The Man in My Wife’s Arms / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Driver's Last Confession

Samuel had worked for my family for twenty-six years.

He drove my father to business meetings, took my mother shopping, and picked Daniel and me up from school.

When I was a child, he was the man who waited outside football practice in the rain.

When my father died, Samuel was the one who drove us to the funeral.

I remembered him standing beside my mother as she cried.

I remembered him telling me that I had to be strong.

And now his voice was on a recording made the night my father died.

"Find his family," I told Richard.

Richard nodded.

"I'll make some calls.""

Vanessa remained near the window.

She hadn't spoken since the recording ended.

I turned toward her.

"Why did your mother keep this?""

"I don't know.""

"Stop saying that.""

She flinched.

"Marcus, I swear I don't know everything she did.""

"But you knew enough to marry me.""

She looked down.

I walked toward her.

"Did you know Samuel was with my father that night?""

"No.""

"Did you know my father made a recording?""

"No.""

"Did you know your mother had a copy of it?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, "I found it in her house last year.""

I stared at her.

"You found it last year?""

She nodded.

"And you didn't tell me?""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's what this has always been about, isn't it?""

She started crying.

I turned away.

I didn't want to hear another explanation.

Richard's phone rang.

He listened for a moment, then looked at me.

"I found Samuel's daughter.""

"Where?""

"She lives about forty minutes away. Her name is Claire.""

"Can we see her?""

Richard hesitated.

"She agreed to meet us tomorrow morning.""

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

We need to talk. Alone.

I ignored it.

Another message arrived.

Mom is planning something. You need to hear me out.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Does your mother know Daniel is contacting me?""

She shook her head.

I replied with one word.

Tomorrow.

His response came immediately.

Not tomorrow. Tonight. Before she finds out.

At 10:30 p.m., I drove to the address Daniel sent me.

It was a small apartment building near the old industrial district.

He was waiting outside.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, and there was a fresh bruise near his left cheekbone.

"What happened to your face?"" I asked.

He gave a bitter smile.

"Your new friends aren't the only ones asking questions.""

I didn't move.

"Why did you want to see me?""

He glanced toward the street.

"Come inside.""

"No.""

"Marcus, please.""

I crossed my arms.

"Talk.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Elaine is going to disappear.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She's moving money out of the country. She's been preparing for months.""

"How do you know?""

"Because I helped her.""

I stared at him.

For once, he didn't look away.

"How much?""

"More than I can explain.""

"Try.""

He rubbed his face.

"Northbridge Capital isn't just a company. It's a holding structure. Mom used it to move money between accounts.""

"Your mother?""

He nodded.

"Elaine. She controlled the accounts. Vanessa helped with the paperwork. I handled the company transfers.""

I felt sick.

"And the money from my company?""

"Some went to Elaine. Some went to lawyers. Some went into property.""

"How much did you steal?""

Daniel swallowed.

"About two million.""

I stared at him.

"Two million dollars?""

He nodded.

I stepped closer.

"Why?""

He laughed without humor.

"Because I was tired of being the second son.""

I shook my head.

"You had a home. You had a career. I gave you everything.""

"No, Marcus. You gave me a job. You gave me money. You gave me a place at your table.""

His voice cracked.

"But every time someone mentioned Dad, they talked about you.""

I stared at him.

"You were fourteen when he died. I was eighteen. I was trying to keep the family together.""

"I know.""

"Then why did you do this?""

Daniel looked away.

"Because Elaine kept telling me that Dad had promised me half the business. She said you were sitting on something that belonged to me.""

"And you believed her?""

"I wanted to.""

That answer was painfully honest.

He reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.

"Here.""

I didn't take it immediately.

"What is it?""

"The original ownership agreement.""

My heart started pounding.

"Where did you get it?""

"From Elaine's safe.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was an old document bearing my father's signature and Thomas Reed's signature.

Richard had been searching for this exact document.

But something else was attached.

A handwritten note.

If Daniel ever discovers the truth, he must know that he was never intended to inherit the company.

I looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Daniel's face hardened.

"It means Dad lied to both of us.""

I studied the document.

The agreement didn't give Daniel half the company.

It gave him a separate financial trust.

A substantial one.

Enough to make him wealthy.

But the controlling shares were assigned to me.

I looked at my brother.

"You knew about this?""

He nodded.

"Elaine found out years ago. She told me Dad had promised me more.""

"Why didn't you read the agreement?""

"Because she told me the original had been altered.""

I lowered the paper.

"Daniel, you stole two million dollars because you wanted more than the inheritance Dad left you?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

For a moment, I saw the boy I'd once protected.

The boy who used to follow me around the house.

The boy who cried when our father died.

Then I remembered him standing beside my wife.

I remembered the forged signature.

The eight months of lies.

And the two million dollars.

"Why did you sleep with Vanessa?""

He looked down.

"Because I loved her.""

I stared at him.

"Did she love you?""

He didn't answer.

I laughed quietly.

"Of course.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Marcus, listen. The affair wasn't part of Elaine's plan. It happened because we were both unhappy.""

"Don't insult me by pretending you were unhappy together because of me.""

He swallowed.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"Elaine didn't just want the company.""

"What else?""

"She wanted the original trust destroyed.""

"Why?""

Daniel glanced toward the building entrance.

"Because the trust names another beneficiary.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

He looked directly at me.

"Thomas Reed.""

I stared at him.

"Thomas already has his own company.""

"Not anymore.""

Daniel pulled out another document.

"Thomas transferred his remaining interests into the family trust before Dad died. But the transfer only becomes effective if the original agreement is registered.""

I looked at the document.

It was a declaration of beneficial ownership.

The final line contained a name I recognized.

Robert Hayes.

"Robert?""

Daniel nodded.

"He was the trustee.""

My mind raced.

"Then why is Thomas suing us?""

"Because Elaine forged a document claiming Thomas sold his remaining interest.""

I looked at him.

"And who filed it?""

Daniel lowered his head.

"Me.""

I closed my eyes.

There was another layer to the fraud.

Another document.

Another lie.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

He reached into his pocket and removed his phone.

"I recorded a conversation with Elaine yesterday.""

He pressed play.

Her voice filled the quiet street.

"Once Marcus signs the settlement, everything is finished.""

A man's voice answered.

"What if he refuses?""

Elaine laughed.

"Then we make sure he has no choice.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

The man's voice was unfamiliar.

"Are you certain the evidence is enough?""

Elaine replied:

"Marcus will be too busy defending himself to notice what we're doing to his mother.""

The recording ended.

I stared at Daniel.

"What is she planning?""

He looked terrified.

"She's trying to have Mom declared mentally incapable of managing her finances.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Why?""

"Because if she gets control of Mom's property, she can use it as collateral for the remaining loans.""

I grabbed his jacket.

"Who is helping her?""

Daniel swallowed.

"An attorney named Philip Grant.""

I released him.

"Do you have proof?""

He nodded.

"Emails. Payments. Everything.""

I took his phone and forwarded the recording to Richard.

Then another message arrived.

This time, from my mother.

Marcus, please call me. Elaine is here.

I immediately dialed her number.

She answered on the first ring.

"Marcus?""

"Mom, where are you?""

"I'm at home.""

"Is Elaine with you?""

My mother began crying.

"Yes.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was already shaking his head.

Then my mother whispered:

"She brought someone with her. A lawyer. They say I have to sign something.""

I started running toward my car.

"Don't sign anything. I'm coming.""

But before I could end the call, I heard Elaine's voice in the background.

"Margaret, put the phone down.""

My mother whispered:

"Marcus, she says she has proof you were responsible for your father's death.""

I stopped.

The street seemed to disappear around me.

"What?""

Then Elaine took the phone.

Her voice was calm.

Almost cheerful.

"Come home, Marcus.""

A pause.

"There's something your father left behind that you really should see.""

May you like

And then she added:

"Something that proves you were the last person he wanted to inherit anything.""
