Chapter 7: The Lie Behind the Disappearance
The room felt colder.
Even though the ballroom lights were still bright.
Even though the flowers were still beautiful.
Something about Patricia’s words changed the air.
The reason she disappeared.
Marcus looked at Danielle.
His expression was no longer only hurt.
It was confusion.
And doubt.
The most dangerous emotion of all.
“Mom?””
Danielle closed her eyes.
I saw the pain on her face.
Not the pain of being accused.
The pain of knowing she couldn’t escape the past anymore.
“Marcus…”
“Tell me.””
She looked at him.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
“When you were old enough.””
He laughed quietly.
“Old enough?””
His voice cracked.
“I was thirty years old when I found out you existed outside the stories they told me.””
Danielle looked down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Marcus, listen.””
But he raised his hand.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on Danielle.
“I need to hear it from her.””
Danielle nodded.
She deserved that.
“I disappeared because Patricia threatened to take you away.””
Marcus froze.
Patricia immediately laughed.
“That’s a lie.””
Danielle continued.
“She told me if I fought, she would make sure nobody believed me.””
Marcus looked at Patricia.
“Why?””
Patricia’s face hardened.
“Because I knew what Danielle was.””
“What does that mean?””
Patricia looked around.
Then pointed toward Danielle.
“She was unstable.””
Danielle’s eyes filled with anger.
“You know that isn’t true.””
“You were struggling.””
“I was a new mother.””
“You were emotional.””
“You used that against me.””
Marcus stepped back.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Stop talking like I’m not standing here.””
His voice was shaking.
“You’re both talking about my life.””
Nobody spoke.
He looked at Patricia.
“You told me she abandoned me.””
Patricia remained silent.
“You told me she didn’t want me.””
Silence.
“Was that a lie?””
Patricia looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus closed his eyes.
A tear escaped.
He wiped it away quickly.
I had never seen my son cry.
Not when his father left.
Not when he struggled.
Not ever.
And now he was breaking in front of everyone.
I wanted to hold him.
But I stayed still.
Because he needed to feel this.
He needed to own his pain.
Brielle approached him.
“Marcus.””
He stepped away.
“No.””
She stopped.
“You were part of this.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She didn’t answer.
“Of losing the house?””
Her silence confirmed it.
Marcus looked disgusted.
“The house.””
He laughed softly.
“All of this was about a house?””
Patricia shook her head.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the deed.
“That property contains something valuable.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Patricia smiled.
“You really don’t know.””
My heart sank.
“No.””
She looked pleased.
“Evelyn, you bought a property without knowing everything attached to it.””
The attorney stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Patricia looked at him.
“Is it?””
She turned toward me.
“Ask yourself why Danielle fought so hard to get that property back.””
Danielle’s expression changed.
Because Patricia was touching something real.
Not a lie.
A secret.
Marcus noticed.
“Mom?””
Danielle looked at him.
“I was trying to protect something.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
Then at the deed.
“There was a safety deposit key.””
Nobody moved.
“A key?””
Danielle nodded.
“Hidden with the original documents.””
The attorney frowned.
“The bank records?””
“Yes.””
Patricia’s smile disappeared.
Because she knew exactly what Danielle meant.
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
Patricia said nothing.
“You knew there was something hidden.””
She looked away.
Marcus turned toward Brielle.
“And you?””
Brielle’s face fell.
“I only knew my mother wanted the property.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
He stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
She started crying.
Real tears.
But after everything, nobody moved.
The attorney picked up the deed.
“There is one thing we need to confirm.””
“What?””
He looked at Danielle.
“The original owner.””
Danielle nodded.
Then looked at me.
“I never transferred the property.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
The attorney studied the documents.
“Mrs. Carter…”
He stopped.
“What?””
He looked at Marcus.
Then at Danielle.
“The deed Evelyn received may not have been the complete record.””
Silence.
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
The attorney turned the page.
“There may have been another legal owner.””
Patricia suddenly stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
The attorney raised an eyebrow.
“You seem very certain.””
Patricia realized her mistake.
Too late.
Marcus noticed.
“Why do you know so much?””
Patricia didn’t answer.
Then the ballroom lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
The venue manager rushed inside.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He held a small envelope.
“This was just delivered.””
My name was written on the front.
But the handwriting wasn’t familiar.
The manager looked nervous.
“It says it’s urgent.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
One sentence.
My hands went cold.
Because the person who wrote it knew everything.

The message said:
*“Evelyn, if you want to know who really owns the house, ask your son what happened the night he was born.””*
