Chapter 7: The Friend Who Built the Trap
For twenty years, I called him my brother.
I trusted Thomas Reed with my business.
My home.
My family.
I had given him keys to every door in my life.
And now he stood inside my living room, staring at a flash drive like it was a weapon pointed directly at his heart.
The silence between us was unbearable.
Thomas slowly closed the front door behind him.
The calm expression he always wore was gone.
No friendly smile.
No confident handshake.
No jokes.
Only fear.
“Daniel,” he said quietly.
I tightened my grip on the flash drive.
“Don’t.””
Thomas stopped.
“Don’t say my name like nothing happened.””
His eyes moved toward Maya.
Then toward Vanessa.
Then back to me.
“I can explain.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“That’s what everyone says right before they tell me another lie.””
Thomas looked hurt.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“You knew Ethan.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I knew him.””
“You told me you barely spoke to him.””
Thomas looked down.
“That was before.””
“Before what?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Before you gave him those documents?””
Thomas remained silent.
“Before you helped him find the hidden room?””
Still nothing.
My voice rose.
“Before my son disappeared?””
Maya moved closer to me.
“Daniel, be careful.””
Thomas looked at her.
And something passed between them.
Something I noticed.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You know him,” I said.
Maya didn’t respond.
I looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Thomas sighed.
“This is bigger than you think.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I held up the flash drive.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
The room felt like it was closing around us.
“You don’t get to control the story.””
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
“Did you tell him everything?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Enough.””
Thomas gave a bitter smile.
“Enough?””
His eyes returned to me.
“She never knew the whole truth.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What does he mean?””
She looked away.
That tiny movement made my stomach tighten.
Another secret.
Another piece missing.
Thomas walked slowly into the room.
“I came here because I knew you would find the basement eventually.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Thomas looked around the house.
“This house was never just a house.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your family has been connected to something for a very long time.””
I shook my head.
“You’re talking in circles.””
“Because the truth is complicated.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“The truth is something you’ve been hiding.””
Thomas looked at the flash drive.
“Ethan wasn’t supposed to find it.””
My heart tightened.
“Find what?””
Thomas looked at Maya.
“The records.””
“What records?””
“The ones proving who Daniel really is.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had disappeared.
Again.
The same mystery.
The same words.
Who I really was.
I looked at Thomas.
“You know who I am.””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
“You knew.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“You knew my whole life was built on a lie.””
“Yes.””
“And you still stood beside me.””
“Yes.””
The answer was so simple.
So calm.
I wanted him to deny it.
I wanted him to fight.
Anything would have been easier.
But he just stood there.
Accepting it.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””
I stared.
“By lying to me?””
“By keeping you away from the truth.””
“That’s not protection.””
My voice cracked.
“That’s imprisonment.””
Thomas looked down.
For the first time, he looked old.
Tired.
Not like the powerful businessman everyone respected.
Just a man who had carried something too heavy for too long.
“You think Ethan hated you because you argued with him?””
The question caught me off guard.
I didn’t answer.
Thomas continued.
“He didn’t.””
My throat tightened.
“How do you know?””
“Because he told me.””
The room went still.
“You talked to him?””
Thomas nodded.
“When?””
“The night he disappeared.””
I stepped back.
“You were with him?””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
The pain that hit me was physical.
“You were with my son the night he vanished?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix it?””
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“You let me believe my son abandoned me.””
“I didn’t.””
“You watched me search for him.””
“Yes.””
“You watched me break.””
Thomas’s voice became quiet.
“I know.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“Then why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because Ethan asked me not to tell you.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Of what would happen if you knew.””
I looked at Maya.
Then Vanessa.
Then Thomas.
Everyone had been afraid of something.
Everyone had been protecting some secret.
Except me.
I was the only person who had been living in the dark.
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Thomas was silent.
Then he slowly sat down.
“Ethan came to my office.””
I listened.
“He had the documents. He had the photographs. He had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Thomas looked at me.
“That someone had been changing your life from the moment you were born.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Maya.
“Tell him.””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“He deserves to know.””
Maya looked at me.
Then quietly said:
“Your biological father wasn’t the man who raised you.””
I closed my eyes.
Even though I already knew this part.
Hearing it again made it real.
“But that’s not the worst part.””
I looked at her.
“What is?””
Maya swallowed.
“Your biological father was connected to the organization that has been watching your family.””
Organization.
The word felt unreal.
Like something from a movie.
But my entire life had started feeling unreal.
“What organization?””
Nobody answered.
Thomas stood.
“The same one that Ethan discovered.””
“And?””
“And the same one that wanted him silent.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Thomas’s eyes narrowed.
“Evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
He looked toward the windows.
Then the locked door.
“Evidence that Ethan didn’t just discover the truth.””
A pause.
“He recorded the person who came after him.””
My heart stopped.
“Recorded?””
Thomas nodded.
“A confession.””
I stared.
“Whose confession?””
Thomas didn’t speak.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
His hands were shaking.
“Daniel, before you watch anything on that drive, you need to understand one thing.””
“What?””
“The person who destroyed Ethan’s life…”
He looked directly at me.
“Was not a stranger.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
Maya gasped.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
Then we heard it.
A sound from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone walking through the house.
Thomas whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
His face had gone pale.
“Because I locked the door behind me.””
Another step.
Closer.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A voice none of us expected.
A voice I had not heard in five years.
“Dad…”
My entire body froze.
The darkness swallowed the room.
The voice came again.
“Dad, don’t trust any of them.””
The flashlight beam shook as I pointed it toward the stairs.
May you like
And standing at the top…
was Ethan.
