Chapter 4: The Man Who Never Died

The words on the back of the photograph seemed to burn through the paper.

*“Lily’s father is alive.””*

Thomas read them three times.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

For years, everyone had known the same story.

Lily Carter’s parents died in a tragic car accident.

A horrible night.

A broken family.

A grandmother who stepped forward and raised a little girl who had lost everything.

But now the foundation of that story had cracked.

The father was alive.

Thomas slowly lowered the photograph.

“Mrs. Carter…”

Eleanor looked at the ground.

“I know.””

His voice became quieter.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than the secret.

Thomas looked at her.

“How many things have you been carrying alone?””

Eleanor didn’t respond.

Because the truth was obvious.

Too many.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the wheelchair.

All the confidence she had carried earlier was gone.

She looked at the photograph.

Not with anger.

With fear.

Thomas noticed.

“You knew this was coming.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“No.””

But her voice betrayed her.

Thomas stepped closer.

“You knew Lily’s father wasn’t dead.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Stop asking questions you don’t want answers to.””

“That’s not your decision anymore.””

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“You think you’re helping?””

“I think Lily deserves to know the truth.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that until the truth destroys everything.””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Sometimes things need to be destroyed before they can be rebuilt.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You always talk like you’re some kind of hero.””

“No.””

Eleanor looked at the mansion.

“I’m just tired of pretending.””

The sentence hung between them.

Because that was what this entire family had been doing.

Pretending.

Pretending Vanessa was just a grateful young woman who became part of their lives.

Pretending Lily’s past was simple.

Pretending love could erase abandonment.

Thomas looked at the old photograph again.

“Who is he?””

Neither woman answered.

The silence became unbearable.

Then Thomas looked at Vanessa.

“You know.””

She didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward the road.

Toward the world outside the gates.

Like she wanted to run.

But there was nowhere left to go.

“His name was Marcus.””

Thomas waited.

“Marcus Reed.””

The name meant nothing to him.

But Eleanor reacted.

Just slightly.

Thomas noticed.

“You know him?””

Eleanor’s eyes moved to Vanessa.

“I knew of him.””

Vanessa looked down.

“He was not supposed to be part of Lily’s life.””

Thomas frowned.

“Why?””

Vanessa took a breath.

Because the answer was painful.

“Because Marcus was dangerous.””

The word changed everything.

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

“Dangerous how?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“He was charming.””

Thomas frowned.

“That’s not dangerous.””

“It is when someone knows exactly what people want to hear.””

She looked at the mansion.

“Marcus knew how to make people trust him.””

Eleanor’s hands tightened.

“He convinced Vanessa he loved her.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I thought he did.””

For a moment, she looked younger.

Not the woman who had pushed Eleanor through the gate.

A young woman who had believed someone’s promises.

Thomas softened slightly.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at the ground.

“When I told him I was pregnant, everything changed.””

The driveway became silent again.

“He told me he wasn’t ready.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“He said he needed time.””

“And?””

“He disappeared.””

Thomas looked at Lily’s photo.

“So you raised Lily alone?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I didn’t.””

The confession surprised him.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

“I left her here because I knew she would be safe.””

Eleanor looked hurt.

“You knew I would take care of her.””

“Yes.””

“And you still left.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

Thomas looked between them.

“You knew Eleanor loved Lily.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I knew.””

“Then why come back?””

The question returned.

The same question that had been haunting the driveway.

Why now?

Why after all these years?

Vanessa looked at the mansion.

“Because Marcus came back.””

Nobody moved.

Even Eleanor looked shocked.

“When?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Two years ago.””

Thomas stared.

“You saw him?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Outside a restaurant.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He recognized me.””

Thomas felt a chill.

“What did he want?””

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“The same thing everyone wants.””

“What?””

“Something from the Carter family.””

Eleanor looked confused.

“What does Marcus know?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“He knows Lily exists.””

The words were devastating.

Eleanor’s face changed.

A grandmother’s worst fear.

Not losing money.

Not losing a house.

Losing a child.

“He can’t take her.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“He might.””

“No.””

Eleanor’s voice became firm.

“You don’t understand.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don’t understand him.””

Thomas watched their exchange.

For the first time, he realized something.

Vanessa was not only afraid of losing the mansion.

She was afraid of someone else.

Someone worse.

“Why didn’t you tell Eleanor?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I thought I could handle it.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I couldn’t.””

The admission was quiet.

Almost invisible.

But it was the first honest thing Vanessa had said.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because you would have helped me.””

The answer confused everyone.

“Isn’t that what you wanted?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Eleanor.

“Because every time you helped me, I remembered what I lost.””

Eleanor said nothing.

“You gave Lily the life I couldn’t.””

The words were full of regret.

“And I hated you for it.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You hated someone because they loved your daughter?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

Then Thomas heard something.

A sound.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone looked around.

Vanessa reached into her coat.

Her face changed when she saw the screen.

Thomas noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept vibrating.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she did.

“Hello?””

No one could hear the voice on the other end.

But they could see Vanessa’s reaction.

Her face slowly lost color.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“Where did you get this number?””

Silence.

Then:

“No.””

Another pause.

Thomas watched her.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Don’t contact her.””

Eleanor’s eyes widened.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa ignored her.

“I said don’t go near Lily.””

The person on the phone said something.

And whatever it was made Vanessa freeze.

Because suddenly the fear turned into shock.

“No…”

Her voice broke.

“That’s impossible.””

She lowered the phone slightly.

Thomas stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at Eleanor.

Her lips moved.

But no sound came out.

Finally, she whispered:

“Marcus knows where Lily is.””

Eleanor’s hand flew to her mouth.

Thomas looked toward the mansion.

Toward the room where Lily’s childhood memories still remained.

Then Vanessa looked at the phone again.

And the next words made everyone’s blood run cold.

Because the voice on the other end had not called to threaten them.

It had called to announce something.

Vanessa slowly raised her eyes.

“He said…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“He said Lily has already met him.””
