Chapter 10: The Name He Was Given
Malik turned the wedding ring beneath the light.
The engraving was tiny, but unmistakable.
*NOT YOUR FIRST NAME, SON.*
He looked at Evelyn.
“What does that mean?””
She didn't answer.
“Mom.””
Her shoulders shook.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“After the wedding.””
Malik laughed bitterly.
“Apparently that's when everyone tells me the truth.””
He pulled the ring from his finger.
“Take it.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“What?””
“Tell me what it means.””
She looked toward the altar.
Then toward Marcus.
Then finally at Malik.
“Your name wasn't always Malik.””
The room went silent.
Malik stared.
“What was it?””
Evelyn whispered,
“Samuel.””
Malik stopped breathing.
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“That's why your father changed the records.””
Malik looked at him.
“You're saying I'm Samuel?””
“Yes.””
Malik shook his head.
“That isn't possible.””
Evelyn cried harder.
“When you were born, there were two boys.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“The first baby was yours.””
Malik stared at the picture.
“Mine?””
“Yes.””
“The second was…”
“Your twin.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Mine.””
Malik looked at him.
The room seemed to tilt.
“So Samuel was never my brother?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Malik looked at Tiana.
She was crying silently.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I found out six months ago.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know how.””
“You knew my name was Samuel.””
“I knew there was a man named Samuel Carter who believed he was your brother.””
Malik frowned.
“Then who is Samuel Carter?””
Marcus answered.
“The other baby.””
Malik stared.
“But you said the first baby was mine.””
“The records were switched,” Evelyn said.
She wiped her cheeks.
“Your father wanted Marcus's child gone. But when the nurse discovered there were twins, she made a different choice.””
Malik looked toward the hospital records.
“The nurse switched us.””
Evelyn nodded.
“She gave Marcus's son to another family.””
“And gave me to you.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“She gave you to your father.””
Malik froze.
“What?””
“Your father took you home and called you Malik. He told everyone the other baby had died.””
Marcus looked down.
“I spent thirty years believing my son was dead.””
Malik stared at Evelyn.
“And you believed I was dead too?””
“For three days.””
She closed her eyes.
“Then I found out you were alive.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father threatened to take you away.””
Malik's jaw tightened.
“So you let me grow up thinking he was my father.””
“He raised you.””
“He lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him.””
Evelyn lowered her head.
“Yes.””
Malik looked at the wedding guests.
Then at the empty altar.
His wedding day had begun with flowers, music, and promises.
Now every promise he'd ever heard sounded different.
He turned toward Tiana.
“And Marcus?””
She nodded.
“He found you?””
“Years ago.””
Marcus spoke quietly.
“I recognized you the first time I saw you.””
Malik stared.
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
“When?””
“When you were born.””
Malik's eyes widened.
“You saw me?””
Marcus nodded.
“I saw both babies.””
“Then why didn't you take me?””
“I tried.””
Evelyn whispered, “Your father had security watching me.””
Marcus looked at Malik.
“I was twenty-one. I had no money. No power. Your father had both.””
Malik looked at the photograph again.
“And Samuel?””
Marcus's face softened.
“I found him six months ago.””
Malik's heart pounded.
“Where?””
“Here.””
The answer stunned him.
“He was living twenty minutes from this church?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't he come to me?””
“Because he thought you were the one who had abandoned him.””
Malik closed his eyes.
Tiana stepped closer.
“He didn't know you were his twin.””
Malik opened his eyes.
“How did you know?””
“Because I met him first.””
She swallowed.
“He showed me the records. He showed me the photograph. He asked me to find out whether you knew anything about him.””
“And you did.””
“Yes.””
“What happened next?””
“I fell in love with you.””
Malik looked away.
“And you kept investigating.””
“I was trying to make sure he was safe.””
“You married Jordan.””
Tiana nodded.
“Jordan was helping me.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“I forged the marriage certificate because Marcus was threatening to expose Samuel's location.””
Marcus frowned.
“I never threatened her.””
“You told her you'd take the baby.””
“My baby.””
Jordan shook his head.
“You scared her.””
“I wanted my child.””
Tiana stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a shaky breath.
“I lied to everyone.””
Her voice trembled.
“But I didn't lie because I wanted money or another man.””
She looked at Malik.
“I was trying to protect Samuel.””
Malik's eyes softened slightly.
“Where is he?””
The officer stepped forward.
“We found him.””
Malik turned.
“Where?””
“He's outside.””
The wedding doors opened.
A man stood there.
Hospital gown.
Bruise beneath one eye.
Same eyes as Malik.
Same jaw.
Same unmistakable face.
Malik couldn't move.
The man looked at him.
Neither spoke.
Then Samuel smiled through tears.
“Hey, brother.””
Malik's chest tightened.
He walked forward.
One step.
Then another.
Samuel opened his arms.
Malik embraced him.
The hug broke something inside him.
Thirty years of lies.
Thirty years of missing memories.
Thirty years of believing he was an only child.
Samuel held him tightly.
“I thought you forgot me.””
Malik shook his head.
“I never knew you existed.””
“I know.””
They pulled apart.
Malik looked at him.
“You're really Samuel?””
Samuel laughed through tears.
“Apparently.””
Malik smiled for the first time that day.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
She stood alone beside the altar.
Malik walked toward her.
She couldn't meet his eyes.
“I am sorry,” she whispered.
He stopped in front of her.
“I believe you were scared.””
She looked up.
“But?””
“But being scared doesn't erase what happened.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Malik glanced toward Samuel.
“You should have told me.””
“I should have.””
“Years ago.””
“I know.””
He took a breath.
“I don't know if I can forgive you today.””
Evelyn nodded.
“You don't have to.””
Malik turned toward Tiana.
She stood beside the altar, tears streaking her face.
He looked at the white flowers.
At the abandoned vows.
At the ring in his palm.
Then he placed the ring on the altar.
“Tiana.””
She looked up.
“I loved you.””
Her face crumpled.
“I loved you too.””
“But I can't marry someone who made me discover my entire life was a lie on the day she promised me forever.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
Malik turned toward Samuel.
His brother smiled.
“What now?””
Malik looked around at the guests.
The flowers.
The chairs.
The ruined ceremony.
Then he smiled faintly.
“Now?””
He put an arm around Samuel.
“Now I meet my brother.””
Samuel laughed.
“And after that?””
Malik looked at Evelyn.
“After that, we find every record they buried.””
Evelyn nodded through her tears.
Marcus stood beside her.
For the first time, nobody was hiding.
Malik walked toward the open doors with Samuel beside him.
Behind them, the wedding remained untouched.
The flowers were still white.
The floor was still polished.
The daylight was still warm.
But the marriage would never happen.
Because the man who walked into that church believing he was Malik Brooks walked out knowing something far more important:
He had never been the son his father wanted him to be.
May you like
He had been the son his mother had spent thirty years trying to protect.
And beside him walked the brother everyone had spent thirty years pretending was dead.
