Chapter 6: The Man Behind Northbridge Capital
I read the name on the document three times.
Thomas Reed.
Northbridge Capital.
The company that had been receiving money from my business.
The company Daniel had been trying to transfer my shares into.
The company my wife and her mother had apparently been connected to for years.
"You're telling me the man who originally owned my father's business is still alive?""
Robert nodded.
"He's been alive all this time.""
"Then why did my father tell me he'd disappeared?""
"Because Thomas wanted everyone to believe he was gone.""
I pulled out a chair.
"Start from the beginning.""
Robert removed his glasses and placed them on the table.
"Your father and Thomas started the company together. They were friends long before they became business partners. Thomas provided the original capital. Your father managed operations.""
"So why did they split?""
"Money.""
Robert paused.
"Thomas believed your father was hiding profits. Your father believed Thomas was using company funds to finance private investments.""
"Who was right?""
Robert looked at me.
"Both of them had something to hide.""
My mother slowly sat down.
Robert continued.
"Years later, your father bought out Thomas's shares. But the transaction was disputed. Thomas claimed the documents were fraudulent. Your father insisted the sale was legitimate.""
I looked at the folder.
"And Elaine?""
"She was Thomas's daughter. She had access to both men's financial records. When she became involved with your father, she learned about the dispute.""
I leaned forward.
"Did she have Daniel to get money from my father?""
Robert shook his head.
"I can't say that. I know your father loved Daniel. But I also know Elaine never stopped asking for money.""
I glanced at my mother.
She stared at the table.
"How much money?"" I asked.
Robert opened another file.
"Over the years? More than two million dollars.""
My jaw tightened.
"Two million?""
"Payments disguised as consulting fees, property purchases, and investment distributions.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Do you have proof?""
Robert placed several bank statements on the table.
"These are copies of the original records. Your father gave them to me shortly before he died.""
I examined the dates.
Some payments had been made before Daniel was born.
Others continued for years afterward.
Then I saw something unexpected.
A payment dated six months after my father's death.
The recipient was Elaine Carter.
The amount was $400,000.
I looked up.
"Who authorized this?""
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Then he pointed to the signature.
Daniel Bennett.
I stared at it.
"Daniel was fourteen.""
"Exactly.""
Richard examined the document.
"That signature cannot be his.""
Robert nodded.
"It was submitted under a guardianship arrangement.""
I looked toward my mother.
"Who was Daniel's legal guardian?""
She whispered, "Your father named me.""
I turned to Robert.
"Then who signed?""
He looked directly at my mother.
"Margaret.""
The room became completely silent.
I looked at her.
"Mom?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know what it was.""
Robert's voice remained calm.
"You signed a document authorizing a transfer to Elaine.""
My mother began crying.
"She told me it was money your father had promised Daniel. She said I was keeping him from his inheritance.""
I rubbed my forehead.
Another piece of the puzzle.
Another lie.
"How much did she receive after that?""
Robert checked his notes.
"Approximately $1.2 million over the next decade.""
I stared at him.
"And you let this happen?""
Robert's face hardened.
"I tried to stop it. But your mother was Daniel's guardian, and Elaine had documents claiming she was entitled to the money.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Your father specifically instructed me not to involve you until you were forty-five.""
I frowned.
"Why forty-five?""
"Because that was when the trust would become fully yours.""
I looked down at the agreement.
My father had built a legal structure designed to protect me from exactly this situation.
But someone had spent years finding ways around it.
Robert reached into his folder again.
This time, he removed a small envelope.
"There's one more thing.""
He handed it to me.
My name was written across the front.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father's.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Marcus,
If Robert has given you this letter, then the past has finally caught up with the present.
I need you to understand something about Daniel.
He is my son. I will never deny that. But I have reasons to believe Elaine is raising him to believe that everything you have is rightfully his.
I have made mistakes. I have hurt your mother. I have failed to protect you from the consequences of my decisions.
But I will not allow either of my sons to become a weapon against the other.
I stopped reading.
My eyes blurred.
I continued.
There is a final condition attached to the family trust. If either son attempts to obtain control through fraud, coercion, or unauthorized transfer, the trustees must suspend that person's inheritance pending investigation.
I looked up.
"Daniel could lose his inheritance?""
Robert nodded.
"If the trust is valid and the evidence supports the allegations.""
I continued reading.
The final paragraph was shorter.
And Marcus, if you discover that Elaine has returned, do not trust the people who come asking you to forgive her.
I lowered the letter.
Robert watched me carefully.
"Your father believed she would eventually come back.""
I thought about Vanessa.
The woman I'd married.
The woman who'd known Daniel's parentage before our wedding.
The woman who'd helped him forge my signature.
"Robert, why did Vanessa marry me?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"I don't know.""
"She knew who Daniel was. She knew about the company. She knew about the trust.""
Robert nodded slowly.
"Then you should ask her.""
I picked up my phone.
Three missed calls from Vanessa.
Two from Daniel's attorney.
One from an unfamiliar number.
I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
"Marcus?""
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"Come to my mother's house.""
She hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because I want to hear the truth.""
"Marcus, I already told you everything.""
"No, you told me enough to make me stop asking questions.""
Silence.
Then she said, "I'm not coming.""
I looked at Richard.
"Why not?""
Her voice dropped.
"Because your mother is there.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa began crying.
"Marcus, please don't do this.""
"Do what?""
"Make me choose between you and my mother.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The answer I'd been looking for.
I wasn't simply caught in an affair.
I was standing in the middle of a family conspiracy that had started before I was born.
And my wife was still protecting the people who had built it.
"Vanessa," I said quietly, "did your mother tell you to marry me?""
She didn't answer.
"Did she?""
Finally, she whispered:
"Yes.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
"Because she needed someone inside the family.""
I felt my heart sink.
"Someone inside the family to do what?""
Vanessa broke down.
"To find the original trust documents.""
I looked at Robert.
His expression changed.
"Did you find them?"" I asked.
Vanessa whispered something.
I couldn't make out the words.
"Say it again.""
"We found them.""
My blood ran cold.
"When?""
"Three months ago.""
"Where are they?""
She started sobbing.
"Marcus, I don't know where they are now.""
I stood up.
"Who took them?""
She was silent.
Then a man's voice sounded in the background.
"Hang up, Vanessa.""
I recognized it immediately.
Daniel.
But he wasn't supposed to be home.
I heard Vanessa whisper, "No, wait.""
Then Daniel spoke directly into the phone.
"Marcus, there's something you need to understand.""
"What?""
"You're looking at the wrong person.""
I tightened my grip.
"What does that mean?""
He gave a bitter laugh.
"Do you really think Mom would let me do all this without knowing?""
I looked at my mother.
She was watching me.
Daniel continued.
"Ask your mother who visited her the night Dad died.""
My mother suddenly stood.
"Marcus, don't listen to him!""
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Ask her who took the blue folder.""
Then the call ended.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Richard looked at my mother.
Robert closed his folder.
And for the first time that day, my mother looked more frightened than anyone else in the room.
Because the secret Daniel had just revealed wasn't about his birth.
May you like
It was about what my mother had done after my father died.
And she was finally running out of ways to hide it.
