Chapter 11: The Recording My Mother Hid
Cassandra held the envelope against her chest.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
It was almost strange.
After everything that had happened, after every accusation and every secret, the thing stopping us was a simple piece of paper.
Something so small.
Something my mother had touched.
Something she had chosen to hide.
Marcus stared at Cassandra.
“Give it to Maya.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“Cassandra.””
“I’m trying to protect her.””
I stepped forward.
“Stop saying that.””
Everyone looked at me.
I pointed at the envelope.
“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody ever asks what I want.””
Cassandra looked hurt.
Maybe genuinely.
But I couldn’t forget the suitcase.
The photograph.
The years of feeling like a guest in my own home.
“I want the truth.””
She looked down.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent years thinking my mother was gone and that was the worst thing that could happen.””
I looked around the room.
“I was wrong.””
My father lowered his eyes.
Because he knew.
The worst part wasn’t losing my mother.
It was losing the truth about her.
Marcus slowly walked toward Cassandra.
“Give me the envelope.””
She didn’t move.
“Please.””
That word surprised everyone.
Cassandra looked at him.
“Marcus…”
“Please.””
Her hands loosened.
Slowly.
She gave it to him.
He handed it to me.
I stared at the envelope.
My fingers touched the paper.
And suddenly, all the anger disappeared.
For a moment, I was just a daughter holding something her mother left behind.
I opened it.
Inside was a small note.
And a flash drive.
My heart raced.
Daniel whispered:
“A recording.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian smiled faintly.
“But I knew she always kept copies.””
Cassandra looked at the flash drive.
“You don’t understand what she recorded.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me.””
She didn’t.
That silence was enough.
My father found a laptop from the office.
Nobody spoke while he connected the drive.
The screen appeared.
One file.
No title.
Just a date.
The date was one week before my mother died.
I stopped breathing.
Marcus looked at me.
“You don’t have to watch.””
I looked at him.
“Yes, I do.””
He nodded.
The video opened.
For several seconds, there was only darkness.
Then my mother appeared.
Older than in my memories.
Tired.
But still beautiful.
My entire body froze.
“Mom…”
The word came out without thinking.
Everyone went silent.
On the screen, she looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something happened.””
My hands covered my mouth.
Her voice.
I had forgotten her voice.
“My first instinct was to protect Maya.””
She paused.
Then looked away.
“But I realized protecting her doesn’t mean hiding the truth forever.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
A tear moved down his face.
My mother continued.
“Marcus, if you’re watching this, I need you to understand something.””
The room became completely still.
“You were never the person I was afraid of.””
My father opened his eyes.
He looked confused.
My mother continued.
“The person I feared was the person who would use your love against you.””
Everyone looked at Cassandra.
She looked down.
My mother’s voice shook slightly.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
The video paused for a second.
Then continued.
“Cassandra was not the beginning of this.””
My heart stopped.
Not the beginning?
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“She was a part of it.””
Cassandra whispered:
“No.””
My father turned.
“What does that mean?””
The video continued.
“I need Maya to know something.””
I leaned closer.
“Your father loved you.””
My eyes filled.
“He loved me too.””
Marcus covered his face.
“But love doesn’t mean someone cannot be manipulated.””
The sentence hit him.
My mother continued.
“Marcus, someone has been using our family for years.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Then my mother said:
“The person who started this is someone you trust.””
The video suddenly distorted.
Static filled the screen.
Then the audio returned.
My mother’s voice became quieter.
“If anything happens to me, find the person who benefited from my silence.””
The screen froze.
A second later, the file ended.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody knew what to say.
Then Cassandra whispered:
“She knew.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Knew what?””
Cassandra looked at the black screen.
“She knew before I did.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Cassandra looked at him.
“You never told me everything.””
The room shifted.
Now everyone was looking at Adrian.
His calm expression disappeared.
Marcus noticed.
“Adrian.””
The man stayed silent.
“What did she mean?””
Adrian looked at the memory card.
Then at me.
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
“I didn’t expect her to record that part.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What part?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
My father’s voice became cold.
“Answer me.””
Adrian looked at Cassandra.
Then said:
“Your wife wasn’t investigating me.””
A pause.
“She was investigating someone else.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your father’s closest friend.””
