Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
Rain slid down Calvin Reed’s face as he stood beside the black SUV, older than the man in the photograph but unmistakably the same person.
Kiara stared at him.
Her graduation cap had begun to sag from the rain.
“You're Calvin?””
He nodded.
“Calvin Reed.””
Darnell stepped forward.
“You're supposed to be dead.””
Calvin looked at him.
“That was the idea.””
Rochelle covered her mouth.
Kiara turned toward her mother.
“You knew.””
Rochelle couldn't speak.
“You knew he was alive?””
Calvin answered for her.
“She knew.””
Kiara looked back at him.
“Then why did everyone tell me you were dead?””
Calvin's expression hardened.
“Because somebody wanted you to believe I was gone.””
Darnell's fists tightened.
“You disappeared.””
“You told everyone I died.””
“I didn't.””
Calvin laughed bitterly.
“You stood at the hospital and told Rochelle I was never coming back.””
Darnell shook his head.
“I never said that.””
Calvin took another step.
“You did.””
Andre moved between them.
“Calvin, stop.””
Calvin looked at him.
“You're the last person who should tell me what to do.””
Andre's face went pale.
Kiara noticed.
“You two know each other.””
Calvin looked at Kiara.
“Unfortunately.””
Andre swallowed.
“I thought you were dead.””
“You weren't the one who had to think about it.””
“What does that mean?””
Calvin ignored him.
His eyes stayed on Kiara.
“You look exactly like her.””
Kiara frowned.
“Like who?””
Calvin hesitated.
Then he looked at Rochelle.
“Your mother.””
Kiara shook her head.
“No. That's not enough.””
She stepped closer.
“Are you my father?””
Calvin nodded.
“Yes.””
Her breath caught.
“Biological father?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did the DNA report say zero percent for Andre?””
“Because Andre isn't your father.””
“I know that.””
Calvin's eyes narrowed.
“And Darnell isn't your father either.””
Darnell flinched.
Kiara looked between them.
“Then who am I?””
Calvin's expression changed.
“That's the question your mother has been afraid to answer.””
Rochelle whispered, “Calvin, please.””
“You had twenty-two years.””
“I was protecting her.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
Kiara looked at Rochelle.
“What happened?””
Rochelle's tears mixed with the rain.
“Calvin came back after you were born.””
“Why?””
“To take you.””
Calvin shook his head.
“That isn't what happened.””
“You threatened me.””
“I told you I was your father.””
“You said you would take my baby.””
“I said I wanted to meet my daughter.””
“You were angry.””
“I was terrified.””
Kiara looked at Calvin.
“Why?””
He stared at her.
“Because I knew somebody had lied about who your father was.””
Darnell's voice was low.
“Don't do this here.””
Calvin turned.
“Where would you prefer?””
“Somewhere private.””
“No.””
Calvin's eyes hardened.
“She deserves to hear it.””
Kiara's hands trembled.
“Hear what?””
Calvin reached inside his coat.
Darnell immediately moved forward.
“Don't.””
Calvin stopped.
“I brought proof.””
He pulled out a plastic folder.
Inside was an old hospital bracelet.
A photograph.
And a folded document.
Kiara stared at the bracelet.
Her name was printed on it.
*BABY GIRL ROCHELLE.*
Her eyes filled.
“You kept this?””
Calvin nodded.
“The hospital gave it to me.””
“Why?””
“Because I was there when you were born.””
Rochelle closed her eyes.
Kiara looked at her.
“You told me Calvin disappeared before I was born.””
“I was scared.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it's true.””
Calvin opened the folder.
“Your mother was scared of me. Darnell was scared of what I knew. And Andre…”
He looked at Andre.
“Andre was scared of what he had done.””
Andre's face tightened.
“I didn't hurt anyone.””
Calvin stepped toward him.
“You didn't have to.””
Kiara looked at Andre.
“What did you do?””
Andre shook his head.
“Nothing.””
Calvin laughed.
“You gave Darnell the keys.””
Darnell froze.
Kiara looked at him.
“What keys?””
Calvin's eyes remained on Darnell.
“The night I disappeared, Darnell drove me to the old warehouse.””
Kiara's heart pounded.
“You drove him?””
Darnell didn't answer.
Calvin continued.
“He thought I was going to expose everything.””
Darnell finally whispered, “I didn't know what they planned.””
“Who?””
Calvin pointed at Rochelle.
“Your mother wasn't the only person keeping secrets.””
Kiara's face went cold.
“What did they plan?””
Calvin looked directly at her.
“Not to kill me.””
He paused.
“To make me disappear.””
A siren sounded in the distance.
Calvin folded the document.
“Your mother changed your birth record because she knew the truth would destroy more than one family.””
Kiara stepped closer.
“What truth?””
Calvin looked at her.
“The name on your original birth certificate wasn't mine.””
Kiara's stomach dropped.
“Then whose was it?””
Calvin opened his mouth.
May you like
But before he could answer, Rochelle screamed.
“Calvin, don't tell her!””
