Chapter 10: The Stranger in the Black Car
“Lily, sweetheart, I need you to tell me exactly what you saw.””
I crouched in front of my daughter beside the playground swing. The photocopied authorization shook in my hand, but I forced my voice to remain calm.
Lily glanced toward the parking lot.
“The man had a scar,” she whispered.
“Like the man in the video.””
“Did you see his face clearly?””
She nodded.
“He was wearing a dark coat. Grandma gave him an envelope. He said something, and then Grandma started crying.””
“What did he say?””
Lily frowned, trying to remember.
“He said, ‘You promised you'd never tell him.’”
My stomach tightened.
“Did Grandma see you watching?””
“I don't think so. I was behind the bushes.””
I pulled her into a hug.
“You did the right thing by telling me. But from now on, if a stranger approaches you or asks you to keep a secret, you come straight to me or your teacher. Okay?””
“Even if Grandma tells me not to?””
The question cut straight through me.
“Even then.””
I called Rebecca and explained what Lily had seen. She instructed me to preserve the photocopy, avoid confronting my mother alone, and report the suspicious encounter to the authorities.
Then I called Eleanor.
She answered after the fourth ring.
“Daniel?””
“Where are you?””
“At home. Why?””
“Who did you meet in the parking lot?””
Silence.
“Mom, Lily saw you handing an envelope to a man in a black car. She heard him say you promised never to tell me.””
My mother began breathing unevenly.
“Daniel, please. I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
“I didn't know he would approach Lily.””
“Who was he?””
Another silence.
“His name is Thomas Bell.””
The name hit me like a punch.
The former hospital records administrator.
The man whose access logs were connected to the altered birth records.
“What did you give him?””
“Copies of the documents.””
“Why?””
“He said he could help us establish what really happened to Rachel's embryos.””
“By taking evidence away from our lawyer?””
“He said Rebecca couldn't be trusted.””
“Who told you that?””
“Thomas.””
I closed my eyes.
“Mom, Thomas Bell is connected to the altered records. He's not someone you should be giving documents to.””
“I didn't know that when I first contacted him.””
“When did you contact him?””
“Three days ago.””
Three days.
Before the hotel party.
Before the necklace.
Before I knew Vanessa had planted evidence on Lily.
My mother had been investigating something behind my back while pretending to have no answers.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid you would blame me.””
“You were right.””
She started crying.
I wanted to comfort her. I wanted to believe she had finally made a mistake out of fear rather than calculation.
But Lily was standing beside me, listening to every word.
I couldn't afford to let my mother's guilt become another burden my daughter had to carry.
“Stay home,” I told Eleanor.
“Don't contact Thomas again. Rebecca will arrange for you to give a statement.””
“Daniel, please. He's not the villain you think he is.””
“You don't know what I think.””
“He told me the original records were deliberately altered. He said he could prove Vanessa wasn't responsible.””
I froze.
“Who was?””
My mother whispered, “He said Rachel's family ordered the transfer.””
Then the call disconnected.
I immediately tried calling her back.
No answer.
A second later, Rebecca called.
“Daniel, we have a serious problem. Thomas Bell's company reported a break-in at its records office. Several archived files have disappeared.””
“Did they identify the suspect?””
“They're reviewing security footage. But there's something else. Bell has submitted an affidavit claiming that the embryo transfer was authorized by Rachel's father.””
“That's impossible. Rachel's father died before she gave birth.””
“Exactly.””
I looked at the photocopy in my hand.
The authorization carried my mother's signature.
Someone had been manufacturing a paper trail designed to make every person involved look guilty.
And the only person who appeared to benefit was Vanessa.
“Rebecca,” I said, “find Thomas Bell. I want to know who he really works for.””
“I'm already on it.””
“And keep Lily's name out of every public filing until we can secure the records.””
“Understood.””
I hung up and took Lily's hand.
“We're going somewhere safe.””
“Are we going to Grandma's?””
“Not tonight.””
She looked down.
“Is Grandma a bad person?””
I struggled to find an answer that wouldn't wound her further.
“Grandma has made some choices that hurt people. That doesn't mean you have to decide everything about her right now.””
Lily nodded.
Then she asked the question I'd been dreading.
“Is Mommy Vanessa a bad person?””
I thought of the necklace in Lily's purse. The humiliation beneath the ballroom chandeliers. The forged documents. The threats.
“I think Vanessa has done things that were very wrong,” I said.
“And until we know she can be trusted, we're going to keep our distance.””
Lily squeezed my hand.
“Good.””
Her voice was small, but there was steel beneath it.
“She scares me.””
I stopped walking.
For four years, I'd told myself Vanessa's strictness was love, her jealousy was insecurity, and her need for control was simply the price of being married to a successful woman.
My daughter had understood something I'd refused to see.
I knelt and kissed her forehead.
“You never have to be alone with someone who scares you. Not even family.””
Two hours later, Rebecca called with an update.
Thomas Bell had been found.
He was dead.
His car had been discovered in an underground parking garage outside Boston. The initial report suggested a medical emergency, but investigators had found the stolen archive files in the trunk.
One file was missing.
The original embryo-transfer authorization.
I sat in the hotel room Rebecca had arranged for Lily and me, staring at the wall.
“Do they know who he met before he died?””
“Not yet,” she replied.
“But the garage cameras captured a woman entering the elevator shortly before he was found.””
“Vanessa?””
“We can't confirm that from the footage. The woman was wearing a hat and sunglasses.””
I rubbed my face.
“Can they track the car?””
“It's registered to a company with no listed employees. The company's registered agent is a law firm that has represented Vanessa in the past.””
I felt a cold certainty settle over me.
“She's still moving pieces around the board.””
“Yes. And Daniel, you need to be careful. If someone is willing to kill to obtain these records, this is no longer just a custody dispute.””
I looked toward the bed.
Lily was asleep with her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.
I lowered my voice.
“What about my mother?””
“She's safe for now. But I need her to tell us everything she knows about the authorization.””
“I'll make sure she does.””
After the call ended, I checked the door locks and drew the curtains.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
You should have stopped digging when I asked you to.
A second message followed.
I can still make this easy for you.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed Rachel standing outside a fertility clinic, visibly pregnant, with a man beside her whose face had been deliberately scratched out.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
The day before Lily was conceived.
May you like
And beneath it was a sentence that turned my blood to ice.
*Rachel knew whose embryo she was carrying. She simply never told you.*
