Chapter 8: The Brother Buried in the Family Records
Dante read the message again.
One of them was never supposed to survive.
The words had been written in black ink, the letters pressed so deeply into the paper that the pen had nearly torn through it.
He looked at the photograph of the two newborn babies.
One was him.
The other was Adrian.
He had seen childhood photographs of Adrian before the boating accident. A serious boy with dark eyes, a crooked smile, and a habit of standing too close to Dante whenever their father entered the room.
They had not been brothers in the ordinary sense.
Adrian had been his cousin.
At least, that was what Thomas had always said.
But the birth certificates in the photograph suggested something else.
Dante lifted the phone.
"Marcus, get the original hospital records for both of us. I want the delivery dates, the attending physicians, and every name connected to the births.""
Marcus answered immediately.
"Already working on it.""
"And find Adrian.""
A pause.
"Boss, we searched for him years ago.""
"Then search again.""
"What changed?""
Dante stared at the photograph.
"Everything.""
He ended the call and turned toward Bianca.
She was standing near the window, twisting a ring around her finger.
"How much did you know?"" he asked.
"Not enough.""
"That answer is getting old.""
Bianca turned.
"I knew Thomas had a secret. I knew it involved Elena, the pendant, and a child. I didn't know about Adrian until tonight.""
"Why didn't you tell me when you found the photograph?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of me?""
"Of losing you.""
Dante gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"You helped a man who threatened my daughter because you were afraid I'd leave you?""
Bianca's eyes filled.
"I thought if I understood the situation, I could control it.""
"You don't control people by handing them over to my father.""
"I didn't know he was going to send someone to the safe house.""
"But you knew he wanted the pendant.""
She lowered her head.
"Yes.""
Dante stepped back from the desk.
"You're done here.""
Bianca looked up sharply.
"What?""
"Our engagement is over.""
For several seconds, she seemed unable to understand the words.
Then her expression hardened.
"You can't be serious.""
"I've never been more serious.""
"After everything I've done for you?""
"You helped a stranger locate a woman who had been receiving death threats. You gave my father's people access to my security system. You put a child in danger.""
"I didn't know they'd shoot at her!""
"You knew enough.""
Bianca's face crumpled.
"Dante, please. I love you.""
He looked at her for a long moment.
"Maybe you do. But you love being part of this family more than you love protecting the people in it.""
She slapped the desk with her palm.
"You're throwing away our future for a woman who lied to you for seven years!""
Dante's expression remained still.
"No. I'm ending our future because you lied to me tonight.""
He opened the door.
"Marcus will escort you out. You will not contact Elena or Sophie. You will not access my family's records, properties, or accounts. If you have anything else to tell me, you'll tell Marcus.""
Bianca stared at him.
"You'll regret this.""
"Maybe.""
He stepped aside.
"But I won't regret protecting my daughter.""
Bianca walked past him without another word.
At the end of the hallway, she stopped.
"Dante?""
He didn't turn.
"Your father told me something else.""
Dante waited.
"He said the person who knows the truth about Adrian isn't Thomas.""
He slowly looked back.
"Who is it?""
Bianca's voice dropped.
"Your mother.""
Then she left.
Dante hadn't visited his mother's grave in almost a year.
He drove there just before dawn, accompanied by Marcus and two trusted guards. The cemetery was quiet beneath a pale sky. Dew clung to the grass, and the stone angels lining the path looked almost translucent in the early light.
His mother, Evelyn Moretti, had died when Dante was twenty-four.
Cancer, according to the doctors.
A private funeral, according to his father.
A final letter Dante had never been allowed to read.
He stood before the headstone, hands in his coat pockets.
"Evelyn Moretti," he whispered.
Marcus remained several feet behind him.
Dante crouched and brushed a fallen leaf away from the stone.
"You knew, didn't you?""
The question sounded absurd in the empty cemetery.
Yet he couldn't stop asking it.
"You knew about Adrian. You knew about Elena. You knew about Sophie.""
He swallowed.
"And you let me believe I was alone.""
A cold breeze moved through the trees.
Marcus approached quietly.
"Boss, I found something in the cemetery records.""
Dante stood.
"What?""
"Your mother's burial plot was purchased under a different name. The official paperwork says Evelyn Moretti, but the original payment came from an account belonging to a woman named Claire Bennett.""
Dante frowned.
"Who is she?""
Marcus handed him a folded document.
"Your mother's younger sister.""
Dante stared at the name.
He had never known Evelyn had a sister.
"My father said her family died before I was born.""
"According to the records, Claire Bennett is alive.""
"Where?""
Marcus pointed to an address on the paper.
"A private care residence outside the city. She's been living there for six years.""
Dante took the document.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
"Her file was marked confidential. The person who paid for her care requested that no family members be contacted.""
Dante looked back at his mother's grave.
His father had not simply hidden one child.
He had erased people from the family whenever their existence became inconvenient.
"Take me to her.""
The residence was a quiet brick building surrounded by a garden. A nurse led Dante down a sunlit corridor to a small sitting room.
An elderly Black woman sat beside the window, wrapped in a blue cardigan. Her hair was silver, and a thin blanket covered her knees.
When Dante entered, she looked up.
For a moment, her eyes were clouded with confusion.
Then she saw his face.
"Oh," she whispered.
Dante stopped.
"You know me?""
The woman reached for the armrest.
"You're Evelyn's boy.""
He approached slowly.
"My name is Dante.""
"I know who you are.""
Her voice trembled.
"You're the one she tried to save.""
Dante crouched beside her chair.
"Save me from what?""
Claire Bennett looked toward the nurse.
"Please leave us alone.""
The nurse hesitated, then stepped outside and closed the door.
Claire waited until the footsteps faded.
Then she leaned closer.
"Thomas told everyone Adrian died in a boating accident.""
Dante's pulse quickened.
"Was that a lie?""
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
Claire shook her head.
"I don't know where he is now. But I know what happened that night.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Adrian and you were born on the same night. Your mother gave birth to you first. Adrian was born eleven minutes later.""
Dante felt his heart pound.
"You're saying we were twins?""
Claire nodded.
"Identical twins.""
He gripped the armrest.
"But Adrian was my cousin.""
"That was Thomas's story. He told the family that Adrian was the son of his younger brother, who had died overseas.""
"Why?""
"Because Thomas wanted an heir he could control. Your mother wanted two children who could grow up together.""
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"When the doctors discovered that one of you needed emergency treatment, Thomas made a decision. He ordered the hospital to record one child as stillborn.""
Dante couldn't speak.
Claire reached for his hand.
"Your mother never forgave him.""
"Which child?""
She closed her eyes.
"Adrian.""
The room seemed to tilt.
Dante rose abruptly, taking several steps toward the window.
His entire life had been built around a lie.
His brother had been alive.
His mother had known.
And his father had turned the truth into a weapon.
"Where did Adrian go?""
Claire wiped her eyes.
"Your mother smuggled him out of the hospital with the help of a nurse. She arranged for him to be raised under another name. Thomas discovered the truth years later.""
Dante turned.
"And the boating accident?""
"Thomas staged it. He wanted the family to believe Adrian was dead. He told your mother that if she ever revealed the truth, he would destroy both her sons.""
Dante stared at the floor.
"What happened to my mother?""
Claire hesitated.
"She became afraid of your father. She started keeping records. Letters.
Photographs. Medical documents. She hid them somewhere she believed Thomas would never search.""
"Where?""
Claire reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a small brass key.
"She gave me this shortly before she died.""
Dante took it.
"What's it for?""
"The old family chapel.""
He looked at her.
"There's a locked cabinet beneath the altar. Your mother kept everything there.""
Dante closed his fingers around the key.
Claire's voice grew urgent.
"Listen to me, Dante. Thomas doesn't want the empire anymore. He already has it. What he wants is something your mother took from him.""
"What?""
Claire looked directly into his eyes.
"The truth about who your father really is.""
Dante's phone vibrated.
A message from Elena.
*Sophie is missing. The guards say she never left the bedroom.*
For a moment, he couldn't breathe.
Then another message appeared.
A photograph of Sophie sitting in a car beside a man wearing a gray overcoat.
Beneath it were four words.
*Bring me my heir.*
Dante ran from the room.
He had spent his life believing he was the son Thomas Moretti had chosen.
Now he understood that his father had been choosing between his sons since the day they were born.
And Sophie was the final piece of a game that had started before she existed.
Elena stood in the safe house's bedroom, clutching Sophie's abandoned stuffed rabbit.
The guards had searched the property twice.
The windows were locked. The exterior doors showed no signs of forced entry. The security footage had been erased during the same blackout that had interrupted the surveillance feed.
Yet Sophie was gone.
Elena pressed the rabbit against her chest.
"No," she whispered.
"Not my baby.""
Marcus entered the room, his face pale.
"Dante is on his way.""
Elena turned on him.
"Your security team was supposed to protect her!""
"I know.""
"You promised she would be safe!""
Marcus accepted the accusation without defending himself.
"We're going to find her.""
Elena shook her head.
"You don't understand. Thomas doesn't want money. He doesn't want revenge. He wants something that belongs to his family.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What?""
Elena's eyes filled.
"He's not after the empire anymore.""
May you like
She stared at the empty bed.
"He's after the child who can prove he stole it.""
