Chapter 9: The Last Secret
The room stayed dark for three seconds.
But three seconds was long enough for everyone to become someone different.
Fear changed people.
It stripped away manners.
It removed titles.
It showed what was underneath.
Harper held her phone tightly, staring at Derek’s message.
I know who betrayed us.
And she’s standing in the room with you.
Her eyes moved slowly around the room.
Victor.
Gabriel.
Eleanor.
The three people who had controlled the truth all night.
One of them had betrayed Derek.
One of them had destroyed the Ashford family.
One of them had helped create the nightmare Harper had lived through.
Then the lights came back on.
Nobody moved.
Gabriel looked at his phone.
“Everyone got it?””
Victor nodded.
“Yes.””
Eleanor looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Terrified.
Harper noticed.
And that scared her more than anything.
Because Eleanor had spent the entire night fighting to protect herself.
But now?
Now she looked like someone who knew the truth was finally coming.
Gabriel turned toward his mother.
“Is it you?””
The question was painful.
A son asking his mother if she destroyed their family.
Eleanor opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then she whispered:
“No.””
Gabriel looked away.
“I don’t know if I believe you.””
Harper understood.
Trust was fragile.
Once broken, even the truth sounded like another lie.
Victor walked toward the center of the room.
“Everyone stays here.””
Gabriel looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Derek wants us divided.””
Harper shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the message.
“He doesn’t.””
Victor frowned.
“What?””
Harper looked up.
“Derek doesn’t want us divided.””
She thought about the man she married.
The man who was cruel.
The man who lied.
The man who hurt her.
But also the man who left warnings instead of threats.
“The whole time, Derek wanted someone to know the truth.””
Gabriel watched her carefully.
“You’re defending him.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“I’m finally seeing him clearly.””
Nobody spoke.
Harper continued.
“He wasn’t trying to destroy this family.””
She looked at Victor.
“He was trying to expose something.””
Victor’s expression changed.
Because he knew she was right.
Then Eleanor sat down.
“I need to tell you everything.””
Gabriel looked at her.
“You should have done that hours ago.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know.””
For the first time, Eleanor Ashford looked like a woman instead of a powerful figure.
“I introduced Harper and Derek because Derek asked me to.””
Harper nodded slowly.
“I knew it.””
Eleanor looked at her.
“But I didn’t know why.””
“Why did he ask?””
Eleanor looked at the floor.
“Because he needed someone outside the Ashford family.””
Victor frowned.
“Eleanor.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t get to silence me anymore.””
The room went quiet.
“I found out years ago that Thomas didn’t die because of a random attack.””
Gabriel stepped closer.
“What are you saying?””
Eleanor looked at her son.
“Thomas was killed because he found evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
She swallowed.
“Evidence that someone inside the company was working with criminals.””
Harper’s stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Eleanor looked at Victor.
And this time, she wasn’t afraid.
She was disappointed.
“Your father knew.””
Gabriel froze.
Victor’s face changed.
“Eleanor.””
“You knew Thomas was in danger.””
Harper looked at Victor.
“Is that true?””
Victor didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
Gabriel stepped away.
“No.””
Victor looked at him.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“All these years, you let us believe Derek was the problem.””
Victor’s voice lowered.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Victor looked at his son.
“From the truth.””
Harper felt anger rise.
Because that was the excuse powerful people always used.
Protection.
As if hiding pain made it disappear.
As if secrets were kindness.
A sound came from downstairs.
Everyone stopped.
A door opening.
Victor immediately moved.
“Stay here.””
Gabriel followed.
“No.””
The two men left the room.
Harper and Eleanor remained with Lily.
The child was asleep now, exhausted from fear.
Harper looked at Eleanor.
“Did Derek ever love me?””
The question surprised Eleanor.
Because after everything, that was what Harper needed to know.
Eleanor looked at her.
“Yes.””
One word.
No hesitation.
“He did.””
Harper looked away.
“Then why did he hurt me?””
Eleanor’s face softened.
“Because sometimes people become so focused on surviving that they destroy the things they were trying to protect.””
Harper hated that answer.
Because it sounded too much like forgiveness.
And she wasn’t ready to forgive Derek.
Not yet.
A moment later, Gabriel rushed back into the room.
His face was pale.
“Dad found something.””
Harper stood.
“What?””
Gabriel looked at Eleanor.
“He found Derek.””
Everyone froze.
“Where?””
Gabriel looked toward the hallway.
“In the old Mercer Street records room.””
Harper’s heart raced.
“He’s alive?””
May you like
Gabriel nodded.
“But he’s not alone.””
