The Man Who Let Them Push / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Daughter My Father Hid

The address Claire gave me belonged to an old brick building on the east side of the city.

Nothing about it looked important.

No security.

No expensive cars.

No signs that someone inside knew secrets capable of tearing apart one of the most powerful families in the country.

That was usually how the biggest truths hid.

Quietly.

I sat in my car outside for several minutes before getting out.

Marcus watched the building through the windshield.

“You sure about this?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

I smiled slightly.

“That’s the honest answer.””

Marcus nodded.

He understood.

Confidence was easy when you had all the information.

The hardest decisions were the ones made in the dark.

We entered the building and walked up two flights of stairs. Claire’s apartment was at the end of the hallway.

I knocked.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

And I saw my father.

Not literally.

But enough to make me stop.

Claire had his eyes.

The same sharp look.

The same way of studying a person before speaking.

She was probably in her early forties, with short dark hair and a calm expression that hid years of disappointment.

“Nathan Whitmore,” she said.

I nodded.

“Claire.””

She looked past me.

“Marcus Reed.””

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“You know me?””

“My father kept records.””

That sentence bothered me.

A lot.

I stepped inside.

The apartment was simple.

Books lined the walls.

Old photographs covered a small table.

And sitting in the center was a framed picture of my father.

Younger.

Smiling.

With a woman I had never seen.

My chest tightened.

“My mother,” Claire said.

I looked at the photograph.

“My father loved her?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

“He cared about her.””

That was not the same thing.

I knew that.

She knew that.

“Why did he hide you?””

Claire walked toward the kitchen.

“Because your father was a man who spent his entire life protecting his image.””

I followed.

“He built a company. A reputation. A family.””

She poured water into two glasses.

“But he also built secrets.””

I took the glass but didn’t drink.

“What did he leave behind?””

Claire opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.

It looked old.

Worn.

Like it had been handled many times.

“He left this for me.””

I stared at it.

“And you waited until now?””

“I wasn’t sure when now would come.””

That answer irritated me.

“People keep saying that. They always wait until the damage is done.””

Claire looked at me.

“I tried to tell you.””

“When?””

“After your accident.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“I reached out.””

My mind raced.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I would have known.””

“Would you?””

The question landed hard.

Because suddenly, I remembered.

The unanswered calls.

The strange messages.

The letters my assistant filtered because they seemed suspicious.

At the time, I thought it was random.

I thought someone was trying to get money from me.

Maybe someone had been trying to warn me.

Claire watched my reaction.

“Your father created a trust before he died.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were documents.

Legal papers.

Ownership records.

A letter.

My hands tightened around the pages.

“What is this?””

Claire sat down.

“Your father knew there would eventually be a fight over the company.””

I read through the documents.

The trust was designed to protect controlling ownership of Whitmore Holdings.

But there was something else.

A clause.

A condition.

If the family leadership became compromised, control would temporarily transfer to an independent board.

I looked up.

“Compromised?””

Claire nodded.

“He was afraid someone inside the family would destroy what he built.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Claire looked at me.

“I think you already know.””

The answer came before she said it.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Eric.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“Why would Vanessa know about this?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“She didn’t.””

“Then who told her?””

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

Someone else had access.

Someone who understood my father’s plan.

Someone who knew the trust existed.

Marcus stepped closer.

“We need the original documents.””

Claire nodded.

“That’s why I called you.””

“You called me?””

“Yes.””

I looked confused.

“I didn’t contact you.””

She looked toward the window.

“I know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who sent the message?””

Claire’s face became serious.

“That’s what you need to find out.””

Before I could respond, a loud crash came from outside.

Marcus immediately moved toward the window.

“Down.””

The command was automatic.

I lowered myself as Marcus looked outside.

A vehicle sped away from the street.

Black.

No license plate visible.

My heart started racing.

“They know we’re here,” Marcus said.

Claire grabbed the envelope.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She stared at the documents.

“They’re not after you.””

She looked at me.

“They’re after this.””

The truth settled over me.

The cliff wasn’t the end.

It was a distraction.

While everyone focused on Vanessa and Eric, someone else was hunting the evidence.

Someone who knew exactly what my father had hidden.

Someone who had been waiting years for the right moment.

I looked at Claire.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

And then she said the words that changed the entire story.

“Your father wasn’t protecting the company from outsiders.””

May you like

She looked at the trust documents.

“He was protecting it from your family.””
