Chapter 8: The Night Rebecca Never Spoke About

The message stayed on my phone for exactly seven seconds.

Seven seconds.

That was all.

Then the screen went black.

But it did not matter.

Because I had already read it.

I had already seen the words.

*Ask Mom why she never told you about the night I disappeared.*

For eight years, Rebecca and I had shared every piece of pain.

Every nightmare.

Every empty birthday.

Every holiday where we left one chair untouched.

I thought there were no secrets between us anymore.

I was wrong.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Rebecca was staring at me.

She already knew.

I did not need to say anything.

The guilt on her face answered before her mouth did.

“Rebecca…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Michael, I can explain.””

Those words hurt more than anything else.

Not because they meant she was guilty.

Because they meant there was something to explain.

Evelyn looked between us.

Daniel became silent.

Even Grace seemed to understand that something had changed.

The room that had been filled with impossible truths suddenly held one more.

A secret from the person I trusted most.

I stepped away.

“Tell me.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“Not like this.””

I laughed quietly.

“Not like this?””

My voice cracked.

“Our daughter just called me after eight years.””

Everyone froze.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“You spoke to her?””

I nodded.

“And she told me to ask you why you never told me about the night she disappeared.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

The tears came immediately.

I had seen Rebecca cry hundreds of times.

But this was different.

This was shame.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t protect me from the truth.””

She looked at Grace.

Then at Abigail’s photograph.

Then finally at me.

“There was something I never told you.””

The words felt heavier than anything Daniel or Evelyn had said.

Because this was my wife.

My family.

My home.

“What?””

Rebecca sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“The night Abigail disappeared…”

She stopped.

Like saying the words hurt too much.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“I saw someone.””

The room became silent.

“Who?””

Rebecca swallowed.

“I didn’t know his name then.””

Daniel suddenly looked up.

“What did he look like?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Tall.””

She wiped her tears.

“Dark jacket. A scar near his left eye.””

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Daniel stood.

“Rebecca, are you sure?””

Her face hardened.

“I spent eight years replaying that night in my head. I’m sure.””

Daniel looked away.

“That man wasn’t part of the police.””

“Then who was he?””

Daniel did not answer.

And that scared me.

Because Daniel Cross had spent his entire career pretending he had answers.

But now he looked afraid.

Rebecca continued.

“Abigail woke me up around two in the morning.””

Her voice became distant.

Like she was back there.

In that night.

“She said she heard someone downstairs.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“I told her it was probably nothing.””

Rebecca looked down.

“I was wrong.””

She closed her eyes.

“I went downstairs.””

The room disappeared.

I could see it.

A dark house.

A scared mother.

A little girl waiting upstairs.

“There was a man in the kitchen.””

Rebecca’s voice shook.

“He wasn’t stealing anything.””

“What was he doing?””

“He was looking through papers.””

I frowned.

“Papers?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Your work documents.””

I looked at Daniel.

“My work?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What kind of documents?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“The ones you brought home from the Anderson Foundation.””

My stomach dropped.

The Anderson Foundation.

The nonprofit organization I helped manage years ago.

A project focused on helping missing children.

At least that was what I thought.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“The foundation.””

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“No.””

I looked between them.

“What?””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Michael, what exactly did the foundation collect?””

“Information.””

“About who?””

“Families of missing children.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I suddenly understood.

The system.

The tracking.

The files.

It had been hidden inside something that looked like help.

A charity.

A place meant to protect families.

Used against them.

Rebecca whispered:

“I found out.””

Everyone looked at her.

“The night Abigail disappeared, I found the files.””

She looked at me.

“I found your computer open.””

My heart sank.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She broke.

“Because I thought you were involved.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

I stepped back.

“What?””

Rebecca cried harder.

“I saw Abigail’s name.””

The room went silent.

“I saw files about our daughter.””

“No.””

“I thought…”

She looked at me.

“I thought you knew.””

My voice became quiet.

“You thought I was part of it?””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

A tear fell.

“I thought someone had used your work without you knowing.””

She looked down.

“But then that man came.””

“What did he do?””

“He told me Abigail was in danger.””

Rebecca’s hands trembled.

“He said if I told anyone, they would hurt her.””

“And you believed him?””

She nodded.

“Because he showed me something.””

“What?””

“A video.””

I froze.

“What video?””

Rebecca looked toward Grace.

“A video of Abigail.””

Grace went pale.

“Alive?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Alive.””

My heart broke.

“You saw her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Rebecca covered her face.

“Because he said they were watching us.””

She looked at me.

“He said if I told you, Abigail would disappear forever.””

I closed my eyes.

Eight years.

Eight years of believing we were both victims.

But Rebecca had been carrying this alone.

Not because she wanted to hide it.

Because someone forced her to.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Who was the man?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“The scar.””

She nodded.

“Near his left eye.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Victor.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became darker.

“Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But everyone else reacted.

Evelyn whispered:

“He’s alive?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was the person behind the network.””

Rebecca looked confused.

“Why didn’t you arrest him?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because everyone who tried disappeared.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Grace suddenly stood.

Her breathing became fast.

“No.””

Rebecca moved toward her.

“Grace?””

She pointed toward the photograph of Abigail.

“No, no, I remember.””

Everyone turned.

“What do you remember?””

Grace grabbed her necklace.

“The night.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The night Abigail left.””

I moved closer.

“Grace, what night?””

She looked at me.

“She didn’t disappear.””

Nobody moved.

“She came back.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Grace closed her eyes.

“She came back for me.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“No…”

Grace continued.

“She found me.””

Her voice shook.

“She said my mom was looking for me.””

Evelyn began crying.

“She knew.””

Grace nodded.

“Abigail knew everything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What else do you remember?””

Grace looked at him.

“You.””

Daniel froze.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“You were there.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel’s face changed.

“When?””

Grace looked terrified.

“The night Abigail saved me.””

She pointed at him.

“You told her to run.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Then Grace said the words that changed everything.

“But you weren’t talking to Abigail.””

I felt my heartbeat slow.

“What do you mean?””

Grace looked at Daniel.

“You were talking to someone else.””

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Grace’s eyes filled with tears.

“The man who came after us.””

A pause.

Then:

“The man who had your voice.””

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood.

The scar.

The missing files.

The lies.

The person controlling everything.

Someone had been pretending to be Daniel Cross.

And the real Daniel had been chasing him ever since.

Then the front window shattered.

Everyone screamed.

A figure moved outside.

Daniel grabbed the lights.

“Down!””

The room went dark.

A single object rolled across the floor.

A small recorder.

It clicked on automatically.

A familiar voice filled the room.

Not Daniel.

Not Victor.

Abigail.

“Daddy…”

Everyone froze.

Her voice trembled.

“If you’re hearing this, they found you.””

A pause.

Then:

“Mom, I need you to tell him the truth.””

Rebecca started crying.

The recording continued.

“Tell him what really happened after I came home that night.””

My blood turned cold.

Came home?

Rebecca looked at me.

And whispered:

“Michael…”

Her voice broke.

“I saw Abigail after she disappeared.””

The recorder continued.

“And tell Daddy…”

Static interrupted the message.

Then one final sentence came through.

Clear.

Terrifying.

“Tell him I wasn’t taken.””

May you like

A pause.

“I was hidden.””
