Chapter 10: The Man From Cassandra’s Past
“Ask your wife why your mother begged her to stop.””
Adrian’s words landed harder than anything else that night.
My father stood frozen.
I watched his face carefully.
Not because I expected him to know the answer.
Because I was terrified he did.
“Marcus?”” I whispered.
He didn’t respond.
His eyes stayed locked on Adrian.
The man standing in our living room looked calm.
Too calm.
Like he had walked into this moment a hundred times in his mind.
Cassandra looked completely different.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect posture.
The sharp voice.
Everything.
She looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she said.
Adrian smiled.
“You always say that when you’re afraid.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Afraid of him?””
Cassandra looked at my father.
Then away.
That small movement answered more than words.
My father’s voice lowered.
“Cassandra.””
She swallowed.
“I can explain.””
He laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
The room felt heavy.
Like every person inside it was carrying a different version of the same story.
And somehow, I was the only one who had never heard any of them.
Adrian walked farther inside.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“You need to leave.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Still protecting them?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I’m protecting Maya.””
Adrian looked at me.
“No.””
His smile disappeared.
“You’re protecting the wrong person.””
My father moved between us.
“You don’t get to walk into my house and threaten my daughter.””
Adrian studied him.
“Your house?””
He glanced around.
“Interesting.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at Cassandra.
“She never told you, did she?””
Cassandra’s voice shook.
“Stop.””
Adrian ignored her.
“She never told you how close your family came to losing everything.””
My father stared.
“Explain.””
Adrian smiled.
“That’s what I’ve been waiting for.””
Cassandra stepped forward.
“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””
Adrian laughed.
“There she is.””
“What?””
“The woman who always decides what people should know.””
Cassandra’s eyes flashed.
“You destroyed my life.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You did that yourself.””
The accusation hung there.
I looked at Cassandra.
For years, I thought she was simply cruel.
A woman who disliked me because I reminded her of my mother.
But now I wondered.
What had happened before I was old enough to understand?
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“What happened between you two?””
Adrian looked at him.
“You really don’t know.””
“No.””
“Your wife made sure you didn’t.””
Cassandra closed her eyes.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“Tell me.””
She stayed silent.
Adrian answered for her.
“I was her husband.””
My father’s expression changed.
“I know that.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You know the name. Not the story.””
He pointed toward the memory card.
“Your wife’s secret started before she ever met you.””
Marcus looked at the card.
“What does that have to do with Maya’s mother?””
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“Everything.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because your mother found out Cassandra wasn’t just running from me.””
Cassandra’s face turned pale.
“Don’t.””
Adrian continued.
“She was running from what she had done.””
My father looked at Cassandra.
“What did you do?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t hurt anyone.””
Adrian looked at her.
“I never said you did.””
The room went silent.
That was worse.
Because it meant there was something else.
Something hidden between the accusations.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Adrian, enough games.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You always hated that I knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
Adrian smiled.
“Ask Daniel why he stopped answering your wife’s calls.””
My father turned.
“What?””
Daniel froze.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Marcus’s voice became sharper.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“I knew Cassandra before you did.””
Cassandra whispered:
“Daniel, don’t.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You deserve to know.””
My father waited.
Daniel continued.
“Your wife contacted me after your mother died.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Cassandra.
“She wanted help.””
Cassandra’s face changed.
“I was scared.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
My father looked between them.
“Help with what?””
Daniel looked at the memory card.
“With Adrian.””
Adrian smiled.
“Finally.””
Marcus stared.
“What were you afraid of?””
Cassandra’s voice broke.
“I thought he was going to come back.””
“Why?””
She looked at Adrian.
“Because he knew too much.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“About you.””
Cassandra looked away.
“About everyone.””
My father stepped back.
“So my wife spent years hiding this?””
Cassandra whispered:
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked all of us.
Marcus looked hurt.
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
Cassandra looked toward the broken photograph.
“Everything.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My heart stopped.
Another envelope.
Another secret.
“I came here for one reason.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Adrian placed it on the table.
“To give Maya the truth her mother wanted her to have.””
I stared at the envelope.
My name wasn’t written on it.
But I knew.
Somehow, I knew.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“If this is another trick—”
“It isn’t.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Your mother left this for you.””
My hands shook.
I took one step forward.
But before I could reach it, Cassandra grabbed the envelope.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
She held it tightly.
Her eyes filled with fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
Cassandra looked at me.
And whispered:
“Because your mother never knew the whole truth.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then Marcus asked the question nobody wanted answered.
“What truth?””
