Chapter 6: The Evidence Hidden for Years
The second envelope sat on the table between us.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed.
Even the guests who had been whispering moments before were silent.
Patricia stared at it like she was looking at a ghost.
Marcus noticed.
“Why are you scared of a piece of paper?””
Patricia forced a laugh.
“I’m not.””
But her voice betrayed her.
The attorney looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, are you sure you want this opened here?””
I looked around the ballroom.
At the ruined wedding.
At the people who had humiliated me.
At my son standing between the woman who raised him and the woman who gave birth to him.
“Yes.””
The attorney nodded.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of an old property agreement.
Not the current deed.
The original one.
Marcus leaned forward.
“What is that?””
The attorney looked at him.
“This property was connected to your biological mother before anyone else.””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
She nodded.
“I owned part of it.””
Patricia immediately spoke.
“That’s impossible.””
The attorney turned toward her.
“No, Ms. Walker. What’s impossible is pretending records disappear because someone wants them to.””
A murmur moved through the guests.
Patricia’s jaw tightened.
“Be careful.””
The attorney calmly replied.
“I am always careful.””
He placed the document down.
“Especially when dealing with fraud.””
That word hit the room.
Fraud.
Brielle looked at her mother.
“Mom?””
Patricia ignored her.
“This is ridiculous.””
I looked at her.
“Is it?””
She stared back.
“You think you’ve won?””
I shook my head.
“I’m not trying to win.””
I looked at Marcus.
“I’m trying to make sure my son finally knows the truth.””
Marcus stood silently.
Too much information was crashing into him at once.
His wedding.
His wife.
His mother.
His childhood.
Everything he believed was shifting.
He looked at Danielle.
“Why didn’t you fight harder?””
Danielle’s eyes filled.
“I did.””
“Then why wasn’t I with you?””
She looked down.
“Because Patricia made sure nobody believed me.””
Patricia crossed her arms.
“Don’t make yourself a victim.””
Danielle looked at her.
“You told everyone I abandoned my child.””
Marcus froze.
The words landed.
“I was told you left.””
Danielle nodded.
“I know.””
“I hated you.””
Her face broke.
“I know.””
Marcus looked away.
“I spent years thinking my own mother didn’t want me.””
Danielle whispered:
“I wanted you every single day.””
That was the moment Marcus finally looked at her differently.
Not as a stranger.
Not as a woman from a forgotten past.
As his mother.
Brielle stepped forward.
“This is too much.””
Marcus turned.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew enough.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect us.””
“Protect us from what?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence was the answer.
I watched Marcus understand something painful.
Brielle had not just hidden a secret.
She had chosen it.
He looked at her wedding ring.
Then slowly removed it.
Brielle’s face changed.
“Marcus.””
“I need space.””
“You can’t do this.””
He looked at her.
“You slapped my mother.””
She froze.
“You lied to me.””
Silence.
“And now I’m finding out you knew my mother was alive.””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know who I married.””
Brielle’s anger returned.
“You’re choosing them over me?””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I’m choosing the truth over you.””
Patricia stepped forward.
“You ungrateful boy.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus stared.
“Excuse me?””
Patricia realized her mistake.
But it was too late.
“You’ve spent your whole life being protected,” she continued.
“You have no idea what your mother was really like.””
Danielle looked hurt.
“Patricia.””
“No.””
Patricia’s calm mask cracked.
“You don’t get to come back after all these years and pretend you’re innocent.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What happened?””
Patricia stayed silent.
Then she smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You want the truth?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at Danielle.
“Fine.””
The room waited.
Patricia took a breath.
“Danielle wasn’t the only person who wanted that property.””
Danielle’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Patricia continued.
“She had something hidden there.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Patricia looked at me.
Then at the deed.
“Something Evelyn still doesn’t know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Patricia smiled.
For the first time all night, she looked confident again.
“You thought the deed was the secret.””
She stepped closer.
“It isn’t.””
Marcus stared.
“Then what is?””
Patricia looked directly at Danielle.
May you like
And said:
“The reason she disappeared.””
