Chapter 9: The Missing Page

Thomas stepped inside.

Arthur didn't move.

Maya closed the door behind him.

Rose stared at the elderly man as if she were seeing a ghost.

“I thought you were dead.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Arthur wanted everyone to believe that.””

Arthur's voice cracked.

“That isn't true.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You told Elena I had died.””

Maya's eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Thomas placed his leather briefcase on the coffee table.

“Because I discovered what your father had done.””

Arthur shook his head.

“You don't know the whole story.””

“I know enough.””

Thomas opened the briefcase.

Inside were folders.

Dozens of them.

Maya looked at the labels.

Her name.

Rose's name.

Arthur's name.

And one folder marked:

*JOHNSON FAMILY TRUST — CONFIDENTIAL*

Rose sat down.

“My husband had a trust?””

Thomas nodded.

“He created it six months before he died.””

Arthur looked at the folder.

“That wasn't supposed to be opened.””

Thomas gave him a cold look.

“You were never supposed to touch it.””

Maya stepped forward.

“What was in the trust?””

Thomas removed a document.

“Your grandfather placed two hundred thousand dollars into it.””

Maya stared.

“The inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“And he named Grandma?””

Thomas nodded.

“Rose was the primary beneficiary.””

Maya looked at Arthur.

“What about me?””

Thomas held up another page.

“You were the secondary beneficiary.””

Arthur's face tightened.

“That trust was never funded.””

Thomas slowly shook his head.

“It was.””

Arthur went silent.

Thomas placed the document on the table.

“Your grandfather transferred the money three days before his death.””

Rose covered her mouth.

“Then why did Arthur tell me the money was in investments?””

“Because he emptied the trust.””

Arthur whispered, “I was going to replace it.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Eleven years.””

Arthur's eyes dropped.

“You had eleven years.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Why did Grandpa put me in the trust?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Because he was worried about your father.””

Arthur's head lifted.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“He had already noticed irregularities in Arthur's business accounts.””

Rose looked at Arthur.

“You were stealing before he died?””

“No.””

Thomas corrected him.

“Not stealing.””

Arthur looked relieved.

Thomas finished:

“Borrowing without permission.””

Arthur's relief vanished.

Maya shook her head.

“What's the difference?””

“There isn't much when you never pay it back.””

Thomas pulled another document from the folder.

“This is the original trust agreement.””

Maya scanned it.

There were signatures.

Dates.

Notarization.

Everything looked official.

Then Thomas turned to the last page.

“There is one condition.””

Maya read it.

Her eyes widened.

“What does this mean?””

Thomas leaned closer.

“Your grandfather suspected Arthur might try to access the funds.””

“So he protected them?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Thomas pointed to the bottom of the page.

“If the trust was ever accessed without Rose's written consent, the entire account would become subject to an independent audit.””

Jordan frowned.

“An audit?””

Thomas nodded.

“And criminal referral if fraud was discovered.””

Arthur's face went white.

Maya looked at him.

“You knew.””

Arthur shook his head.

“I didn't know that part.””

Thomas stared at him.

“You read the trust.””

“I was angry.””

“You read every page.””

Arthur said nothing.

Rose's voice trembled.

“Then why did you tell me there was no money?””

Arthur looked at her.

“Because I needed it.””

“You needed my husband's money?””

“I needed to survive.””

Rose shook her head.

“You had a family.””

“I was trying to protect it.””

Maya stepped between them.

“You keep using that word.””

Arthur looked at her.

“Because it's true.””

“No.””

Maya's voice was steady.

“You protected yourself.””

Arthur's eyes filled.

“And everyone else paid for it.””

Thomas nodded.

“She is right.””

Arthur glared at him.

“Stay out of this.””

Thomas's expression didn't change.

“I stayed out of it for eleven years.””

He opened another folder.

“I'm not staying out anymore.””

Inside were bank records.

Loan documents.

Copies of signatures.

Transfer confirmations.

Maya's name appeared again and again.

She picked up one document.

“This says I authorized a transfer.””

Thomas nodded.

“You didn't.””

“No.””

“This signature…”

“Was forged.””

Maya looked at Arthur.

He shook his head.

“I didn't forge that.””

Thomas said, “No.””

Maya looked surprised.

“You didn't?””

“No.””

Arthur stared at Thomas.

“Then who did?””

Thomas placed another document on the table.

“This is why I came.””

Maya looked down.

The page showed an authorization for a transfer of *$40,000*.

The signature was hers.

But the date was eleven years earlier.

She frowned.

“That can't be possible.””

“You were a child.””

“I was eleven.””

Thomas nodded.

“You couldn't legally authorize it.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Then who signed?””

Thomas looked at Arthur.

Arthur looked terrified.

Maya turned toward him.

“Dad?””

Arthur backed away.

“I didn't.””

Thomas reached into the briefcase.

“I have the original.””

He placed a second page beside the first.

Maya stared at it.

The signature on the original was different.

So was the handwriting.

Thomas tapped the bottom.

“Your grandfather left a second authorized signer.””

Rose whispered, “Who?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Someone you trusted.””

Maya's heart pounded.

“Who?””

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned the page over.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Maya read it.

*If Arthur ever tries to access the trust, give the documents to Maya. She is the only person I know he will never suspect.*

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“Grandpa wrote this?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two days before he died.””

Arthur's breathing became shallow.

Thomas looked at him.

“And there was one more thing.””

He removed a sealed envelope.

The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

*FOR MAYA — OPEN ONLY IF ARTHUR HAS FAILED.*

Maya stared at it.

Her grandfather had written her name.

Eleven years ago.

She reached for the envelope.

Arthur suddenly shouted:

“Don't open that!””

Maya froze.

Thomas looked at Arthur.

“Why not?””

Arthur's face was drained of color.

“Because…”

He swallowed.

“Because that letter will tell her why I really took the money.””

Maya slowly looked at him.

“Why?””

Arthur said nothing.

Thomas placed the envelope in Maya's hand.

She broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Her eyes moved across the first line.

Then stopped.

Her lips parted.

“Grandpa knew…”

Jordan stepped closer.

“What?””

Maya looked up at Arthur.

Tears ran down her cheeks.

“He knew you were going to betray Grandma.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

But Maya kept reading.

May you like

And the final sentence made her hands begin to shake.

*I didn't leave the money for Rose because I trusted Arthur. I left it because I knew the truth about what happened to—*
