Chapter 10: The Truth He Buried
Maya stared at the unfinished sentence.
*I knew the truth about what happened to—*
The page ended there.
Her hands trembled.
“Where’s the rest?””
Thomas slowly reached into his briefcase.
Arthur whispered, “Thomas, don't.””
Thomas pulled out another sheet.
“The final page was removed from the original file.””
Maya looked at him.
“By who?””
Thomas glanced toward Arthur.
“I don't know.””
Arthur shook his head.
“I never saw it.””
Maya's voice broke.
“You're lying again.””
“I swear.””
Rose stepped toward him.
“Arthur, what did you do?””
Arthur looked at his mother.
“I didn't hurt anyone.””
Maya froze.
“I didn't ask if you hurt anyone.””
Arthur's face went pale.
She stepped closer.
“What happened eleven years ago?””
Arthur swallowed.
“Your grandfather found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That I had been taking money from his business.””
Maya waited.
Arthur's eyes filled.
“I wasn't stealing it for myself.””
“Then what were you doing?””
“I was paying someone.””
“Who?””
Arthur looked at Rose.
“Your grandfather's son.””
Maya frowned.
“What?””
Thomas suddenly closed his eyes.
Rose whispered, “Arthur…”
Maya turned to Thomas.
“What does he mean?””
Thomas looked at her.
“You had an uncle.””
Silence.
Maya stared.
“I don't have an uncle.””
“You were told you didn't.””
Arthur sat down heavily.
Maya felt her heart pounding.
“Who was he?””
Thomas answered.
“His name was Marcus.””
Rose's face crumpled.
“Marcus was your grandfather's son from a previous relationship.””
Maya stared at her grandmother.
“You knew?””
Rose shook her head.
“I found out after your grandfather died.””
Arthur spoke quietly.
“Marcus was in trouble.””
“What kind of trouble?””
“He owed people money.””
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“So Dad stole Grandpa's money to pay Marcus?””
“Not exactly.””
Thomas opened another folder.
“Marcus had discovered the trust.””
Maya looked at him.
“He knew about the inheritance?””
“Yes.””
“And he threatened Grandpa?””
Thomas nodded.
“He threatened to expose a secret.””
Rose whispered, “What secret?””
Thomas looked at Arthur.
Arthur couldn't speak.
Thomas answered.
“Marcus claimed your grandfather had caused a fatal accident eleven years before.””
Maya's blood ran cold.
“What accident?””
Rose's face had gone completely white.
Thomas continued.
“A man named Daniel Reed was killed in a construction accident connected to your grandfather's company.””
Maya looked at Arthur.
“And Grandpa caused it?””
“No,” Arthur whispered.
“He didn't.””
Thomas nodded.
“Daniel died because safety reports were falsified.””
Maya stared at him.
“By who?””
Arthur looked at the floor.
Thomas said:
“Arthur.””
Rose staggered backward.
“No.””
Maya couldn't move.
“Dad?””
Arthur's eyes filled.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“I changed the inspection records.””
“Why?””
“Because the company was going under.””
Maya shook her head.
“You knew someone could die.””
“I never thought it would happen.””
“And when Daniel died?””
“I panicked.””
Thomas's voice was cold.
“You paid Marcus to stay silent.””
Maya looked at Arthur.
“With Grandpa's money?””
“Yes.””
Arthur nodded.
“Your grandfather found out.””
Maya's breathing became shallow.
“And that's why he created the trust.””
“Yes.””
“Because he knew what you had done.””
“Yes.””
“And he was going to report you?””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Rose covered her mouth.
“You destroyed your own father.””
Arthur whispered, “I was scared.””
“You stole from him.””
“I was desperate.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You lied to Grandma.””
“I know.””
Maya wiped her tears.
“Then why did you take my money eleven years later?””
Arthur looked at her.
“Because Marcus came back.””
Maya froze.
“He was alive?””
Thomas nodded.
“He had been living under another name.””
Arthur continued.
“He found me.””
“And demanded money.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Two hundred thousand.””
Maya stared at him.
“You owed him that much?””
“No.””
Arthur shook his head.
“He wanted the entire trust.””
Maya looked at Thomas.
“Then why didn't you tell Grandma?””
“Because Arthur threatened to destroy the family.””
Arthur immediately said, “I never threatened her.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You threatened me.””
Arthur went silent.
Maya remembered the messages.
The account.
The eighteen thousand.
The missing forty thousand.
She suddenly understood.
“Marcus is behind this.””
Arthur nodded.
“He found the account.””
“Then why did Elena know?””
“She worked with Marcus.””
Maya's eyes widened.
“Denise?””
Arthur shook his head.
“Denise tried to help me.””
“Angela?””
“She was trying to get her own debt paid.””
Maya looked at Thomas.
“And you?””
“I was gathering evidence.””
Thomas opened the last folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A man stood beside Arthur.
Maya had never seen him before.
Thomas pointed.
“Marcus.””
Maya stared at the photograph.
Then she looked at the date.
It was taken three months earlier.
“He's alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Already inside the house.””
Maya's blood turned cold.
“What?””
A voice came from the hallway.
“Hello, Maya.””
Everyone turned.
A tall Black man stepped into the living room.
He was in his forties, wearing a black coat.
His eyes were calm.
Almost too calm.
Arthur stood abruptly.
“Marcus.””
Marcus smiled.
“You finally told them.””
Maya backed toward Rose.
“You're my uncle.””
Marcus nodded.
“Technically.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“You threatened Grandma.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
He pointed toward Arthur.
“He did.””
Arthur shook his head.
“You're lying.””
Marcus laughed softly.
“You forged the documents.””
“You forced me.””
“I gave you a choice.””
“You threatened my family.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
“And he stole from yours.””
Maya stood between them.
“Where is Grandma's money?””
Marcus's smile disappeared.
“Most of it is gone.””
“Where?””
Arthur looked at him.
“Don't.””
Marcus continued.
“Your father paid me with it.””
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“How much?””
“Sixty-two thousand from Rose.””
Arthur whispered, “Stop.””
“Forty thousand from Maya.””
Maya's face hardened.
“And the eighteen thousand?””
Marcus looked at Arthur.
“That was supposed to be the final payment.””
Maya stared at her father.
“You gave him my money.””
Arthur nodded.
“I was trying to buy time.””
“You sold me out.””
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
Marcus smiled.
“You see? That's always his excuse.””
Maya looked at Thomas.
“What happens now?””
Thomas placed the original trust document in front of her.
“Now you decide.””
“Decide what?””
“The trust gives you authority if your grandmother is incapacitated or if fraud is discovered.””
Maya stared at the document.
Rose reached for her hand.
“Do what you believe is right.””
Maya looked at Arthur.
He was crying silently.
For the first time, he looked less like her father and more like a frightened stranger.
She thought about the kitchen table.
Her empty savings account.
The hospital receipts.
Every dollar she'd sacrificed.
Then she looked at Rose.
Her grandmother had spent years trusting the wrong person.
Maya picked up her phone.
Arthur looked at her.
“What are you doing?””
She dialed.
“Calling the police.””
Arthur's face collapsed.
“Maya, please.””
She shook her head.
“You should have asked me for help.””
“I was ashamed.””
“You should have told the truth.””
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
She looked at Rose.
“And I still didn't steal from you.””
Arthur lowered his head.
Marcus turned toward the door.
Thomas stepped in front of him.
“Don't.””
Marcus stopped.
“You think you're going to arrest me?””
“No.””
Thomas smiled faintly.
“You're already surrounded.””
Marcus looked toward the windows.
Outside, red and blue lights flashed across the glass.
Maya hadn't noticed them arriving.
Jordan whispered, “They're here.””
Marcus's expression finally changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Arthur sank into the chair.
Rose stood beside Maya.
The front door opened.
Officers entered.
Marcus raised his hands.
Arthur did the same.
Maya watched as her father was led away.
He stopped beside her.
“I love you.””
Maya's eyes filled.
“I love you too.””
Arthur looked hopeful.
Then she added:
“But loving you doesn't mean protecting your lies.””
His face crumpled.
He was taken outside.
Maya returned to the coffee table.
The hospital receipts were still there.
She picked up the first one.
For months, she had believed those numbers represented everything she had lost.
Now they represented something else.
The moment she finally stopped paying for someone else's betrayal.
Rose placed a hand on her shoulder.
“What will you do now?””
Maya looked at the trust papers.
Then at the hospital receipt.
“I'll get your money back.””
Rose smiled through her tears.
“And yours.””
Maya nodded.
Jordan stood beside them.
For the first time that night, the living room felt warm again.
Not because the lamps were glowing.
Because nobody was lying anymore.
Maya folded the hospital receipt and placed it inside the trust folder.
At the top of the page, beneath the names of everyone who had betrayed them, was one final line from her grandfather's letter.
She read it again.
*Money can be replaced. Trust cannot. So when the truth finally arrives, choose it—even when it hurts.*
Maya looked at Rose.
Then Jordan.
And finally at the empty chair where Arthur had been sitting.
The money was gone.
May you like
The family had been shattered.
But the truth was finally theirs.
