Chapter 8: The Soldier They Chose
Nia stood motionless.
The photograph remained in Marcus’s hand.
The words on the back seemed impossible.
Find the soldier who saw everything.
Not “find the person responsible.””
Not “find the missing officer.””
Find the soldier.
Her.
Maya looked at Nia.
“Did you know about this?””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus studied the photograph.
“Someone planned this.””
Nia looked toward the SUV.
The vehicle that had been sitting there all morning.
Waiting.
Watching.
She remembered the crash.
The sound.
The movement.
The voice.
Someone had known she would be there.
Someone had known she would notice.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“You received messages. Your husband’s tag was found. This photo was hidden in the vehicle.””
Evelyn looked exhausted.
“Yes.””
“Why come here?””
She looked at Nia.
“Because I thought you were involved.””
Nia’s expression hardened.
“You accused me.””
“I was wrong.””
The apology came quietly.
Almost painfully.
But Nia didn’t accept it immediately.
“You didn’t just suspect me.””
Evelyn looked down.
“You wanted me to look guilty.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Maya asked:
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at the cameras.
Then at Nia.
“Because whoever did this wanted a distraction.””
Marcus nodded.
“And you gave them one.””
Evelyn didn’t argue.
Nia looked at her.
“You knew there was someone else.””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected my life could be destroyed and still blamed me?””
Evelyn’s face changed.
Regret.
Real regret.
“My son was hurt.””
“And you chose revenge before truth.””
Evelyn had no response.
The words stayed there.
Heavy.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“We need to find out who planted this.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Not Evelyn’s.
Not Marcus’s.
Nia’s.
She looked down.
Unknown number.
Her hand stopped.
Marcus noticed.
“Answer it.””
Nia hesitated.
Then accepted.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only silence.
Then breathing.
A voice finally spoke.
“Sergeant Carter.””
Nia’s entire body stiffened.
The voice was calm.
Familiar.
But impossible.
“Who is this?””
The person ignored the question.
“You found the card.””
Marcus immediately moved closer.
Maya raised her camera.
Nia looked at him.
“How do you know that?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I was there.””
The call remained open.
Everyone listened.
Nia’s voice became sharper.
“Who are you?””
Another pause.
Then the voice said:
“You need to stop Captain Reed from opening that file.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
“What file?””
The voice continued.
“Because once he sees what happened three months ago…”
A crackling sound.
The connection weakened.
Nia stepped away.
“Wait.””
The voice returned for one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
“Your missing officer didn’t disappear.””
Silence.
Then the call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at Nia.
Evelyn looked terrified.
Maya slowly lowered her camera.
Because everyone understood the same thing.
Daniel Cross was not a missing person.
He was connected.
Marcus turned toward the SUV.
“Open the file.””
Nia looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Marcus nodded.
“No.””
He looked at the memory card.
“But I’m sure we need the truth.””
The officers prepared the evidence.
The reporters moved closer.
Evelyn stood frozen.
And somewhere inside that SUV was the answer to a mystery that had already destroyed too many lives.
Marcus inserted the card again.
The screen lit up.
The file appeared.
One folder.
One date.
Three months earlier.
Nia stared at the screen.
Because the folder name was not a location.
Not a case number.
Not an investigation code.
It was her name.

*SERGEANT NIA CARTER.*
And Marcus was about to open it.
