Chapter 3: The Man at the Door
The knock echoed through the wedding ceremony.
Malik stood in the center aisle, still holding the marriage certificate.
Tiana remained beside the altar, one hand gripping her clutch so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.
Nobody moved.
Then the officiant looked toward Malik.
“Should I ask security to—”
“No,” Malik said.
His voice was low.
“Leave the doors closed.””
Tiana exhaled shakily.
“Thank you.””
Malik turned.
“Don't thank me.””
She stopped.
He lifted the certificate.
“Tell me who is on this paper.””
Tiana stared at the document.
“I can't.””
“You can.””
“I won't.””
Malik stepped closer.
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You hid a marriage.””
“I know.””
“You brought me here today and expected me to marry you.””
Tears rolled down Tiana’s cheeks.
“I love you.””
“That doesn't answer me.””
“I was trying to protect us.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Protect him from what?””
Tiana turned toward her.
“From the truth.””
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“The truth doesn't need protection.””
Another knock came from the doors.
Louder.
Tiana jumped.
Malik noticed.
“You know who's outside.””
“No.””
“You're lying again.””
“I don't know.””
“You just told me not to open the door.””
“Because I'm afraid.””
“Of him?””
Tiana said nothing.
Malik looked at Evelyn.
“What happened three months ago?””
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“I can't tell you.””
Malik stared at her.
“Why not?””
“Because that is something Tiana needs to say.””
Tiana whispered, “I can't.””
“Then I will.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“You made a choice.””
Tiana’s tears fell faster.
“And you think I don't regret it?””
“What choice?””
Tiana looked at Malik.
Her lips trembled.
“I married someone.””
“I know that.””
“You don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
“I thought it was the only way.””
“The only way to do what?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Malik looked down at the certificate.
The spouse’s name was still there.
Covered.
Waiting.
He moved his thumb slightly.
Tiana suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Don't.””
Malik looked at her fingers around his wrist.
“Why?””
“Because once you see it, everything changes.””
“It already changed.””
“No.””
She shook her head desperately.
“You don't know how bad it is.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Let him see.””
Tiana looked at her with disbelief.
“You said you wouldn't tell him.””
“I said I wouldn't tell him your secret.””
Evelyn pointed toward the door.
“But whoever is outside isn't your secret anymore.””
The room went silent.
Malik slowly pulled his hand free.
Then the wedding doors opened.
A gust of warm air moved through the ceremony.
Every guest turned.
A Black man stood in the doorway.
Late thirties.
Dark suit.
No flowers.
No invitation.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
Tiana made a small sound.
“No…”
Malik watched her face.
Not the stranger.
Her.
He saw recognition.
Fear.
And something else.
Guilt.
The man stepped inside.
The doors closed behind him.
He looked at Malik.
Then at Evelyn.
Finally, his eyes settled on Tiana.
“Tiana,” he said.
She covered her mouth.
Malik raised the certificate.
“Who are you?””
The man didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the paper.
A faint smile crossed his face.
“You really thought you could get married today?””
Malik’s entire body stiffened.
Tiana whispered, “Don't.””
The man took another step.
“I came to make sure he found out.””
Malik looked down at the certificate.
His thumb covered only one thing now.
The husband’s name.
Slowly, deliberately, he moved it away.
The name appeared.
Malik’s eyes widened.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
She was already crying.
May you like
And the stranger said quietly,
“Now you know why your mother tried to stop this wedding.””
