The Necklace in Her Bag / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Woman Who Signed the Last Order

The words on the paper followed me into the courthouse the next morning.

The person who changed the discharge order was not Vanessa.

I had spent years believing the worst thing Vanessa had done was marry me while hiding her obsession with Lily's biological identity.

Then came the forged necklace accusation.

The false paternity report.

The stolen records.

The threats.

The altered medical chart.

Now there was evidence that someone else had been involved from the beginning.

Someone who had helped determine where my daughter would go after Rachel died.

Someone who might have used Vanessa's obsession to conceal a different crime.

Rebecca had filed an emergency motion to prevent Vanessa from using the disputed records to seek custody. The judge had agreed to review the matter that morning.

Vanessa arrived at the courthouse wearing a cream-colored suit and carrying a leather folder.

She looked composed.

She even smiled when she saw me.

"Daniel," she said softly.

"I'm glad you came to your senses.""

I didn't answer.

Her attorney approached Rebecca.

"We're prepared to demonstrate that our client has a biological relationship with the child and that the original placement was based on inaccurate information.""

Rebecca handed him a copy of the forensic report.

"The documents you intend to rely on are under investigation for suspected forgery and unauthorized alteration.""

His smile faded.

"We haven't been notified of any formal findings.""

"Then perhaps you should read the report before making claims about parentage.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You can't keep Lily from me forever.""

I looked directly at her.

"Watch me protect her.""

Her expression hardened.

"You still think this is about a necklace?""

"No. I think it's about a woman who was willing to destroy a little girl's sense of safety to get what she wanted.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"I gave that child everything.""

"You gave her a house. You gave her clothes. You gave her toys. Then you planted a necklace in her purse and watched her cry in front of a ballroom full of strangers.""

"I made a mistake.""

"You planned it.""

For the first time, she had no immediate answer.

Rebecca touched my arm.

"We need to go inside.""

The hearing lasted nearly three hours.

Vanessa's attorney argued that the disputed fertility records established a possible biological connection and that my mother had signed documents acknowledging the transfer.

Rebecca countered with the forged guardianship agreement, the altered birth registration, the suspicious medication order, and Rachel's handwritten letter.

The judge listened without interruption.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Ms. Reed, are you claiming that the child was knowingly placed with you by her biological mother?""

Vanessa straightened.

"Yes, Your Honor.""

"Do you have a signed document from Rachel Bennett establishing that agreement?""

"I have a statement from the attending physician.""

Rebecca rose.

"Your Honor, that statement has been identified by the physician as a forgery.""

Vanessa's attorney objected.

The judge raised a hand.

"I've reviewed the preliminary evidence. I'm not making a final determination about parentage today. However, I am concerned by the apparent alteration of medical and legal records.""

He ordered both parties to preserve all relevant documents and prohibited Vanessa from attempting to remove Lily from my care while the investigation continued.

It wasn't a final victory.

But it was enough to breathe again.

As we left the courtroom, Vanessa caught up with me near the elevators.

"You think you've won," she said.

"I think Lily gets to sleep in her own bed tonight.""

She gripped the strap of her handbag.

"You don't know what you're protecting her from.""

"Then tell me.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

For one brief moment, I saw something beneath the anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

"You should ask Eleanor why she was in Rachel's hospital room when the monitors stopped recording.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

Vanessa stepped into the elevator.

"Ask her.""

The doors closed.

I stood motionless until Rebecca touched my shoulder.

"Daniel?""

I turned toward her.

"We need to go back to my mother's house.""

Eleanor was sitting at the kitchen table when we arrived.

She looked up as I entered.

One glance at my face told her that Vanessa had said something.

"What happened?""

"Why were you in Rachel's hospital room when the monitors stopped recording?""

My mother went pale.

"Where did you hear that?""

"Answer me.""

She lowered her eyes.

"I went in to see Rachel.""

"When?""

"That night.""

"Before or after the medication change?""

She pressed her hands together.

"After.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't understand what had happened.""

"Then explain it now.""

Eleanor took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa told me Rachel wanted to speak with me. She said Rachel had asked for privacy because she wanted to discuss Lily's future.""

"Did you go into the room?""

"Yes.""

"Was Rachel conscious?""

My mother nodded slowly.

"She was frightened. She asked me to promise that you would raise Lily, no matter what happened.""

My throat tightened.

"Did you promise?""

"Yes.""

"Then what happened?""

Eleanor began crying.

"Rachel asked me whether Vanessa had been telling the truth about the embryo. I told her I didn't know. She said someone had been changing her medical records and that she was afraid Vanessa would take the baby.""

I leaned against the counter.

"What did you do?""

"I told her I would protect Lily.""

"And then?""

My mother covered her face.

"An alarm sounded. Rachel began struggling to breathe. I ran into the corridor and called for help.""

"Did you touch anything in the room?""

"No.""

"Did you alter the monitor?""

"No!""

Her voice cracked.

I believed she was telling the truth about that much.

But there was still a gap in the story.

"What happened after the doctors arrived?""

"They told me to leave. I waited outside. Later, Vanessa came out and said Rachel had died.""

Rebecca sat across from my mother.

"Did you see anyone else enter the room?""

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"A nurse. She wasn't wearing the usual uniform. She had a hospital identification badge clipped to her pocket.""

"Do you remember her name?""

"No. But I remember the badge.""

"Why?""

"Because it was upside down. I couldn't read the name, but I saw the photograph. The woman looked familiar.""

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Familiar from where?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"From Vanessa's office.""

The kitchen went silent.

"Vanessa employed a private nurse?"" I asked.

"I don't know. I saw the woman at Vanessa's house once. She was carrying medical supplies.""

Rebecca wrote something in her notebook.

"Did you tell the police?""

"No. Vanessa said the hospital had investigated Rachel's death and found no wrongdoing. She told me that if I raised questions, I could lose access to Lily.""

I stared at my mother.

"She used my daughter to silence you.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

For the first time, I understood the full shape of Vanessa's control.

She had never needed to hold a weapon against anyone.

She had simply made everyone believe that speaking would cost them the person they loved most.

Rebecca called the investigator handling Rachel's death.

Within an hour, we learned that the hospital's original staffing records had been recovered from an off-site archive.

One temporary nurse had been assigned to the delivery unit that night.

Her name was *Mara Collins*.

She had left the hospital two weeks after Rachel's death.

Her employment file listed Vanessa Reed as her emergency contact.

And her last known address was a private medical residence outside Boston.

Rebecca arranged an interview through the investigator.

We arrived at the residence shortly before sunset.

Mara Collins was in her late forties, with short gray hair and a face that looked permanently tired.

When she saw the hospital records in Rebecca's hand, she closed the door halfway.

"I have nothing to say.""

Rebecca held up her credentials.

"We're investigating possible medical-record tampering and a suspicious death. You may be able to help establish what happened.""

Mara's eyes moved toward me.

"You're Daniel Hayes.""

"Yes.""

She looked away.

"I knew your wife.""

"Then tell me what happened to her.""

Mara's fingers tightened around the door.

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa said she'd destroy my family if I talked.""

I stepped closer.

"She's already destroyed mine.""

Mara looked at me for a long moment.

Then she opened the door.

Inside, she sat at a small kitchen table and folded her hands.

"I didn't change Rachel's medication," she said.

"But I saw someone else do it.""

Rebecca opened her notebook.

"Who?""

Mara swallowed.

"The hospital's records contractor came into the unit that night. He said he was checking an emergency order.""

"Thomas Bell?""

She nodded.

"He had a doctor's login and a printed authorization. He entered the medication station while Dr. Morris was attending to Rachel.""

My heart pounded.

"Did you see him change the order?""

"I saw him enter the dosage. When I asked what he was doing, he told me to mind my own business.""

"Why didn't you report him?""

"Because the next morning, Vanessa showed me a photograph of my son leaving school. She told me accidents happened when people interfered in family matters.""

Rebecca's expression hardened.

"Did you keep any evidence?""

Mara stood and went to a drawer.

She returned with a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of the medication station, taken from the corridor. Thomas Bell was visible at the terminal.

Beside him stood another person.

A woman wearing a dark coat.

Her face was partially obscured, but the reflection in the glass cabinet showed her clearly.

My mother gasped.

"That's not Vanessa.""

Rebecca enlarged the image.

The woman was holding a hospital badge.

And around her wrist was a distinctive gold bracelet.

I recognized it immediately.

I'd seen it in the hotel security footage.

I'd seen it in the photograph of Rachel outside the fertility clinic.

The bracelet belonged to Vanessa's older sister, *Catherine Reed*.

But Catherine had died twelve years earlier.

I looked at Rebecca.

"How is that possible?""

Mara's voice trembled.

"Because Catherine Reed isn't dead.""

May you like

She pointed to the woman in the photograph.

"She's the person who signed the discharge order.""
