Chapter 2: The Champion They Buried

The silence after Gabriel Moretti said my name felt heavier than any crowd I had ever stood before.

I had spent years trying to disappear.

That night, in a room full of billionaires and celebrities, my past found me in less than ten seconds.

Gabriel looked at Victoria.

Not with anger.

Not with embarrassment.

With disappointment.

And somehow, that was worse.

“Answer me,” he said.

His voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Everyone heard him.

Victoria slowly stood up, fixing her silver dress with shaking hands.

“Gabriel, you’re misunderstanding what happened.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because I had heard those words before.

People always said the same thing when the truth finally caught them.

Misunderstanding.

Confusion.

A mistake.

Anything except responsibility.

Gabriel’s eyes moved to the cake on the floor.

“Did he destroy it?””

Victoria hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Gabriel noticed.

Everyone noticed.

“He was careless,” she said quickly.

“He came into a private event and caused a scene.””

I looked at her.

The woman who had pushed me.

The woman who had slapped me.

The woman who had insulted my mother.

And now she was rewriting the story.

A familiar feeling returned.

Not rage.

Something colder.

The same feeling I had when I watched my career disappear because people with money and influence decided my truth didn’t matter.

Gabriel turned to me.

“Is that what happened?””

I stayed quiet.

My mother touched my arm.

“Elias…”

She knew.

She knew that look in my eyes.

She had seen it years ago.

Before everything collapsed.

I looked at Gabriel.

“She wanted me to apologize for something she did.””

Victoria immediately interrupted.

“That’s ridiculous.””

I continued.

“She humiliated me in front of your guests. Then she insulted my mother.””

The room became uncomfortable.

People who had laughed moments earlier suddenly found the floor interesting.

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“What did you say about his mother?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That answer was enough.

Gabriel stepped closer to her.

“Victoria.””

Her face changed.

She wasn’t afraid of me.

She wasn’t afraid of the guests.

But she was afraid of disappointing him.

“I didn’t mean anything by it,” she whispered.

My mother looked away.

That hurt.

Because some wounds weren’t fixed by apologies.

Some words stayed.

Gabriel noticed.

He turned toward my mother.

“Mrs. Ward, I apologize.””

My mother looked surprised.

“You don’t have to apologize to me.””

“Yes,” Gabriel said.

“I do.””

That was the first thing he did that night that made me understand why people respected him.

Not because of his money.

Not because of his reputation.

Because he knew when someone had been wronged.

Victoria stared at him.

“You’re apologizing to them?””

Gabriel looked back at her.

“They were guests in my home.””

Her expression tightened.

“They were employees.””

“No.””

His answer came instantly.

“They were people.””

The room went silent again.

I didn’t know what to make of him.

Men like Gabriel Moretti were not supposed to care about fairness.

Not according to the rumors.

Not according to the stories.

But there he stood.

Defending the same delivery driver everyone had ignored.

Then he looked at my scar again.

“How did you end up delivering packages?””

The question caught me off guard.

I looked away.

“It’s a long story.””

“I have time.””

I almost smiled.

Of course he did.

People like him always had time.

People like me always ran out of it.

“I’m not interested in talking about my past.””

Gabriel studied me.

“You think I don’t know what happened?””

My body went still.

The ballroom disappeared for a moment.

The music.

The guests.

The lights.

Everything.

“What did you say?””

Gabriel lowered his voice.

“I know about the fight.””

My fingers tightened.

My mother noticed.

She always noticed.

“Elias,” she whispered.

I ignored her.

“What do you know?””

Gabriel looked around.

Too many people were listening.

“Not here.””

I laughed quietly.

“Why? Afraid your guests will hear something embarrassing?””

His expression didn’t change.

“No.””

He looked at Victoria.

“I’m afraid some of them already know.””

That sentence changed everything.

Victoria looked away.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Because I spent years studying people before they attacked.

Gabriel saw it too.

“You knew?”” he asked her.

Victoria froze.

“Gabriel…”

“You knew who he was?””

The guests started whispering.

I looked between them.

Something was happening.

Something bigger than cake.

Bigger than a rich woman humiliating a delivery driver.

Victoria shook her head.

“No. I didn’t.””

But her voice wasn’t convincing.

Gabriel walked toward a nearby table and picked up a champagne glass.

Not to drink.

Just holding it.

Thinking.

“I spent three years investigating what happened to Elias Ward.””

The room became completely still.

“He was one of the greatest fighters of his generation.””

I looked down.

I hated hearing that.

Because it sounded like someone was describing a dead person.

Gabriel continued.

“Eleven years ago, he was accused of taking money to lose a championship fight.””

A few guests looked shocked.

I heard whispers.

“I remember that…”

“He was famous…”

“What happened?””

I wanted to leave.

I wanted to walk out with my mother.

But my feet wouldn’t move.

Because Gabriel kept talking.

“The evidence was fake.””

My head lifted.

He looked directly at me.

“The person who framed you wanted your career gone.””

My throat tightened.

“You know that?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“Because the same people who destroyed you tried to destroy me.””

That was not the answer I expected.

Before I could ask more, a man near the bar spoke.

“Gabriel, are you saying the scandal was connected to you?””

Everyone turned.

The man looked nervous immediately.

Gabriel didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

His silence said enough.

I stared at him.

“What are you not telling me?””

Gabriel walked closer.

“Eleven years ago, someone used your name to cover up a criminal operation.””

My heartbeat changed.

The old memories came back.

The locker room.

The envelope.

The accusation.

The reporters outside my house.

The fans who turned against me overnight.

The people who stopped answering my calls.

And the one person who told me to run.

I had spent eleven years believing I lost everything because someone wanted money.

But maybe there was more.

“Who?”” I asked.

Gabriel looked at Victoria.

Not at me.

At Victoria.

My stomach dropped.

She noticed.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Gabriel’s face became unreadable.

“Am I?””

Victoria stepped closer.

“You’re believing him?””

Gabriel didn’t respond.

“You’re trusting a man who attacked me?””

That was the moment I understood.

She wasn’t afraid because I embarrassed her.

She was afraid because Gabriel was looking too closely.

I stepped toward the door.

“I’m leaving.””

Gabriel turned.

“Elias.””

I stopped.

“I know you don’t trust me.””

I looked at him.

“You’re right.””

His expression remained calm.

“But there’s something you need to see.””

“I’m not interested.””

“You will be.””

I shook my head.

“I spent eleven years trying to forget this.””

Gabriel’s voice lowered.

“And someone spent eleven years making sure you never found the truth.””

My hand reached the door handle.

Then Gabriel said one sentence that made me stop.

“The man who ruined your career is here tonight.””

The room disappeared.

I slowly turned around.

“What?””

Gabriel looked toward the crowd.

A man near the back of the ballroom immediately looked away.

That reaction told me everything.

I knew that face.

Not from television.

Not from photographs.

From the worst night of my life.

The man who had handed reporters the evidence against me.

The man who smiled while my career burned.

My fists clenched.

Gabriel whispered:

“Elias… meet Daniel Cross.””

The name hit me harder than any punch I had ever taken.

And then Daniel smiled.

May you like

Because he knew exactly who I was.

And he had been waiting for me to come back.
