Chapter 12: The Truth About Forty-Three

Nobody spoke after Reed’s confession.

The ballroom felt smaller.

The chandeliers still shined.

The tables were still perfectly arranged.

The coffee tray was still sitting where Hayes had left it.

But everything had changed.

Because the enemy had not been outside.

It had been inside every room I had trusted.

I looked at Reed.

“Tell me what happened.””

He didn’t answer immediately.

For once, he looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just old.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Evidence that certain officials were manipulating operations for political advantage.””

The Commander-in-Chief interrupted.

“And you decided to cover it up?””

Reed looked at him.

“I decided to contain it.””

“That is not your decision to make.””

“No.””

Reed nodded.

“It was not.””

He looked at me.

“But I made it anyway.””

I stepped closer.

“The forty-third person.””

Reed’s expression changed.

“Elijah told you.””

“Yes.””

“Then you know enough.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I know nothing.””

Reed looked away.

“The forty-third person was the reason Silent Harbor existed.””

“Who was it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Agent Daniel Cross.””

The name meant nothing.

I searched my memories.

Nothing.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Reed shook his head.

“That was the point.””

The Commander-in-Chief looked confused.

“Explain.””

Reed walked toward the table.

“Daniel Cross was an intelligence officer embedded within the operation.””

“Why was he hidden?””

“Because he discovered the corruption.””

I looked at Elijah.

“Then why wasn’t he on the mission roster?””

“Because he was never supposed to survive.””

The words made my stomach turn.

Reed continued.

“The official plan was simple. Remove the evidence. Remove the witness.””

My hands tightened.

“And the forty-two soldiers?””

“Unexpected.””

The room went silent.

“They were never supposed to be rescued?””

Reed looked at me.

“No.””

Anger rose through me.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me go anyway?””

His expression shifted.

“That is the part you never understood.””

“What?””

“You changed the mission.””

I froze.

Reed continued.

“You were given one objective.””

He looked at Elijah.

“Extract Daniel Cross.””

Then at me.

“But you refused.””

I remembered.

The storm.

The damaged helicopter.

The trapped soldiers.

The impossible choice.

“I chose the forty-two.””

“Yes.””

Reed nodded.

“And that decision exposed everything.””

The Commander-in-Chief stepped closer.

“Because she saved people.””

“Because she showed the world what happened when someone refused to follow the plan.””

Reed looked at me.

“You became proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That orders can be wrong.””

The words landed heavily.

Because that was the real reason.

Not the medal.

Not the file.

Not the report.

I had become dangerous because I proved obedience was not the same as leadership.

Elijah stepped forward.

“Then why did you erase her memory?””

Reed looked at him.

“I didn’t.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Reed shook his head.

“I erased the records.””

He looked at me.

“Her memory was never gone.””

I felt cold.

“What are you saying?””

“You buried it.””

The words hit.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He pointed toward the folder.

“Your mind protected you.””

I stared.

Fragments.

The room.

The voice.

The warning.

The missing pieces.

Reed lowered his voice.

“You didn’t forget because someone forced you.””

A pause.

“You forgot because remembering would have destroyed you.””

I couldn’t answer.

Because a small part of me knew.

The truth had always been there.

Waiting.

The Commander-in-Chief picked up the device.

“Where is Daniel Cross now?””

Reed looked at him.

“Alive.””

“Where?””

Before Reed could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

A security officer rushed in.

“Sir.””

The Commander-in-Chief turned.

“What now?””

The officer looked terrified.

“We found Colonel Hayes.””

Everyone went still.

“Where?””

The officer swallowed.

“In the medical wing.””

“And?””

The officer looked at me.

“He was trying to reach Daniel Cross.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

The officer hesitated.

Then answered:

“Because Colonel Hayes says Daniel Cross is not the only survivor.””

A silence.

Then:

“There was another person on that mission.””

I stared.

“Another?””

The officer nodded.

“And Hayes says General Carter knows exactly who it is.””

The room went completely still.

Because I felt it.

A memory pushing through.

A face.

A voice.

A promise.

A person I had spent twenty years believing was never there.

Then the memory arrived.

And I whispered the name.

“Emily…”

Elijah looked at me.

“Who is Emily?””

I looked toward Reed.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

Because I remembered.

The fourth survivor.

The person who knew everything.

The person I had protected before Silent Harbor.

The person I had sworn never to reveal.

May you like

“My daughter.””

The room fell silent.
