Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Photograph
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
The room around me disappeared.
The voices outside.
The music from the ballroom.
The footsteps of guests wondering what was happening.
Everything faded.
There was only that picture.
Me.
Eleven years younger.
Standing backstage before the championship fight that changed my life forever.
I remembered that night perfectly.
The smell of sweat and metal.
The sound of thousands of people screaming my name.
The weight of the championship belt around my shoulder.
I remembered believing I had finally made it.
After years of training.
After years of sacrifice.
After years of my mother working double shifts so I could chase a dream.
I had finally reached the top.
But the photograph showed something I never knew.
Someone had been standing behind me.
Someone who had been there before everything collapsed.
Someone I trusted.
I looked at the writing again.
*You trusted the wrong brother.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“What does this mean?””
Gabriel stood silently beside me.
For the first time since I met him, he didn’t look like the powerful billionaire everyone feared.
He looked like someone remembering something painful.
“Elias…”
“No.””
My voice came out sharper than I expected.
“You brought me here. You told me you knew the truth. So tell me.””
Gabriel looked at the photograph.
“The man behind you.””
I leaned closer.
“Who is he?””
Gabriel didn’t answer.
That was an answer by itself.
“Gabriel.””
He exhaled slowly.
“His name is Adrian Moretti.””
The name meant nothing.
Until it did.
Moretti.
My eyes moved to him.
“Your brother?””
Gabriel nodded once.
“My older brother.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
I looked back at the photograph.
A younger Adrian Moretti stood behind me, holding a folder.
Watching.
Waiting.
“How did your brother know me?””
Gabriel walked toward the desk.
“Because before he became my enemy, Adrian was involved with the sports world.””
I said nothing.
He continued.
“He invested in fighting promotions. He found talented athletes, signed them, controlled their contracts.””
My stomach tightened.
“My promotion company.””
“Yes.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Daniel Cross.
The fake evidence.
The scandal.
The money.
The people behind the scenes.
“You knew this for eleven years?””
Gabriel looked at me.
“I suspected.””
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“You suspected?””
“I didn’t have enough proof.””
“You had my entire life destroyed and you didn’t have enough proof?””
His expression changed.
“I know what happened to you was wrong.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“It isn’t.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then the door opened.
My mother stood there.
Her eyes moved between us.
“Elias.””
I folded the photograph.
She saw my face.
And immediately knew something had happened.
“What is it?””
I wanted to lie.
I wanted to tell her everything was fine.
That was what I always did.
But after eleven years, I was tired of pretending.
“Mom…”
My voice cracked slightly.
“The man who ruined my career wasn’t working alone.””
She stepped closer.
“What do you mean?””
I looked at Gabriel.
Then back at her.
“There were people behind it.””
My mother covered her mouth.
For years, she had watched me blame myself.
She had watched me believe I wasn’t good enough.
That maybe I had been foolish.
That maybe I deserved what happened.
Now she was learning the truth.
Someone had stolen my life.
Gabriel looked at her.
“Mrs. Ward, I’m sorry.””
She looked at him.
“Sorry?””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Do you know how many nights my son woke up thinking everyone hated him?””
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
“How many times he said he should have seen it coming?””
She stepped closer.
“Do you know what it’s like watching your child lose the one thing that made him happy?””
The billionaire had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
My mother looked at me.
“You always told me you were okay.””
I looked away.
“I didn’t want you to worry.””
She touched my face.
“You were my son. I was already worried.””
For a second, I wasn’t a former champion.
I wasn’t a delivery driver.
I was just her son.
The boy who used to run home after training with scraped hands.
The boy who promised her he would make something of himself.
A knock interrupted us.
A security guard entered.
“Mr. Moretti.””
Gabriel turned.
“Yes?””
“We found something else.””
The guard held out a small device.
A flash drive.
“Hidden behind the desk.””
Gabriel took it.
My eyes narrowed.
“Someone wanted us to find that.””
“Yes,” Gabriel said.
“Why?””
He looked at the drive.
“Because whoever left it wanted to reveal something.””
“Or trap us.””
His eyes met mine.
“That’s possible.””
I almost smiled.
At least he admitted it.
Gabriel connected the drive to the computer on the desk.
A single video file appeared.
No name.
No date.
Just one word.
*CONFESSION.*
Nobody moved.
Gabriel clicked.
The screen flickered.
Then a face appeared.
Daniel Cross.
Younger.
Eleven years younger.
Sitting in a dark room.
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked nervous.
Not confident.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened to me.””
The room went silent.
The recording continued.
“I don’t have much time.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I made mistakes.””
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“But the truth is, I wasn’t the person who planned it.””
I stepped closer to the screen.
Daniel continued.
“The fight-fixing scandal involving Elias Ward was created by Adrian Moretti.””
My breathing stopped.
My mother grabbed my arm.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Adrian wanted control of the promotion company. He needed investors to believe the company was unstable so he could buy it cheaply.””
The video shook.
Like Daniel was holding the camera himself.
“He used Elias because everyone trusted him. Elias was the perfect target.””
My hands became fists.
Daniel continued.
“I helped him.””
That sentence hurt.
Even though I already knew.
“I provided documents. I changed records. I made sure the story reached the media.””
He looked down.
“I thought I would get paid and walk away.””
A pause.
“I was wrong.””
The screen froze for a moment.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Adrian doesn’t let people walk away.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Gabriel quietly said:
“Adrian is alive.””
I turned.
“What?””
Gabriel stared at the blank screen.
“Everyone thought he disappeared years ago.””
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then why was he looking for me?””
Gabriel didn’t answer.
Because none of us knew.
A sound came from outside.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked around.
It was coming from the hallway.
A security guard picked up a phone sitting on a small table.
“Mr. Moretti?””
He listened.
Then his face changed.
“Someone wants to speak with Elias.””
My blood ran cold.
The guard slowly handed me the phone.
I didn’t move.
Gabriel looked at me.
“Elias.””
I took it.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
Older.
Calmer.
But impossible to forget.
“Hello, champion.””
My grip tightened.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it years ago.
Before the betrayal.
Before the lies.
Before everything fell apart.
Adrian Moretti.
“I see you finally found the truth.””
I didn’t speak.
He laughed softly.
“You always were stubborn.””
My heart pounded.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then his answer came.
“Because, Elias…”
The voice lowered.
“The night you lost your championship wasn’t the night I destroyed your life.””
Another pause.
“It was the night I saved it.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
The line went silent.
Then Adrian said one final sentence.
“The person you think betrayed you is not the person you should fear.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
May you like
And for the first time in eleven years…
I wondered if the story I had spent my life believing was a lie.
