Chapter 10: The Father I Never Knew

For twenty-two years, Kiara had imagined what meeting her biological father would feel like.

She had imagined tears.

A hug.

Maybe an apology.

She had never imagined standing in the rain while two men who had called themselves her fathers stared at a stranger who claimed to be her uncle.

Marcus Carter lowered his umbrella.

He looked older than the photograph in Kiara's hand, but there was no mistaking him.

The same eyes.

The same crooked smile.

The same small scar above his left eyebrow.

Darnell whispered, “Marcus.””

Marcus smiled.

“Still surprised?””

Darnell took one step toward him.

“You died.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. I disappeared.””

Kiara looked at Rochelle.

“You knew.””

Rochelle was crying too hard to speak.

Marcus crossed the street.

Calvin moved between him and Kiara.

“Don't come any closer.””

Marcus stopped.

“You're still protecting her?””

“Yes.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“You should have done that twenty-two years ago.””

Kiara looked at him.

“Are you my father?””

Marcus's smile disappeared.

“No.””

Her chest tightened.

“Then why does your name appear on my birth records?””

“Because I put it there.””

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

Kiara stared at him.

“You're going to have to do better than that.””

Marcus nodded.

“You deserve the whole story.””

Darnell's voice was cold.

“Tell her the truth.””

Marcus looked at him.

“The truth is that your daughter was never supposed to survive the first week.””

Rochelle sobbed.

Kiara went still.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“Your grandfather owed money to people who didn't forgive debts. When he died, they came looking for the inheritance.””

Calvin stepped forward.

“That isn't why they came.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know what happened.””

“I know you were stealing from them.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“And I know you helped them.””

Darnell shook his head.

“Enough.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Your mother discovered the money was legally yours before you were even born.””

Kiara looked at Rochelle.

“Grandpa left it to me?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Rochelle whispered, “Seven hundred thousand dollars.””

Kiara stared.

“That much?””

“It was more by the time you turned eighteen.””

Marcus nodded.

“Which made you valuable.””

Kiara's voice became quiet.

“So everyone was fighting over money.””

“Not everyone.””

Marcus pointed toward Darnell.

“He wanted to protect you.””

Then Calvin.

“He wanted to expose the people who were after you.””

Then Rochelle.

“She wanted to keep you hidden.””

He looked at himself.

“And I made the worst decision of all.””

Kiara waited.

“What did you do?””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I made everyone believe I was dead.””

Darnell stared.

“Why?””

“Because the people searching for the money believed I had stolen the evidence.””

“You did.””

“I stole the evidence so they couldn't find Kiara.””

Calvin shook his head.

“You disappeared and left us to deal with the consequences.””

“I thought you'd keep her safe.””

Darnell laughed bitterly.

“I did.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You did more than that.””

For the first time, his voice softened.

“You became her father.””

Darnell's eyes filled.

Kiara turned toward him.

He looked at her.

“I never wanted to replace anyone.””

She whispered, “But you did.””

Darnell nodded.

“I know.””

Kiara walked toward him.

He didn't move.

She stopped inches away.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw the little girl who needed me.””

His voice broke.

“And I was afraid if I told you the truth, you'd stop seeing me as your dad.””

Kiara's tears fell freely.

“I don't know what to call you now.””

Darnell nodded.

“You don't have to decide today.””

Kiara reached for his hand.

He hesitated.

Then she took it.

Across from them, Calvin watched silently.

Kiara turned toward him.

“And you?””

Calvin stepped closer.

“I was your biological father.””

“Was?””

He nodded.

“But I wasn't the man who raised you.””

Kiara swallowed.

“Why did you disappear?””

Calvin looked at Darnell.

“Because I was told that if I stayed, they'd hurt you.””

“Who told you?””

Marcus answered.

“Me.””

Calvin looked at him.

“You don't get to rewrite that night.””

“I know.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“I was wrong.””

Kiara stared at all three men.

Three men.

Three versions of fatherhood.

One by blood.

One by history.

One by choice.

Then she remembered the document.

“The DNA test.””

Andre stepped forward.

“I owe you an apology.””

Kiara looked at him.

“You do.””

Andre nodded.

“I knew I wasn't your father before I came here.””

“Why did you bring the report?””

“Because I thought the truth would hurt less if you saw it yourself.””

Kiara almost laughed.

“It didn't.””

“I know.””

He looked toward Rochelle.

“I also knew Marcus was alive.””

Rochelle closed her eyes.

Kiara stared.

“You knew?””

Andre nodded.

“I found him six years ago.””

Darnell's face hardened.

“You what?””

“I found him by accident.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You promised not to tell.””

“I promised until Kiara was safe.””

Kiara frowned.

“Then why now?””

Andre looked at her graduation gown.

“Because you graduated.””

He smiled sadly.

“You finally had a life strong enough to survive the truth.””

Kiara looked around.

The white arches.

The balloons.

The flowers Darnell had bought.

Her graduation celebration had become the strangest family reunion imaginable.

She turned toward Rochelle.

“One last question.””

Rochelle nodded through her tears.

“What was the secret you were never going to tell me?””

Rochelle looked at Darnell.

Then Calvin.

Then Marcus.

Finally, she faced her daughter.

“The name on the original birth certificate wasn't your father's.””

Kiara waited.

“It was yours.””

Kiara frowned.

“My name?””

Rochelle nodded.

“Your grandfather named you Kiara before you were born. He left the inheritance entirely in your name. Your birth certificate was changed so nobody could find you through the estate.””

Kiara looked at Marcus.

“And the second certificate?””

Marcus answered.

“It was hidden so the original identity could eventually be restored.””

Darnell slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the small brass key.

Then he placed it in Kiara's palm.

“You don't need us to decide who you are anymore.””

Kiara looked at the key.

“What does this open?””

Darnell smiled through his tears.

“Your future.””

For the first time that day, Kiara laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because after twenty-two years of lies, she could finally breathe.

She turned toward Darnell.

Then hugged him.

He held her tightly.

“I love you, Dad,” she whispered.

Darnell closed his eyes.

“I love you too.””

Kiara pulled away and looked at Calvin.

“I don't know what we'll become.””

Calvin nodded.

“I'll wait.””

She looked at Marcus.

“And you?””

He smiled sadly.

“I'll wait too.””

Kiara looked at Rochelle last.

Her mother stood alone beneath the white arch, crying.

Kiara walked toward her.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Kiara whispered,

“I forgive you.””

Rochelle broke down.

“But I'll never forget.””

Rochelle nodded.

“I don't expect you to.””

Kiara took her mother's hand.

The rain finally began to stop.

Sunlight broke through the clouds, catching the wet balloons and turning them gold.

Kiara looked down at the graduation bouquet Darnell had dropped earlier.

She picked it up.

One flower had fallen onto the pavement.

She placed it back among the roses.

Then she looked toward the camera.

Twenty-two years ago, everyone had decided which man would be called her father.

Today, Kiara finally understood the truth.

*Blood had given her a beginning.*

May you like

*Secrets had stolen twenty-two years.*

*But love was the reason she had survived long enough to learn the difference.*
