Chapter 4: The Message on Her Phone

That night, nobody slept.

Not really.

How could we?

The house that had always felt like my sanctuary suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Every hallway held a memory.

Every picture on the wall felt like a question.

There was the photo from our wedding day.

Vanessa smiling in her white dress.

Me looking at her like she was the only person in the world.

There was the picture from Noah’s birth.

Vanessa crying.

Me holding her hand.

A perfect family.

That was the image we showed everyone.

But I was starting to understand something.

A picture can capture a moment.

It cannot prove the truth.

I sat in Noah’s room while he slept.

The moonlight came through the window, covering his little crib in a soft glow.

I watched him breathe.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

I had never been so grateful for something so simple.

A breath.

A heartbeat.

A second chance.

Maria had saved him.

And I still couldn’t stop thinking about how close I came to accusing her.

That would stay with me forever.

Around midnight, Vanessa walked into the room.

She looked exhausted.

“I made tea.””

I didn’t answer.

She placed the cup on the dresser.

“I know you hate me right now.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

That was the truth.

Because hate would have been easier.

Hate meant there was distance.

But this was my wife.

The mother of my child.

The person I built a life with.

And she had done something I never believed she was capable of.

“I need to know everything,” I said.

She nodded.

“I’ll tell you.””

“Start with the messages.””

She sat down.

“They started about two months ago.””

“Two months?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes dropped.

“Because I was embarrassed.””

“Embarrassed?””

“They knew things about me.””

“What things?””

She pulled out her phone.

Her hands shook as she unlocked it.

“There was an unknown number.””

She opened the messages.

I took the phone.

The first message was simple.

You don’t deserve the life you have.

I scrolled.

The next one said:

People know who you really are.

Then:

Your husband will leave when he finds out.

My eyes narrowed.

“What did they mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She took a deep breath.

“I made mistakes before I met you.””

I looked at her.

“What kind of mistakes?””

She looked away.

“Not criminal. Just… things I’m not proud of.””

That wasn’t enough.

“You need to be more specific.””

She hesitated.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Before you, I was engaged.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Yes.””

“You never told me that.””

“I know.””

“How long were you engaged?””

“Six months.””

“And what happened?””

Her face changed.

“He died.””

The room went silent.

I didn’t know what to say.

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

“How?””

She looked down.

“Car accident.””

I waited.

But something told me that wasn’t the whole story.

“What does this have to do with the messages?””

She grabbed her phone back.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You’re telling me someone is threatening you about something from years ago, and you don’t know why?””

“I swear.””

I believed she was scared.

But I didn’t know if I believed everything she said.

That was the worst part.

Trust doesn’t break all at once.

Sometimes it breaks in pieces.

A crack here.

A question there.

Until one day you realize the whole thing has fallen apart.

I stood up.

“Who was he?””

“His name was Marcus.””

“Do you have any family photos? Anything?””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“Why?””

“Because if someone is threatening you, I need to understand what we’re dealing with.””

She nodded slowly.

“I deleted most things.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to forget.””

I walked out of Noah’s room.

But as I passed the hallway table, I stopped.

There was something sitting there.

A small envelope.

I picked it up.

My name was written on the front.

Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

I looked at my wife.

Her face went pale.

“I don’t know what that is.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a man I had never seen before.

Marcus.

On the back, there were four handwritten words.

Ask your wife what really happened.

I looked up.

And for the first time that night, I realized something.

May you like

Maybe Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.

Maybe someone else had been waiting for the perfect moment to destroy our family.
