Chapter 9: The File With My Name

The screen showed only one thing.

A folder.

A name.

*SERGEANT NIA CARTER.*

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The bright military entrance felt completely different now.

The same reporters stood behind the security line.

The same ambulance waited nearby.

The same black SUV sat under the morning sun.

But the mystery had changed.

This was no longer about a crash.

It was about why someone had been watching Nia long before it happened.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Who created this file?””

Nobody answered.

The officers checked the device.

“The file is encrypted.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“You know anyone who would create something like this?””

Nia shook her head slowly.

“No.””

But even as she said it, memories began moving through her mind.

Small moments.

Strange conversations.

Questions that felt too specific.

Assignments that changed without explanation.

People who watched her work but never explained why.

She had always believed the military noticed everything.

She never imagined someone was studying her.

Maya stepped closer.

“Sergeant Carter, are you saying you had no idea someone had a file on you?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“But someone did.””

Evelyn looked at the screen.

Her anger was gone.

Her confidence was gone.

Only fear remained.

“I knew.””

Everyone turned.

Nia stared at her.

“What?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I knew there was information about you.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“And you didn’t tell us?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I didn’t know what it meant.””

Nia’s voice became colder.

“You knew my name was connected to this.””

“Yes.””

“And you still accused me.””

Evelyn looked like she wanted to defend herself.

But she couldn’t.

Because there was no defense.

“I thought you were part of it.””

Nia stared at her.

“Part of what?””

Evelyn looked toward the SUV.

“My husband’s disappearance.””

The words silenced everyone.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“You thought Sergeant Carter was involved in Daniel Cross going missing?””

“I thought she knew something.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Nia.

“Because Daniel mentioned you.””

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

“When?””

“Two weeks before he disappeared.””

“What did he say?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then:

“He said, ‘If anything happens to me, find Sergeant Carter. She’s the only one who noticed.’”

Nia froze.

The sentence hit harder than she expected.

The only one who noticed.

Marcus looked at her.

“What did you notice?””

Nia didn’t answer immediately.

Because the memory was buried beneath months of confusion.

Daniel Cross had been her commanding officer.

Respected.

Experienced.

Careful.

Three months earlier, she had noticed something during a security review.

A missing access record.

A door that appeared unlocked when it shouldn’t have been.

A report that had been changed after submission.

She had mentioned it.

But nobody listened.

Or at least, she thought nobody listened.

“I reported a security issue.””

Marcus frowned.

“What kind?””

Nia looked at him.

“Someone was using military access without authorization.””

The officer beside Marcus looked surprised.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Marcus turned to the computer.

“Same time as Lieutenant Cross disappeared.””

Nia nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya looked between them.

“So Daniel Cross knew someone was inside the system?””

“Yes.””

“And you found it?””

Nia looked at the folder with her name.

“Apparently.””

Marcus opened the file.

The encryption screen appeared.

A message flashed.

*IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED.*

Everyone watched.

Marcus tried his credentials.

Rejected.

The officer tried.

Rejected.

Evelyn tried.

Rejected.

Then the screen changed.

*SERGEANT CARTER REQUIRED.*

Nia stared.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“It needs you.””

She stepped closer.

Her hands felt heavy.

“What if I open it?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Because they both knew.

Whatever was inside had been waiting for her.

Not anyone else.

Her.

Maya whispered:

“Sergeant…”

Nia looked at the cameras.

The reporters.

The officers.

Then the SUV.

A vehicle that had brought her here.

A vehicle that had carried a secret.

She placed her hand near the screen.

The system scanned.

A green light appeared.

*ACCESS GRANTED.*

The folder opened.

Inside were dozens of files.

Reports.

Photos.

Messages.

And one video.

Created three months earlier.

Marcus clicked it.

The screen showed Daniel Cross.

Alive.

Everyone froze.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

The video quality was clear.

Daniel sat in a dark room.

His uniform was missing.

His face looked exhausted.

But his voice was steady.

“If you’re watching this, it means they failed to stop Sergeant Nia Carter from finding the truth.””

Nia stopped breathing.

Daniel continued.

“Nia, I need you to understand something.””

The video paused for a second.

Then resumed.

“You were never the target.””

Nia stared.

“You were the witness.””

Marcus looked at her.

Daniel’s voice continued.

“Three months ago, you discovered an unauthorized operation inside this base. You reported it. They buried the report.

They changed the records. They convinced everyone it never happened.””

The screen showed documents.

Access logs.

Names.

Dates.

Nia recognized some.

People she had worked with.

People she trusted.

Daniel continued.

“I tried to expose it.””

A pause.

Then:

“That is why I disappeared.””

Evelyn whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Marcus watched carefully.

“Who did this?””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Someone with authority.””

The video flickered.

Then another message appeared.

*FINAL WARNING.*

Marcus leaned closer.

Daniel’s final words played.

“Nia, if you found this, it means the person behind this already knows.””

A sound came from outside.

A vehicle door closing.

Everyone turned.

The black SUV.

Nia looked through the window.

Someone was standing near it.

A figure.

Watching.

Marcus immediately reached for his radio.

“Secure the entrance.””

Officers moved.

Maya backed away.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.””

Nia looked at her.

“You know who that is?””

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“I know who it might be.””

Marcus turned.

“Might be?””

Evelyn stared through the glass.

May you like

And said:

“Daniel.””
