The Man Who Let Them Push / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Last Betrayal

We left Claire’s apartment ten minutes later.

Not because we had answers.

Because we had too many questions.

Marcus drove while I sat in silence, staring at the documents in my lap.

My father’s handwriting.

His signature.

His final warnings.

I had spent my entire life believing I understood the man who raised me.

Now I was learning he had spent his entire life hiding things from me.

“You okay?”” Marcus asked.

I looked out the window.

“No.””

He nodded.

At least he never expected a different answer.

We drove directly to a private location Marcus used for security meetings.

No company employees.

No family.

No one who could leak information.

Once inside, we spread everything across the table.

The trust documents.

The financial records.

The messages.

The photograph.

Every piece of the puzzle.

And slowly, the picture became clearer.

Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.

Eric wasn’t the beginning.

Daniel wasn’t the beginning.

They were all connected by something older.

My father’s legacy.

“This doesn’t make sense,” I said.

Marcus looked up.

“What part?””

“My father trusted Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“He trusted me.””

“Yes.””

“So why would he create something that could destroy us?””

Marcus leaned back.

“Maybe he didn’t create it to destroy you.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe he created it to expose people.””

I thought about that.

My father had always been complicated.

He loved his family.

But he was also a businessman.

He understood risk.

He understood that love didn’t always prevent betrayal.

Sometimes it only made betrayal more dangerous.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A familiar voice responded.

“Nathan.””

I froze.

“Daniel.””

Marcus immediately looked at me.

“What does he want?””

I put the call on speaker.

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.””

“You already did.””

“No. I didn’t.””

I said nothing.

Daniel took a breath.

“Someone threatened me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Try again.””

A pause.

“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Keep talking.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“After the cliff, I found out she had another partner.””

“Who?””

“I never met them.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

I believed something in his voice.

Not everything.

But something.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What did they want?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The trust.””

The room went silent.

“You knew about the trust?””

“Yes.””

My hands tightened.

“How?””

“Vanessa showed me.””

“Why?””

“She needed my help finding it.””

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal kept getting deeper.

Every answer created three more questions.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“Did you know she planned to kill me?””

His silence was longer this time.

And that was all I needed.

“You suspected.””

“I didn’t think she would actually do it.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was wrong.””

The honesty hurt.

Because it came too late.

“You let me walk into that trap.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice sharpened.

“You don’t know what it feels like to look at someone you love and realize they were waiting for you to disappear.””

Daniel started crying quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

The apology didn’t fix anything.

But maybe it was the first real thing he had given me.

“Who else knows about the trust?”” I asked.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your lawyer.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?””

“Vanessa mentioned him.””

My mind immediately went to Harold Bennett.

My father’s old attorney.

The man who handled my inheritance.

The man who had advised me for years.

The man who always seemed to know more than he said.

I ended the call.

Marcus was already reaching for his phone.

“I’ll check.””

I nodded.

Minutes later, he looked up.

His expression told me everything.

“What?””

Marcus turned the screen toward me.

A recent transaction.

A payment.

A hidden account.

The recipient name appeared.

Harold Bennett.

My lawyer.

My father’s lawyer.

The man who had been inside my family’s secrets longer than anyone alive.

I stood there, feeling the weight of every betrayal at once.

Vanessa.

Eric.

Daniel.

Harold.

How many people had been lying to me?

How many conversations had happened behind closed doors?

Marcus looked at me.

“What do we do?””

I stared at the documents.

At my father’s warning.

At the names of everyone who had betrayed me.

Then I folded the papers carefully.

“We stop chasing them.””

Marcus waited.

“We make them come to us.””

Because for the first time since this nightmare began, I understood something.

They weren’t trying to take my company.

They were trying to erase my family’s history.

And I was the last person standing between them and everything they wanted.

But they forgot one thing.

I survived the cliff.

I survived the betrayal.

And now I knew exactly who was standing on the other side.
