The Medal in His Pocket / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Mission Within the Mission

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I waited for someone to laugh.

To say this was a misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything.

But nobody did.

The Commander-in-Chief kept staring at the paper.

Elijah looked at me like he already knew what this would do.

“What do you mean, I was the target?””

My voice sounded distant.

Elijah took a slow breath.

“The mission wasn’t designed to rescue forty-two people.””

He pointed toward the document.

“It was designed to bring you out.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you understand what happened before Silent Harbor.””

I remembered.

The weeks before the mission.

The unusual meetings.

The strange orders.

The sudden change in command structure.

At the time, I thought it was bureaucracy.

Now, every memory looked different.

“What did they think I had?””

Elijah hesitated.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That certain officers were manipulating intelligence reports.””

The Commander-in-Chief’s expression hardened.

“Corruption?””

Elijah nodded.

“Not just corruption.””

He looked at me.

“A network.””

The word sat heavily between us.

I looked at the document again.

My name wasn’t listed as a target.

It was hidden.

Buried beneath codes and operational language.

But it was there.

The Commander-in-Chief noticed my reaction.

“You didn’t know.””

“No.””

My answer came immediately.

“I thought the mission was exactly what they told me.””

Elijah looked down.

“That’s what they wanted.””

A memory surfaced.

A conversation with Hayes before the operation.

His nervous expression.

His unusual questions.

At the time, I thought he was worried.

Now I wondered if he was afraid.

“Why would Hayes hide my medal?””

Elijah’s face changed.

“Because the medal wasn’t the only thing taken.””

“What else?””

“The evidence.””

The Commander-in-Chief looked at him.

“What evidence?””

Elijah pointed at the folder.

“Everything connected to the real mission.””

I walked toward the table.

“So Hayes had the medal because it reminded him of what happened?””

Elijah shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because he needed people to believe you were forgotten.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Forgotten.

That was exactly how it felt.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Forgotten.

Elijah continued.

“The easiest way to erase someone is not to kill them.””

He looked around the empty ballroom.

“It’s to make everyone believe they never mattered.””

I looked at my uniform.

The same uniform Hayes had tried to reduce to nothing.

The same uniform that carried every sacrifice I had made.

The Commander-in-Chief picked up the file.

“There’s still something I don’t understand.””

“What?””

“If Hayes was protecting the truth, why humiliate General Carter tonight?””

Elijah’s expression changed.

“He wasn’t.””

I frowned.

“He wasn’t?””

“No.””

Elijah looked toward the door.

“He was trying to force you to react.””

I felt a cold realization.

“What?””

“He knew the medal would get your attention.””

The Commander-in-Chief stepped closer.

“Are you saying the humiliation was a signal?””

Elijah nodded.

“Hayes wanted you angry enough to look deeper.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t sound like him.””

“No.””

Elijah looked at me.

“Because you only know the version of Hayes they created.””

A long silence followed.

I thought about the man from earlier.

The laughter.

The insults.

The tray.

The arrogance.

Could all of it have been an act?

No.

Not all of it.

People could hide fear.

They could hide guilt.

But cruelty was harder to fake.

Elijah reached into his pocket.

He removed another item.

A photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

It showed three people standing together.

Me.

Elijah.

And Marcus Hayes.

Before everything went wrong.

Before the mission.

Before the lies.

I stared at Hayes’ face.

He looked younger.

Different.

Not friendly.

But human.

“When was this taken?”” I asked.

“The night before Silent Harbor.””

I looked closer.

Something was written on the back.

A message.

My fingers turned the photo over.

Four words.

*Trust no commander above you.*

My blood ran cold.

Because beneath the message was a signature.

Not Elijah’s.

Not Hayes’.

Mine.

The Commander-in-Chief saw it.

His expression changed.

“Ava…”

I couldn’t speak.

Because I had written those words.

But I had no memory of doing it.

Elijah watched me carefully.

“That’s why I came back.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because someone erased your memories of that night.””

The room went silent.

The Commander-in-Chief stepped forward.

“Captain Brooks, choose your next words carefully.””

Elijah nodded.

“I will.””

He looked directly at me.

“General Carter…”

A pause.

“You didn’t save forty-two people during Silent Harbor.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

May you like

His voice became quiet.

“You saved forty-three.””
