Chapter 6: The Truth Buried Years Ago

I spent the next three days living between two worlds.

During the day, I was a father.

I made Noah breakfast.

I changed diapers.

I played on the floor while he laughed and knocked over his toys.

I held him tighter than ever.

At night, I was a detective.

I searched.

I questioned.

I tried to understand how the woman I loved became someone capable of making such a dangerous choice.

Vanessa stayed in the guest room.

Not because I told her to.

Because neither of us knew how to be near each other anymore.

The silence between us was louder than any argument.

On the fourth day, I found something.

I was looking through old public records connected to Marcus.

At first, I expected to find nothing.

A normal man.

A normal accident.

A sad story that ended years ago.

But Marcus wasn’t as simple as Vanessa made him sound.

His full name was Marcus Bell.

He worked in finance.

He had no criminal history.

No major problems.

But there was one thing that stood out.

A business partnership.

With Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

Business partnership?

She never mentioned that.

I kept digging.

Before Marcus died, he and Vanessa owned a small investment company together.

It wasn’t huge.

But it was successful.

Then Marcus died.

And six months later, Vanessa met me.

I leaned back.

Something felt wrong.

I waited until Vanessa came home.

“We need to talk.””

She looked at my face and immediately knew.

“What did you find?””

I turned my laptop around.

Her expression changed.

The second she saw Marcus’s name beside hers, she looked away.

“You told me you were just engaged.””

“I was.””

“You were business partners.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it didn’t matter anymore.””

“It matters when someone is threatening you.””

She sat down.

“I didn’t want that part of my life following me.””

“Following you?””

She laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was exhausted.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“Marcus and I built that company together.””

“And?””

“And when we broke up, he wanted everything.””

“Everything?””

“He said I owed him.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For leaving.””

The room went quiet.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I made a decision that hurt him.””

“What decision?””

She hesitated.

Then finally said:

“I moved money.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“Not stolen.””

“Then what?””

“I transferred my share before we separated.””

I stared at her.

“Without telling him?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“Vanessa.””

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I was.””

She stood up.

“You don’t know what it feels like to be trapped with someone who won’t accept that it’s over.””

I understood fear.

I understood feeling trapped.

But I also understood choices.

“And after that?””

“Marcus found out.””

“What happened?””

“He confronted me.””

“Then?””

She looked at the floor.

“That night was the last time I saw him alive.””

The room went cold.

“Vanessa.””

“I didn’t kill him.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

“But you’re thinking it.””

I hated that she was right.

Because the thought had crossed my mind.

Not because I wanted it to.

Because too many things didn’t fit.

A dead fiancé.

Hidden money.

Threatening messages.

A woman who had just endangered her own child.

I didn’t know who Vanessa was anymore.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, she picked up.

“Hello?””

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Where did you get this number?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

She ended the call.

Her hands were trembling.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“They know.””

“Who?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The person who sent the picture.””

“What do they know?””

She looked toward Noah’s room.

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“They know what happened the night Marcus died.””
