Chapter 4: The Ashford Family Lie

Harper couldn’t move.

The words stayed in the room.

You should never have found out who Derek really was.

Not because they sounded threatening.

Because they sounded like a warning.

She looked at Eleanor.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked into the hidden room and closed the door behind her.

The woman who had spent the entire evening trying to make Harper feel small now looked like she was carrying something too heavy to hold.

Gabriel stepped between them.

“Mom.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“You think knowing the truth will make everything better.””

Gabriel’s voice hardened.

“No. I think lying made everything worse.””

The words hurt.

Harper could see that.

Because Eleanor’s expression changed for a second.

Like she wanted to defend herself.

Then she stopped.

Victor looked at his wife.

“Tell them.””

Eleanor stared at him.

“You’re really going to do this?””

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then Eleanor sat down.

“I met Derek Lawson twenty years ago.””

Harper listened carefully.

“He wasn’t a detective then.””

Gabriel frowned.

“What was he?””

Eleanor looked at the photograph.

“He was a witness.””

“To what?”” Harper asked.

Eleanor hesitated.

“To something that almost destroyed this family.””

Victor crossed his arms.

“Don’t make it sound like you had no choice.””

Eleanor looked at him sharply.

“And don’t pretend you were innocent.””

The accusation changed the room.

Harper looked between them.

She had expected secrets.

She had not expected both of them to be guilty.

Gabriel looked frustrated.

“What happened?””

Eleanor took a deep breath.

“Years ago, before you were old enough to understand, your father was involved in a situation that put the entire company at risk.””

Victor’s face tightened.

“That’s not what happened.””

Eleanor ignored him.

“Derek knew about it.””

Harper’s voice was quiet.

“What situation?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Victor said:

“A robbery.””

Harper looked at him.

“A robbery?””

Victor nodded.

“An attack on one of our facilities.””

Gabriel frowned.

“I never heard about this.””

“Because we buried it,” Eleanor said.

The honesty shocked him.

Harper felt a chill.

“Why?””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Because the person responsible was never caught.””

The room became silent.

“And Derek knew who it was.””

Gabriel stared.

“Are you saying Derek protected a criminal?””

“No.””

Eleanor looked down.

“I’m saying Derek protected a secret.””

Harper thought about all the times Derek disappeared.

All the phone calls he took outside.

All the names he refused to explain.

A horrible realization formed.

“What did Derek want from me?””

Victor looked at her.

“That’s the question.””

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“He didn’t marry Harper because of the Ashfords.””

His voice became certain.

“He actually loved her.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody knew if that was true.

And Harper hated that she wanted it to be.

She hated that a part of her still hoped there had been something real.

Eleanor noticed.

“You need to stop protecting him.””

Harper looked at her.

“You don’t get to say that.””

The room went quiet.

Harper stood taller.

“You don’t get to tell me who Derek was. You don’t get to act like you’re the only person who was hurt by him.””

Eleanor looked away.

Harper continued.

“I lost my home. My marriage. My entire sense of reality.””

Her voice shook.

“But I am not going to stand here and let everyone use my pain to solve their family problem.””

Gabriel watched her.

And for the first time that night, he saw something different.

Not fear.

Strength.

Victor nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor walked toward a locked drawer.

“Which is why you need to see this.””

He opened it.

Inside was a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Harper stared.

“What is it?””

Victor handed it to her.

“Something Derek left behind.””

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

And a note.

Only one sentence was written.

Harper read it silently.

Then her face changed.

Gabriel noticed.

“What does it say?””

She looked up.

Her voice barely came out.

“It says…”

She swallowed.

“‘If anything happens to me, ask Eleanor why she let me take the fall.’”

Nobody moved.

May you like

Victor looked at Eleanor.

And Eleanor Ashford looked like she had just seen a ghost.
