Chapter 7: The Beneficiary Nobody Expected

“Mrs. Bennett, before you hear anything else, you need to know that your husband's original policy contains a beneficiary designation you never signed.””

The investigator's voice was calm, almost clinical.

Mine wasn't.

“What beneficiary designation?””

Across the ballroom, Marcus stood motionless beside the cocktail table. Vanessa had lowered herself into a chair again, one hand pressed against her mouth. Daniel Price watched me with the expression of a man who had just realized that the problem he came to solve was much larger than the paperwork in his briefcase.

The investigator introduced herself as Evelyn Shaw, a senior compliance officer with the insurance company.

“I'm looking at a policy issued through your husband's business,” Evelyn explained.

“The original policy names you as the primary beneficiary. A supplemental document submitted six weeks ago attempts to change the distribution of a maternity-related benefit.””

“To whom?””

“Vanessa Reed.””

A guest nearby gasped.

I gripped the phone harder.

“Why would my husband change my benefits to his mistress?””

Marcus moved toward me.

“That's not what happened.””

I covered the phone with my hand.

“Stay where you are.””

He stopped, but his eyes pleaded with me to end the call.

I turned away from him.

“Ms. Shaw, what exactly does this benefit cover?””

“The documentation describes a reimbursement and supplemental payment associated with an approved maternity arrangement. However, the file contains conflicting statements about the identity of the covered patient and the relationship between the parties.””

“Can you tell me whether Vanessa is pregnant?””

Evelyn paused.

“Ms. Reed has submitted medical documentation supporting a pregnancy-related claim. I cannot discuss her private medical details beyond what is necessary to explain the policy issue.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked down at her hands.

“How far along is she?””

“I can't confirm that.””

“Does her claim involve the same policy number as mine?””

“Yes.””

The answer seemed to suck all the air from the ballroom.

I turned toward Marcus.

“You insured both of us under the same policy?””

“It's not that simple.””

“Then make it simple!””

My voice cracked. I hated that it did. I hated that hundreds of strangers were witnessing the moment my husband stopped being the man I trusted and became someone I could no longer recognize.

Marcus approached slowly.

“Nia, the policy was designed to protect the family.””

“Which family?””

He opened his mouth, then shut it.

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“I need to tell her something.””

Marcus turned.

“You've said enough.””

“No,” Vanessa replied.

“You've decided she's heard enough. That's different.””

She stepped toward me, her emerald gown rustling against her legs.

“I didn't know you were still living as husband and wife when Marcus and I started seeing each other. I know that doesn't excuse what happened after I found out. I should have told you.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because he told me you knew about the arrangement.””

“What arrangement?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He nodded once, apparently deciding that she could speak for herself.

She took a shaky breath.

“Marcus told me that when your baby was born, everything would be settled. He said you would receive the benefits you were entitled to, and I would receive a separate payment to cover expenses connected to my pregnancy.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

Her honesty was unbearable.

I turned back toward the phone.

“Ms. Shaw, did the company approve these changes?””

“No. The supplemental designation was flagged for verification because the signature attributed to you did not match the original authorization.””

“Then why hasn't the claim been canceled?””

“Because the person who submitted it has challenged the discrepancy. We are required to investigate before making a final determination.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Can the investigator tell us who submitted it?””

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

“The electronic records indicate that the submission came through Mr. Bennett's company account,” he said.

Evelyn confirmed it.

Marcus rubbed his face.

“Someone had access to my credentials.””

“Who?”” I asked.

“I don't know.””

“Then why did you tell Vanessa the claim was legitimate?””

He looked at me.

“Because I thought it was.””

The words were so absurd that I almost laughed.

“You thought a claim using my name, my insurance, and a signature I never made was legitimate?””

“I thought the original paperwork covered it.””

“What original paperwork?””

He didn't answer.

Daniel opened his briefcase and retrieved a copy of the original policy.

“Mr. Bennett, I think we need to establish whether you knew about the supplemental designation before it was submitted.””

Marcus stared at the document.

Then he looked toward the ballroom doors.

It was the first time I'd seen him consider running.

“Marcus,” I said quietly.

“Look at me.””

He did.

“Did you change the beneficiary on my policy?””

“No.””

“Did you authorize anyone else to do it?””

His silence was devastating.

I stepped backward.

“You did.””

“I didn't understand the full implications.””

“That's not the same as no.””

He lowered his head.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Lily, who had been standing beside my gown, tugged gently at my hand.

“Mommy?””

I crouched in front of her.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

She glanced at Marcus.

“I remember something else about the phone.””

My heart sank.

“What is it?””

“Daddy was talking to Grandma on the phone last week. He said she had to bring the blue envelope before the baby came.””

Marcus's head snapped up.

“Lily, that's enough.””

She shrank back.

I immediately pulled her against me.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

He stopped, breathing hard.

I stroked Lily's hair.

“What blue envelope, baby?””

“I don't know. Grandma came to our house the next day. She went into Daddy's office and gave him something.””

I stared at Marcus.

“My mother?””

He said nothing.

My mother had spent the last month helping us prepare for the baby. She had washed tiny clothes, assembled a crib, and promised to stay with Lily when I went into labor.

Why would she be involved in a secret insurance claim?

I turned back to Evelyn.

“Is there another person listed on the policy?””

A pause followed.

“Yes,” she said.

“There is a third-party authorization attached to the original file.””

“Whose name?””

“I can only provide that information after verifying the relevant records. However, I can tell you that the authorization permits this individual to receive notices related to the maternity claim.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Was that authorization submitted recently?””

“No. It predates the supplemental designation by several months.””

Marcus's face drained of color.

Vanessa whispered, “Oh, no.””

I turned toward her.

“What do you know?””

She shook her head, trembling.

“I didn't know she was involved.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at me with tears spilling down her cheeks.

“Your mother.””

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated inside my purse.

A message appeared from my mother.

Sweetheart, please don't sign anything tonight. Your husband has been lying to you, but you don't know the whole story.

A second message followed.

And whatever Vanessa tells you, don't let Marcus leave with that folder.

I looked up.

Marcus was already reaching for the sealed folder in Daniel's briefcase.

May you like

And when he saw the messages on my screen, he whispered the one thing that made me realize my mother might know far more than either of them.

“She promised she'd keep this secret.””
