Chapter 9: The Heir in the Chapel

Dante reached the safe house in less than twenty minutes.

Elena was waiting at the front door, still holding Sophie's stuffed rabbit. Her face was wet with tears, but her voice was steady when she spoke.

"Tell me you know where she is.""

Dante stepped out of the car.

"I have a lead.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He looked at the rabbit in her hands.

"No. I don't know exactly where she is yet.""

Elena turned away, pressing her free hand over her mouth.

Dante had faced armed men without blinking. He had walked into rooms knowing someone intended to kill him and left those rooms with everyone else surrendering.

But there was nothing he could say to a mother whose child had disappeared while under his protection.

"I'm going to bring her home," he said.

Elena faced him again.

"You'd better.""

There was no fear in her eyes now.

Only a fury so deep that it seemed to hold her upright.

"If anything happens to Sophie, I will never forgive you.""

Dante nodded.

"You shouldn't.""

He took out his phone and showed her the photograph of Sophie in the car.

Elena's breath caught.

"That's her.""

"Yes.""

"Where was it taken?""

"We're tracing the location.""

She studied the picture.

Sophie was seated beside a man wearing a gray overcoat. Her face looked frightened, but she wasn't injured. Around her neck was the silver pendant.

Elena touched the empty chain at her own throat.

"They gave it back to her.""

Dante frowned.

"What?""

"The pendant. Thomas took it from the safe house, but now Sophie has it again.""

He looked closer.

The pendant rested against Sophie's black dress.

Dante suddenly remembered the old family crest on his own ring, the hospital tag in the photograph, and the words Claire had spoken.

The truth about who your father really is.

He turned toward Marcus.

"Get me the records from the old family chapel. I want the property deed, the original architectural plans, and every document my mother left behind.""

Marcus nodded.

"Already requested.""

Dante looked back at Elena.

"There's something else you need to know.""

She waited.

"Adrian was my twin brother.""

Elena's face changed.

"What?""

"My father told everyone he died in a boating accident. He was never my cousin. He was my brother.""

Elena slowly sat on the edge of the sofa.

"Then the other child Thomas told me about...""

"Was Adrian.""

She covered her mouth.

Dante crouched in front of her.

"Claire said my mother hid records in the family chapel. I believe those records will explain why Thomas has been searching for Sophie.""

Elena looked up sharply.

"Searching for her?""

"Yes.""

"Then he knew she existed before tonight.""

Dante didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Elena stood so quickly that the rabbit slipped from her hands.

"How long?""

"We don't know.""

"How long has your father known about my daughter?""

Dante picked up the rabbit and handed it back to her.

"Long enough to arrange all of this.""

Elena stared at him.

Then she whispered, "I knew he wouldn't leave us alone.""

Dante reached for her hand.

She pulled away.

"Don't comfort me. Find my daughter.""

He stood.

"I will.""

The old Moretti family chapel stood on a hill outside the city, hidden behind iron gates and a row of ancient oak trees.

It had been built by Dante's great-grandfather, a man who believed that a family should have a place where its dead could watch over its living.

Dante had not entered the chapel since his mother's funeral.

The building smelled of dust, old wood, and candle wax. Morning light streamed through tall stained-glass windows, illuminating the marble altar.

Marcus and two guards searched the side rooms while Dante approached the altar.

He took the brass key from his pocket.

Beneath the altar was a narrow cabinet, its lock concealed behind a carved wooden panel.

The key turned with a soft click.

Inside lay a leather-bound ledger, several envelopes, and a small velvet box.

Dante opened the ledger.

His mother's handwriting filled the first page.

*If you are reading this, Thomas has finally taken the family too far.*

Dante swallowed.

He turned the page.

The entries described payments to private doctors, transfers between secret accounts, and a series of names connected to the hospital where Dante and Adrian had been born.

Then he found a letter addressed to him.

My dear Dante,

If you have found this, then I have failed to protect you from the truth.

Your father did not simply hide Adrian's birth. He used it to build the empire you now control. He told our family that only one son had survived because he believed a single heir would be easier to shape.

But Adrian survived.

I arranged for him to be raised away from Thomas, believing distance would keep him safe. I was wrong.

Dante turned another page.

A photograph slipped from the ledger.

It showed a young woman holding two newborn babies.

His mother.

Beside her stood a nurse.

On the back, Evelyn had written:

*The nurse who saved Adrian is the only person who knows what Thomas did to the original inheritance documents.*

Dante stared at the photograph.

Beneath it was a name.

*Nurse Patricia Ellis.*

Marcus approached.

"Boss, we found something in the side room.""

He held up a small metal box.

Inside were several old medical bracelets, a hospital key card, and a sealed envelope marked with a date from seven years earlier.

Dante opened it.

The first page was a copy of Sophie's birth certificate.

The second was a legal document naming her as the beneficiary of a trust established by Thomas Moretti.

Dante read the amount twice.

The trust held nearly forty million dollars.

But the money wasn't the most important part.

The document stated that the beneficiary would inherit the controlling shares of the Moretti family's legitimate businesses upon reaching adulthood, provided that her biological parentage was verified.

Dante looked up.

"Thomas built a fortune in Sophie's name.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why would he give an infant control of the family business?""

"Because he never intended her to grow up outside his control.""

Dante turned the page.

At the bottom was a clause written in smaller print.

*In the event that the beneficiary is determined to be the biological child of Dante Moretti and Elena Carter, all prior transfers to Adrian Moretti shall be void.*

Marcus read it over his shoulder.

"So this is about inheritance.""

"Partly.""

Dante stared at the signature.

His father's name appeared beneath the clause.

Thomas had built a legal structure around Sophie before she was even born.

He had known exactly who she was.

And he had been waiting for the right moment to claim her.

A noise came from the chapel entrance.

Dante turned.

An elderly woman stood in the doorway, holding a black umbrella.

She wore a dark coat and carried a leather handbag. Her silver hair was pulled back, and her face was marked by years of exhaustion.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

Dante raised a hand.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked at him.

"My name is Patricia Ellis.""

Dante felt his pulse quicken.

"The nurse?""

She nodded.

"I delivered you and Adrian.""

Dante approached her slowly.

"Where is my brother?""

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know where he is now. But I know why Thomas wants Sophie.""

"Tell me.""

She looked toward the altar.

"Because your father made a promise when the twins were born. He promised the family that the firstborn son would inherit everything.""

Dante frowned.

"Adrian was born eleven minutes after me.""

"That's what the records say.""

"Then why does Thomas want Sophie?""

Patricia opened her handbag and removed a folded document.

"Because the original birth records were changed.""

Dante took the paper.

His name appeared first.

Adrian's name appeared second.

But beside the delivery times, someone had written a correction in red ink.

*ADRIAN MORETTI — FIRSTBORN.*

Dante stared at it.

Patricia's voice trembled.

"Thomas changed the records after the birth. He wanted you to inherit the empire because he believed you would be easier to control. Your mother discovered the truth years later.""

Dante felt the room close around him.

"Why does Sophie matter?""

Patricia pointed to the final paragraph.

"Because the inheritance was never meant to pass directly to either son. Your grandfather placed a condition in the original family trust. If the firstborn's line was ever falsely erased, the inheritance would pass to that line's first surviving child.""

Dante looked up.

"Adrian's child.""

Patricia nodded.

"Sophie.""

For several seconds, Dante couldn't speak.

The little girl was not merely connected to the Moretti family.

She was the legal heir to everything his father had stolen from Adrian.

The pendant was not a sentimental keepsake.

It was proof of the family line.

And Thomas had spent years ensuring that no one could use it to challenge his control.

Dante folded the document carefully.

"Where is my daughter?""

Patricia's face crumpled.

"I don't know.""

"Who does?""

She hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag again and pulled out a second photograph.

It showed a man standing beside Sophie outside an old stone building.

The man had Dante's face.

His eyes.

His mouth.

His exact expression.

Only older. Harder. Marked by a thin scar running from his left temple to his cheek.

Dante stared at the photograph.

Marcus whispered, "Boss...""

Patricia looked directly at Dante.

"That is Adrian.""

Dante's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Hello, brother.""

Dante closed his eyes briefly.

Then he opened them.

"Where is Sophie?""

A soft laugh.

"Somewhere safe.""

"Bring her home.""

"Home?"" Adrian repeated.

"Which home, Dante? The one Father gave you? Or the one he stole from me?""

Dante gripped the phone.

"If you touch her—"

"I won't hurt the child. She's the only innocent person in this family.""

"Then let her go.""

"Not until you understand what Father did.""

Dante glanced at the document in his hand.

"I know about the inheritance.""

"Do you?""

Adrian's voice turned cold.

"Then you know that everything you own was built on a lie.""

Dante took a slow breath.

"What do you want?""

"Midnight. The old estate. You, me, and Thomas.""

"And Sophie?""

A pause.

"She'll be there.""

The line went dead.

Dante lowered the phone.

For the first time, the truth had a face.

His brother was alive.

His daughter was in his brother's custody.

And the man who had destroyed both their lives was waiting for them at the estate where it had all begun.

Dante turned toward Marcus.

"Get the cars ready.""

Then he looked at Patricia.

"You're coming with us.""

Patricia nodded, tears running down her cheeks.

Dante placed the original birth record inside his jacket.

He had spent his entire life believing the Moretti empire was his responsibility.

May you like

Now he knew it had been stolen from his brother.

And the only person who could help him return it was the little girl his father had tried to erase.
