Chapter 1: Daddy’s Other Wife

“Mom! That’s Daddy’s other wife!””

My six-year-old daughter shouted those words in the middle of a luxury charity gala, and the sound of her little voice shattered my marriage before I even understood what she meant.

I was standing beside my husband beneath three crystal chandeliers, wearing a champagne-colored maternity gown that hugged my seven-month pregnant belly. Marcus had one arm around my waist. Cameras flashed.

Guests smiled. Everyone thought we were the perfect family.

Then Lily ran forward and slammed an old smartphone onto a nearby cocktail table.

The sharp crack sent two champagne flutes rattling against each other.

“Lily!”” Marcus barked.

A waiter stopped mid-step. Conversations died across the ballroom. I watched my daughter point a trembling finger toward the champagne table, where a woman in an emerald-green gown stood surrounded by elegantly dressed guests.

Vanessa.

I recognized her immediately. She was the woman Marcus had introduced to me three months earlier as a potential donor for his charity foundation.

Now she looked as though she'd seen a ghost.

“Mom!”” Lily repeated, her small burgundy skirt swishing as she turned toward me.

“That's Daddy's other wife!””

My hand froze over my stomach.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.

Marcus released my waist and hurried toward Lily. His polished shoes clicked against the marble floor as he dropped to one knee beside her.

“Baby, what are you talking about?”” he asked, forcing a smile that never reached his eyes.

“You're confused.””

Lily pulled the phone against her chest.

“No, I'm not.””

“Give Daddy the phone.””

“No.””

His smile vanished.

I had known Marcus for eight years. I'd seen him negotiate contracts, charm wealthy investors, and talk his way out of situations that would have ruined other men. But I'd never seen him look at our daughter as though she were holding a weapon.

I stepped away from the photographers.

“Marcus,” I said quietly.

“What's going on?””

He didn't look at me.

“Nothing, Nia. Lily found something she doesn't understand.””

“Then let her explain it.””

“Nia, please.”” He finally met my eyes.

“Not here.””

That last sentence frightened me more than anything else he had said.

Not because he was embarrassed.

Because he was desperate.

Across the room, Vanessa placed her champagne flute on the table. Her fingers shook so badly that a little liquid spilled over the rim.

Lily tapped the phone screen.

“Mom, watch.””

“Lily, sweetheart,” Marcus said, his voice tightening, “this isn't a game.””

“I know.””

She unlocked the device with a familiar four-digit code.

I recognized the phone immediately. It was Marcus's old black smartphone, the one he had told me he'd lost during a business trip six months earlier. I'd helped him search his luggage, call the hotel, and cancel the number.

He'd kissed my forehead afterward and promised to replace it.

I'd never questioned him.

Lily pressed a video thumbnail.

On the screen, Marcus stood inside a hotel lobby beneath a row of golden pendant lights. He wore the same expensive watch he had on tonight. Vanessa stood beside him in a cream-colored coat, her hand resting intimately on his forearm.

The recording was slightly shaky, as though whoever had filmed it had been hiding nearby.

Marcus leaned toward Vanessa and whispered something the phone microphone barely caught.

Vanessa smiled.

Then she touched his cheek.

My stomach tightened beneath my palm.

The video continued for several seconds. Marcus glanced over his shoulder before taking Vanessa's hand and leading her toward the elevators.

Nobody in the ballroom spoke.

I stared at the screen, waiting for an explanation to appear in his face. A sign that this was a misunderstanding. A business meeting filmed from an unfortunate angle.

But there was no misunderstanding in the way Vanessa looked at him.

I'd seen that expression before.

I'd worn it myself.

I slowly lifted my eyes to my husband.

“You told me you lost this phone.””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time in eight years, my husband had no words.

And then Lily's little finger moved toward another video.
