Chapter 6: The Girl Behind the Locked Door

“Lily?””

Eleanor’s voice cracked through the phone.

“Lily, sweetheart, talk to me.””

Nothing.

Only breathing.

Small.

Frightened.

Thomas felt every muscle in his body tighten.

Vanessa stood completely still.

The woman who had walked onto the driveway that morning believing she controlled everything now looked like someone watching her entire world collapse.

“Lily!”” Eleanor called again.

A faint sound came through.

A whisper.

“Grandma…”

“I’m here.””

“Don’t hang up.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I won’t.””

The promise came instantly.

Like it was the easiest thing in the world.

Because for Eleanor, it was.

She had promised to protect Lily when she was a baby.

She had promised when Lily took her first steps.

She had promised when Lily cried after losing her parents.

And now she was promising again.

Only this time, she might not be enough.

Thomas motioned toward Vanessa.

“Put the phone on speaker.””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at Eleanor.

Eleanor nodded.

Thomas leaned closer.

“Lily, it’s Thomas. Can you hear me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Uncle Thomas?””

“Yes.””

His voice softened.

“Where are you?””

“I’m at home.””

Thomas frowned.

“Which home?””

The answer came quickly.

“The house.””

Everyone looked at the mansion.

The blood drained from Eleanor’s face.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“She’s here?””

Thomas looked around.

The mansion stood behind them.

The same mansion Vanessa had tried to remove Eleanor from.

The same mansion that suddenly felt unfamiliar.

“How?”” Thomas asked.

Lily’s breathing became faster.

“He said he knew where the keys were.””

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

“He has been inside.””

Nobody spoke.

Thomas immediately moved.

“Lily, listen to me.””

“I’m scared.””

“I know.””

“Mom told me not to talk to strangers.””

The words froze Vanessa.

Thomas looked at her.

Mom.

Not Vanessa.

Lily still saw her as mother.

Even after everything.

“I’m coming inside,” Thomas said.

“No.””

Eleanor grabbed his arm.

Everyone looked at her.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

“Don’t go alone.””

Thomas understood.

Marcus wanted people to react emotionally.

He wanted mistakes.

He wanted panic.

“We need help.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No police.””

Thomas stared.

“What?””

“No police.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved to the mansion.

“Because if Marcus wanted to hurt Lily, he would have already done it.””

Thomas didn’t like the logic.

“Then what does he want?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She just didn’t want to say it.

Eleanor did.

“He wants Lily to choose.””

The words were heavy.

Thomas looked at her.

“Choose what?””

Eleanor looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa finally whispered:

“Between the family that raised her…”

She swallowed.

“And the family that abandoned her.””

The sentence cut through everyone.

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

“You think he’s trying to turn her against Eleanor?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He’s trying to make Lily understand that everyone lied to her.””

Eleanor’s face fell.

Because that part was true.

They had hidden things.

Even if they believed they were protecting her.

Thomas looked at the mansion.

“Where is Lily?””

The phone was still connected.

“Lily?””

A small voice answered.

“I’m upstairs.””

“Are you alone?””

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Who is with you?””

Silence.

Then Lily whispered:

“My dad.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Eleanor gripped the wheelchair.

Thomas felt his heartbeat quicken.

“Lily, listen carefully. Is he near you right now?””

“Yes.””

“Can you move away from him?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why?””

The girl’s voice became smaller.

“Because he told me the truth.””

Vanessa looked like she had been hit.

“What truth?””

Lily didn’t answer.

Thomas heard a man’s voice in the background.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Lily.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus.

“You don’t have to be afraid.””

Thomas grabbed the phone.

“Marcus.””

A pause.

Then:

“Thomas.””

The way Marcus said his name made Thomas’s stomach turn.

“You’ve been listening.””

“You need to leave the girl alone.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“She’s not a girl to me.””

Thomas clenched his jaw.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s my daughter.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

The voice changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“You finally admit I exist.””

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You don’t get to walk into her life after ten years.””

“Ten years?””

Marcus replied.

“You mean ten years of pretending I never mattered?””

“You left.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You took her away from me.””

Vanessa looked stunned.

“That is not what happened.””

“Isn’t it?””

The question lingered.

Thomas watched Vanessa.

There was something there.

Something she wasn’t saying.

“Marcus,” Thomas said, “what do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“I want Lily to know the truth.””

Eleanor stepped closer to the phone.

“Truth does not require frightening a child.””

Marcus answered calmly.

“Neither does hiding it.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the weapon Marcus was using.

The truth.

A dangerous thing when mixed with manipulation.

“Let Lily go,” Eleanor said.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Marcus continued.

“Not until she hears everything.””

Thomas looked at the phone.

“Everything about what?””

Another pause.

Then Marcus said:

“About why her parents really died.””

The world stopped.

Eleanor’s face changed.

Vanessa looked down.

Thomas felt a chill.

Because that was the one thing nobody had expected.

The accident.

The story everyone accepted.

The story nobody questioned.

“What are you talking about?”” Thomas asked.

Marcus ignored him.

“Lily deserves to know what happened that night.””

Eleanor’s voice trembled.

“You promised.””

Marcus laughed.

“I promised a lot of things.””

The call suddenly became quiet.

Then Lily spoke.

“Grandma?””

Eleanor answered immediately.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is my dad telling the truth?””

Nobody moved.

That question hurt more than anything Marcus had said.

Because Lily wasn’t asking about inheritance.

Or the mansion.

Or secrets.

She was asking if the people she trusted had lied to her.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Lily…”

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“There are things I should have told you.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Even Marcus.

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

“You can’t.””

Eleanor turned toward her.

“I can’t keep protecting adults while a child carries the consequences.””

Vanessa looked away.

Because she knew.

Eleanor was right.

Thomas spoke into the phone.

“Lily, listen to me.””

“Okay.””

“Whatever you hear today, remember one thing.””

“What?””

“You were loved.””

A pause.

Then:

“By everyone?””

Thomas looked at Eleanor.

Then Vanessa.

A painful question.

One without an easy answer.

“Yes.””

He answered carefully.

“You were loved.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Lily, ask them about the night your parents died.””

Vanessa immediately said:

“No.””

The fear in her voice was unmistakable.

Thomas turned to her.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Eleanor looked at her.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Tell him.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Not like this.””

Marcus spoke from the phone.

“She deserves the truth.””

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

“What truth?””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Lily’s parents…”

She stopped.

Her voice broke.

“Her parents didn’t die in an accident.””

Eleanor looked devastated.

Thomas stared.

“What?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Because once the words escaped, there was no taking them back.

Marcus spoke.

“Now you understand.””

Thomas looked at the mansion.

At the locked doors.

At the child inside.

At the family built on secrets.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“Because Lily’s parents weren’t victims.””

A pause.

“They were running.””

Thomas felt cold.

“Running from what?””

Marcus answered:

“From someone inside the Carter family.””

The call went silent.

Then Lily screamed.

May you like

A sharp, terrified scream.

And the line went dead.
