The Necklace She Never Stole / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Message on the Screen

I stared at the message on Vanessa's phone.

The bright bedroom suddenly felt smaller, though nothing in it had changed. The white pillows were still scattered across the bed. The gold jewelry box sat on the dresser. Maya stood behind me, holding the hem of my polo in both hands.

But the room no longer felt like a place where I understood the people inside it.

“Who sent that?”” I asked.

Vanessa turned the phone toward herself.

“I don't know.””

“Let me see the number.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than her answer.

“Vanessa.””

“Fine.””

She unlocked the phone and held it out, but kept two fingers wrapped around its edge as if she might snatch it back.

The message came from an unlisted number. No contact name. No photograph. Just the warning and a timestamp from less than a minute earlier.

I looked up.

“Did you receive this before or after you came back into the bedroom?””

“After.””

“Then who were you talking to in the hallway?””

Her face hardened.

“I was answering a message.””

“From whom?””

“I just told you I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe a stranger sent you a message about a recorder hidden under my daughter's pillow?””

Vanessa pulled the phone away.

“I expect you to understand that someone is trying to make me look guilty.””

“You already look guilty.””

She recoiled as if I'd slapped her.

Maya shifted behind me.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

“I'm right here.””

“Can we go somewhere else?””

The question broke through my anger. Maya wasn't asking me to solve the mystery. She was asking to get away from the person who had frightened her.

I took her hand.

“Yes, sweetheart. We can.””

Vanessa stepped into our path.

“Don't take her anywhere.””

I stopped.

“Move.””

“You are not going to walk out of this room with her and turn her against me.””

“No one has to turn her against you. She heard what you said.””

“That recording is incomplete!””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

I waited.

She glanced at Maya and pressed her lips together.

Finally, she said, “I was angry. I said something I shouldn't have said. That doesn't mean I planted a necklace in her room.””

“Did you?””

“No!””

Her answer came so loudly that Maya began crying again.

I lowered my voice.

“Then why did you tell someone to put the necklace in her room?””

Vanessa's shoulders rose with a frustrated breath.

“You heard a few words without context. You don't know what we were discussing.””

“Who is we?””

She looked at the recorder.

“I won't discuss private conversations with a device that your daughter stole.””

“She didn't steal it.””

“How do you know?””

“Because she told me where she found it, and I have no reason to think she's lying.””

Vanessa gave a short, bitter laugh.

“That's convenient.””

I moved around her, guiding Maya toward the doorway.

This time, Vanessa didn't block us.

Instead, she followed us with her eyes and spoke in a voice so controlled it made the words even more disturbing.

“Marcus, once you start pulling at this thread, you won't like what comes loose.””

I turned back.

“Is that a threat?””

“It's a warning.””

“About what?””

She said nothing.

I led Maya a few steps into the hallway, stopping just outside the bedroom. I could still see Vanessa clearly through the open doorway. She stood beside the dresser, her phone gripped in one hand, her other hand resting on the closed jewelry box.

The sunlight followed us into the hallway. There was nowhere for anyone to hide from the conversation.

I crouched beside my daughter.

“I'm going to ask you one more thing. You can tell me the truth, even if you think it might make somebody angry.””

Maya wiped her face.

“Okay.””

“When you found the recorder, did you hear Vanessa speaking to the person on that recording?””

She looked toward the bedroom.

“Yes.””

“Did you recognize the other voice?””

Her lips trembled.

“I think so.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Who do you think it was?””

Maya stared at the floor for several seconds.

“I don't know if I'm allowed to say.””

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

“Sweetheart, nobody gets to tell you that you aren't allowed to tell your daddy the truth.””

She looked up at me.

“But Vanessa said you wouldn't believe me if I told you.””

“I believe you.””

Maya opened her mouth.

Before she could speak, Vanessa called from the bedroom.

“Maya, don't you dare!””

My daughter immediately went silent.

I stood.

“Don't speak to her.””

Vanessa came toward the doorway, her heels striking the polished floor.

“You have no idea what she is about to accuse someone of.””

“Then let her talk.””

“No. You need to understand something first.””

She raised her phone.

“That message wasn't sent by a stranger. Whoever sent it knows what happened in this house. They know about the necklace.

They know about the recorder. And they know what is on it.””

I watched her carefully.

“Then why didn't you show me the message immediately?””

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She lowered the phone.

“From the truth.””

The words hung between us.

I thought of the second voice on the recording. The person who had asked what would happen if I found out. The person who had questioned whether Maya would be involved.

Someone had known about the plan before it happened.

Someone had helped Vanessa, or at least knew enough to understand what she intended to do.

And now that the recorder had surfaced, that person was frightened.

I looked down at Maya.

“Baby, you said you thought you recognized the voice. Did that person ever speak to you?””

Maya nodded.

“Sometimes.””

“Here in the house?””

“Yes.””

“Did they tell you to keep secrets?””

She hesitated, then nodded again.

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Maya, stop.””

I stepped toward my wife.

“One more word to her, and this conversation is over.””

Vanessa's nostrils flared. She took a step back, then deliberately placed her phone on the dresser inside the bedroom.

“You want the truth?”” she said.

“Fine. Listen to the last recording.””

“I already did.””

“No. You heard the one she wanted you to hear.””

My grip tightened around the recorder.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa walked to the bed and lifted the edge of the mattress with both hands. She reached beneath it and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

Maya gasped.

I stared at the paper.

Vanessa unfolded it slowly.

It was a printed photograph of the gold necklace.

Beneath the image, someone had written six words in black ink:

*Put it where the little girl sleeps.*

For the first time since I had entered the bedroom, Vanessa looked genuinely shaken.

“I didn't write that,” she whispered.

I took the paper from her.

“Then who did?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I turned it over. There was nothing on the back except a faint indentation, as though someone had written on another sheet of paper above it.

Maya tugged at my hand.

“Daddy, that's not all.””

I looked at her.

“What else?””

She glanced at Vanessa, then at the recorder.

“The person who told Vanessa to hide the necklace…”

Her voice broke.

I knelt beside her.

“Go on, sweetheart.””

Maya swallowed hard.

“I heard them say they wanted you to leave me.””

The words struck me with such force that, for a moment, I couldn't respond.

Vanessa went completely still.

I slowly turned toward her.

“Who wanted me to leave my daughter?””

She stared at the photograph in my hand.

Then the phone on the dresser vibrated.

A new message appeared on the screen.

Vanessa looked at it and whispered, “Oh, God.””

I crossed the room and picked up the phone.

The message contained a single sentence.

*If Marcus has heard the recording, tell him where the necklace really is.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where is it?””

She shook her head, tears suddenly gathering in her eyes.

“I swear I don't know.””

The phone vibrated again.

This time, the message was shorter.

*Check the recorder's final file.*

I stared at the little black device in my hand.

Three recordings had appeared in its menu earlier.

But now, beneath them, a fourth file had appeared—one with a timestamp only seconds old.

I pressed play.

A familiar voice emerged from the speaker.

Not Vanessa's.

Not Maya's.

A voice I had trusted for years.

“Once the necklace is found, Marcus will have no choice but to believe us.””

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because I knew exactly who had said it.

And that person was supposed to be on our side.
