah's eyes filled.

“But my mother told me to take the baby.””

“She told you to take one baby.””

Sarah froze.

“What?””

Claire's voice softened.

“She didn't tell you which one.””

Sarah's face drained of color.

“No…”

Evelyn looked between them.

“You took the wrong baby?””

Sarah backed away.

“I didn't know.””

“You were there.””

“I was twenty-three.””

“You held my child.””

“I didn't know which child was yours!””

Maya began crying.

Evelyn turned toward her.

“It's okay.””

Maya shook her head.

“No, it's not.””

She looked at Sarah.

“Am I your daughter?””

Sarah dropped to her knees.

“Yes.””

“Are you sure?””

Sarah pulled Maya into her arms.

“I have loved you every day of your life.””

“But am I hers?””

Sarah looked at Evelyn.

“I don't know.””

The words broke something inside the room.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Then Maya spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Maya slowly reached behind her ear.

She touched the crescent-shaped birthmark.

“Grandma has the same one.””

Evelyn stared.

Claire's face suddenly changed.

“That's impossible.””

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“What?””

Claire stepped closer to Maya.

Her voice trembled.

“That mark wasn't inherited.””

Sarah frowned.

“Then what is it?””

Claire looked at the old photograph.

“It was made.””

Silence.

Evelyn felt a chill move through her.

“Made?””

Claire nodded.

“Your father marked the baby.””

“Why?””

“So he could always identify her.””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

“But if the mark was made…”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Then we finally know which baby was yours.””

Maya stared at her.

“How?””

Claire reached into her handbag one last time.

She removed a tiny medical photograph.

A newborn's left ear.

A crescent-shaped mark.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

Claire placed it on the table.

Evelyn leaned closer.

Then she stopped.

The note contained one sentence.

*The first baby had the mark. The second baby was given the mark later.*

Sarah's face went white.

Evelyn looked at Maya.

Then at Claire.

“Which one is she?””

Claire's lips parted.

Before she could answer, the ballroom doors slammed shut.

A man's voice came from the other side.

“Claire.””

Everyone froze.

Claire turned toward the doors.

Her face filled with terror.

“That's him.””

Evelyn whispered, “Vale?””

Claire nodded.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Open the door.””

Maya clutched Evelyn's hand.

Claire slowly backed away from the entrance.

And through the glass, a tall man's silhouette appeared.

He was holding a photograph of two newborn babies.

Then he lifted it toward the glass.

May you like

On the back, written in red ink, were four words:

*One of them is mine.*
