Chapter 6: The Girl Who Carried Ethan’s Last Secret
The word *killed* echoed through the hallway.
Not disappeared.
Not lost.
Not gone.
Killed.
For five years, I had forced myself to believe Ethan was somewhere.
Even when the police stopped searching.
Even when people told me to move on.
Even when Vanessa told me that some questions didn’t have answers.
I never accepted that my son was dead.
Because a father’s heart does something strange.
It keeps a door open.
Even when the world says there is nothing waiting on the other side.
But now a young woman who looked like she carried pieces of my own blood in her face was standing in my home, telling me someone had taken my son from me.
I stared at her.
She stared back.
And the strangest part was not that she looked familiar.
It was that she looked like Ethan.
Not exactly.
But enough.
The same eyes.
The same small crease between her eyebrows when she was scared.
The same way she held her shoulders when she was trying not to cry.
My daughter.
A person I never knew existed.
A person my son had known.
A person who knew how Ethan died.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
Her lips trembled.
“I told you.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“I mean who are you really?””
She looked down.
“My name is Maya Brooks.””
“Your mother?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Maya.
“Who is your mother?””
Maya swallowed.
“She’s gone.””
“What does that mean?””
“She died when I was little.””
The hallway became quiet.
I studied her face.
“Why are you here?””
Maya looked at the letter in my hand.
“Because Ethan wanted me to come here if he couldn’t.””
My chest tightened.
“He knew something would happen?””
Maya nodded.
“He knew someone was watching him.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
She looked toward the windows.
Then toward the front door.
The same way Vanessa had looked earlier.
Like this house had ears.
“Not here.””
I almost laughed.
The phrase again.
Everyone had a reason why the truth couldn’t be spoken.
Everyone had a secret room.
A hidden document.
A warning.
I was tired of secrets.
“No.””
Maya looked surprised.
“No?””
“You’re going to tell me now.””
“Daniel—”
I turned toward Vanessa.
“You both have spent years deciding what I can handle.””
My voice shook.
“You decided when I deserved answers. You decided when I deserved the truth.””
I looked between them.
“That ends tonight.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Maya nodded.
“Okay.””
She stepped into the living room.
“I’ll tell you.””
Vanessa followed slowly.
But I noticed something.
Vanessa didn’t look angry.
She looked afraid.
Like she already knew what Maya was going to say.
Maya sat on the edge of the couch.
Her hands were shaking.
“Ethan found me three years ago.””
I froze.
“Three years ago?””
She nodded.
“He searched for me.””
“Why?””
“Because he found records.””
“What records?””
“Birth records.””
I stared.
“He found out about me?””
“Yes.””
Maya looked down.
“He told me he had spent his whole life feeling like something was missing.””
My throat tightened.
“He felt that?””
She nodded.
“He said he loved you. He said you were a good father.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because they were exactly what I needed to hear.
But they came from someone else.
“He also said there was always something strange.””
“What?””
Maya looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“People were lying about where you came from.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Maya took a deep breath.
“Ethan discovered that the man you believed was your father…”
She stopped.
My heartbeat changed.
“What?””
“He wasn’t.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
Maya shook her head.
“Ethan found DNA records.””
“No.””
“He found documents hidden in the same room under the house.””
I looked toward the floor.
The hidden basement.
The room that had destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“He believed someone had spent decades controlling your family.””
I stood still.
My entire life suddenly felt like a photograph someone had torn apart.
“My parents…”
“Daniel.””
Maya’s voice softened.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“I spent five years looking for my son.””
I looked at the two women in front of me.
“And now I find out I don’t even know myself.””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“That’s what Ethan was trying to fix.””
“What happened to him?””
She looked down.
And for the first time, she seemed truly afraid.
“He got too close.””
“Too close to who?””
Maya didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Thomas.””
Her head lifted.
“You know him?””
“He was my best friend.””
Maya’s face changed.
“Then you don’t know him.””
The sentence hit hard.
“Explain.””
Maya reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
I recognized the paper immediately.
The same old style.
The same kind of envelope hidden in the basement.
“He left this for me.””
“Who?””
“Ethan.””
My fingers moved before my brain did.
I took it.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a note.
Only one sentence.
*Dad, if Maya found you, then I failed.*
My vision blurred.
I gripped the paper.
“No.””
Maya whispered:
“He didn’t mean he failed because he died.””
I looked at her.
“Then why?””
“Because he couldn’t protect you.””
The room went cold.
I looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
“Everything.””
“What everything?””
Maya’s eyes met mine.
“The reason Ethan disappeared.””
I moved toward the table.
“There’s a computer upstairs.””
“No.””
Maya grabbed my arm.
Her grip surprised me.
“Not connected to the internet.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because whoever did this has access to your devices.””
My eyes narrowed.
“My devices?””
She nodded.
“Ethan found something.””
“What?””
“He found that someone had been tracking your family for years.””
The words landed slowly.
Tracking.
Watching.
Controlling.
“How?””
Maya looked at Vanessa.
“She knows.””
I turned.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“No.””
My anger returned.
“Not again.””
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
I pointed at her.
“Every time we get close to the truth, someone says stop.””
Vanessa looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me what you know.””
She looked at Maya.
Maya nodded slightly.
Like she was giving permission.
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Thomas wasn’t just your friend.””
I waited.
“He was involved before you met him.””
“Involved with what?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Your family.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
“He knew about Ethan.””
“No.””
“He knew about Maya.””
I looked at Maya.
“And he knew about you.””
I stepped backward.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Thomas was the one who gave Ethan the records.””
The room froze.
“What?””
“He wanted Ethan to find out.””
“Why would he do that?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because Thomas didn’t want Ethan to expose the truth.””
She looked toward the front window.
“He wanted Ethan to disappear.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
All three of us stopped.
Maya’s face changed instantly.
“He’s here.””
I looked toward the window.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because a shadow moved across the front porch.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like someone who knew this house belonged to him.
The door handle turned.
My entire body prepared for whatever came next.
The lock clicked.
Once.
Twice.
Then the front door opened.
And a familiar voice filled the room.
“Daniel.””
I knew that voice.
I had trusted that voice for twenty years.
Thomas Reed stepped inside.
Calm.
Smiling.
Like nothing had happened.
Like he hadn’t just walked into a house full of secrets.
His eyes moved from me…
to Maya…
to the flash drive in my hand.
And his smile disappeared.
“Where did you get that?””
I tightened my grip.
Thomas looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
my best friend looked afraid of me.
