Chapter 8: Someone Was Already Inside
I moved before I had time to think.
"Maya, into the office. Now.""
She rushed toward me, and I guided her behind the desk, away from the doorway. I kept my phone in one hand and the recorder in the other.
Vanessa stood frozen near the cabinet.
"Marcus, what is it?""
I showed her the message.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
"Oh, God.""
"Don't touch anything. Don't go anywhere.""
I stepped into the hallway, keeping Maya within sight through the open office door.
The front door downstairs stood ajar.
A thin line of daylight stretched across the entryway floor.
I listened.
No footsteps. No voices.
Then I heard a soft click from the living room.
Someone was inside my house.
I called out.
"Who's there?""
Silence.
I didn't move farther into the hallway. Instead, I pulled my daughter closer to the office doorway and called the police again, reporting the threatening message and the open door.
The dispatcher instructed me to remain somewhere secure and avoid confronting anyone.
I intended to follow that advice.
Then a voice came from downstairs.
"Marcus?""
My stomach tightened.
It was Renee.
"Marcus, I need to talk to you.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head frantically, mouthing the word no.
I kept my voice steady.
"Stay where you are, Renee. The police are coming.""
A pause followed.
Then my sister laughed softly.
"You called the police on your own sister?""
"You threatened my daughter.""
"I didn't send you that message.""
"Then why are you here?""
"I came to explain.""
"Explain from downstairs.""
Another silence.
Then I heard the unmistakable sound of heels climbing the stairs.
I stepped into the hallway and held up my phone.
"Stop right there.""
Renee appeared at the top of the staircase.
She had changed nothing about her appearance. Her dark curls were neat, her cream-colored handbag rested against her hip, and her expression carried the same familiar look of offended patience she had worn when we were children and I accused her of breaking something.
"Marcus, please," she said.
"Let me explain.""
"Don't come any closer.""
She stopped.
Her eyes moved toward the office.
"Where's Maya?""
"Safe.""
"Good. I need to speak with her.""
"No.""
Renee sighed.
"You don't understand what you've uncovered.""
"I understand that you stole from my family and helped Vanessa frame my daughter.""
"Vanessa has told you whatever she needs to tell you to save herself.""
From behind me, Vanessa called out.
"Don't you dare put this on me!""
Renee looked past my shoulder.
"You were supposed to keep him away from the accounts.""
Vanessa stepped into view.
"I didn't know how far you'd gone!""
"You knew enough.""
"I didn't know about the transfers!""
Renee's face hardened.
"Then you should have kept your mouth shut.""
The casual cruelty in her voice made me angrier than any denial could have.
I stepped forward.
"That's enough.""
Renee looked at me, and for the first time, I saw the person behind the family smile.
She wasn't embarrassed.
She was irritated that we had discovered her secret.
"Marcus, your first wife was a suspicious woman," she said.
"She thought everyone was stealing from her. She spent months accusing people who had done nothing wrong.""
"She left a letter warning me about you.""
"Of course she did.""
"She knew about the missing money.""
Renee's eyes flickered.
Only briefly.
But I saw it.
"How much did you take?"" I asked.
She lifted her chin.
"That money was supposed to be recovered.""
"Recovered from whom?""
"From the people who had been hiding it.""
"Whose people?""
Renee said nothing.
I held up the photograph of her and my late wife.
"She trusted you.""
"She trusted too easily.""
The words came out so coldly that I almost didn't recognize my sister's voice.
Maya appeared in the office doorway behind Vanessa.
"Aunt Renee?""
Renee's expression softened instantly.
"There you are, sweetheart.""
Maya remained where she was.
"Why did you tell Vanessa to blame me?""
Renee stared at her for a moment.
Then she knelt slightly, lowering herself toward Maya.
"Baby, grown-up problems are complicated.""
"You said Daddy would send me away.""
"I never wanted you hurt.""
"But you did hurt me.""
Renee's smile faltered.
Maya wiped her cheeks.
"You made me think Daddy wouldn't believe me.""
Renee looked at me.
"You see? This is exactly what I was trying to prevent. She's too attached to you. She thinks every disagreement is a betrayal.""
I felt something inside me settle into absolute certainty.
There was no explanation coming that could make this woman safe for my daughter.
"You need to leave," I said.
Renee straightened.
"Not until I get what's mine.""
I stared at her.
"What do you think is yours?""
"The documents.""
"Which documents?""
"The envelope from the cabinet.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"You came here for the missing letter?""
"I came here to retrieve something that doesn't belong to you.""
"My wife's letter belongs to me.""
"Not that one.""
The statement hung in the hallway.
I looked down at the paper in my hand.
Renee knew exactly what was written in it.
She knew what had been taken from the cabinet.
And she knew there was something else we hadn't found.
"What did my wife leave behind?"" I asked.
Renee's expression tightened.
"Give me the envelope, Marcus.""
"No.""
She took one step toward me.
I raised my phone.
"The police are on their way.""
"Then you'll have to explain why you have stolen financial records in your possession.""
"They're records from my own accounts.""
"Some of them aren't.""
I stared at her.
Renee reached into her handbag and pulled out a thin folder.
She opened it and held up a printed document.
"Your wife signed this before she died.""
I couldn't make out the details from where I stood.
"What is it?""
"A declaration.""
"About what?""
"About who would manage Maya's inheritance if something happened to you.""
My chest tightened.
"Give it to me.""
Renee shook her head.
"Not until you listen.""
I looked toward the office.
Maya was watching us, her small hands pressed against her chest.
"Whatever you want to say, say it now.""
Renee took a breath.
"Your wife didn't trust you to protect Maya's money.""
I stared at her.
"That's a lie.""
"She believed you could be manipulated. She thought you would trust the wrong person, and she was right.""
She held the document higher.
"She named someone else to oversee the trust.""
"Who?""
Renee's eyes locked onto mine.
"Me.""
For a moment, the hallway seemed to tilt.
"You expect me to believe my wife gave you control over Maya's inheritance?""
"She signed the document herself.""
"Then why hide it?""
"Because you would never have accepted it.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at Renee as though she had never seen her before.
"Did you know about this?"" I asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Renee smiled bitterly.
"Of course she didn't. Vanessa was never supposed to know about the trust.""
"Then why involve her in the necklace?""
"Because I needed you to stop looking at the accounts long enough for me to recover the original documents.""
"By framing my daughter?""
"I needed a distraction!""
The words exploded through the hallway.
Renee seemed to realize what she'd admitted. She lowered the folder, but it was too late.
I had heard her.
Vanessa had heard her.
And Maya had heard her.
I took a step toward my sister.
"You used my child as a distraction.""
Renee's face twisted.
"I was protecting this family!""
"No. You were protecting yourself.""
A siren sounded in the distance.
Renee looked toward the staircase.
Then she looked back at me.
"You think the police can fix this? You don't even know whose money was taken.""
I held up my wife's letter.
"Then tell me.""
Renee's eyes narrowed.
For a second, I thought she might finally confess.
Instead, she pointed toward Vanessa.
"Ask your wife who authorized the original transfer.""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"No!""
Renee smiled.
"Go on, Vanessa. Tell him whose name was on the account.""
I turned toward my wife.
Her face was pale, her eyes fixed on the floor.
"Vanessa?""
She didn't answer.
Renee started toward the stairs.
I moved to block her.
"You're not leaving.""
She looked at me with an expression I would remember for the rest of my life.
"Then you'd better ask her quickly.""
May you like
Her gaze shifted toward Maya.
"Because your daughter isn't the only person in this house who has been keeping secrets.""
