Chapter 7: The Daughter They Tried to Erase

The sentence stayed in the air long after Daniel stopped speaking.

You found the wrong one.

I looked at Grace.

She was standing beside Rebecca, frozen.

A child who had spent her entire life believing she knew who she was.

A child who had walked into our grief and reopened every wound.

A child who was now being told she was not the answer.

Not the daughter we had been searching for.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not because I believed Daniel.

Because he had the nerve to say it.

After eight years.

After all the lies.

After everything.

I walked toward the door.

“Michael.””

Rebecca’s voice stopped me.

I turned.

She shook her head.

Not because she wanted me to ignore him.

Because she was afraid.

I understood.

Fear was everywhere now.

But so was the truth.

I unlocked the door.

Only halfway.

The chain stayed on.

Daniel Cross stood outside.

The same man who had stood beside us at Abigail’s memorial service.

The same man who had hugged me when I collapsed.

The same man who told me, “We’ll find her.””

Now he looked at me like he was the one trying to save me.

“Michael.””

I stared at him.

“Don’t say my name like you’re still my friend.””

His expression changed slightly.

Pain.

Or maybe guilt.

I no longer knew the difference.

Behind him stood two men and a woman.

Not police.

Not officially.

They wore plain clothes.

But their posture told me everything.

They were not here to talk.

Daniel looked past me.

At Grace.

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

“Where is Evelyn?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You break into my life after eight years and that’s your first question?””

His eyes returned to mine.

“You don’t understand what you’ve found.””

“You’re right.””

I leaned closer.

“I don’t.””

My voice lowered.

“But I understand what you did.””

Daniel looked away.

Rebecca stepped beside me.

“You lied to us.””

His jaw tightened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Rebecca’s eyes filled with disbelief.

“Protect us?””

She pointed toward Grace.

“From what?””

Daniel looked at the little girl.

“From this.””

Grace flinched.

I immediately stepped in front of her.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She is not Abigail.””

The words hurt.

Even though I knew they might be true.

Because some part of me had already accepted it.

But hearing it from him felt like another betrayal.

Rebecca whispered:

“Then who is she?””

Daniel looked at Grace.

“Grace Cross.””

Evelyn appeared behind me.

Her face was full of anger.

“Don’t use that name.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“You lost the right to say my name.””

The two siblings stared at each other.

Eight years of secrets between them.

Daniel sighed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

She pointed toward Grace.

“She is a child you abandoned.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“I saved her.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You hid her.””

The argument stopped.

Because everyone felt the same thing.

A truth was coming.

A painful one.

Daniel looked at me.

“Michael, you need to listen.””

I almost refused.

Almost.

But then he said something that made me stop.

“Abigail is alive.””

The room went silent.

Rebecca grabbed the wall.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She is alive.””

My heart slammed against my chest.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

My anger returned.

“You don’t know?””

“I know where she was last seen.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“She was with your daughter.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“She was protecting Grace.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did you tell us she was gone?””

Daniel looked down.

And for the first time, I saw the man I used to know.

A broken man.

“I made a deal.””

Nobody moved.

Rebecca whispered:

“With who?””

Daniel looked toward the people behind him.

“With the people who took them.””

The answer was worse than I expected.

I opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

Daniel looked surprised.

I did not invite him because I trusted him.

I invited him because I needed answers.

He entered slowly.

The others stayed outside.

I noticed.

“You came alone.””

Daniel nodded.

“They don’t know I’m here.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Then why bring them?””

“I didn’t.””

She frowned.

Daniel looked toward the street.

“They followed me.””

A cold silence filled the room.

The enemy was not outside.

The enemy was already close.

I closed the door.

“Explain everything.””

Daniel sat down.

For a moment, he looked older.

Much older.

“I was assigned to Abigail’s case.””

Rebecca laughed painfully.

“We know.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t.””

She stopped.

Daniel continued.

“The night Abigail disappeared, I was not investigating a kidnapping.””

My stomach tightened.

“What were you investigating?””

“A network.””

Evelyn nodded.

“The same one my husband discovered.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Your husband?””

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“My husband was the person who created the original system.””

Rebecca stared.

“You mean Grace’s father?””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“He realized what they were using it for.””

“Tracking families.””

“Yes.””

“Controlling people.””

“Yes.””

“And Abigail?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Abigail accidentally discovered it.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

“She was smart.””

A painful smile crossed his face.

“She found files on a computer.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“She was eight.””

“I know.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“She wasn’t supposed to understand what she saw.””

“But she did.””

“Yes.””

“What did she find?””

Daniel looked at Grace’s necklace.

“She found records.””

“Of what?””

“Children.””

The room became still.

“Children?””

Daniel nodded.

“Children who disappeared.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“The system wasn’t just tracking adults.””

She looked at Grace.

“It was identifying vulnerable families.””

My hands curled into fists.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at Grace.

“Grace was one of them.””

The little girl hugged herself.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Because her father’s work could expose them.””

Grace looked confused.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

Daniel looked heartbroken.

“They made sure you wouldn’t.””

Rebecca held Grace close.

“What did they do to her?””

Daniel did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

The silence was the answer.

“What did they do?””

His eyes closed.

“They separated her memories.””

My body went cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means they convinced her that her past belonged to someone else.””

Grace whispered:

“Abigail.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

A tear rolled down Grace’s face.

“So I’m not her.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But Abigail wanted you to remember.””

Grace touched the necklace.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Abigail knew you would find her.””

I stared.

“Find who?””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the upstairs hallway.

Toward Abigail’s old room.

Then he said:

“Your daughter.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“Where?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small photograph.

Not old.

Not faded.

Recent.

A girl standing outside a building.

May you like

Older.

Sixteen
