Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Locked Door

Daniel read the message three times.

The words did not change.

*Stop searching for your sister, or the truth about your mother will be the least painful thing you lose.*

The screen glowed in his hand.

A warning.

A threat.

A reminder that someone knew exactly what he was doing.

“Who sent that?””

Victoria’s voice broke the silence.

Daniel looked up.

She was standing several feet away, watching his face carefully.

Too carefully.

He locked his phone.

“Nobody.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

A tiny movement.

A slight tightening around her eyes.

She knew he was lying.

And Daniel noticed that she knew.

“Daniel,” Lena said softly, “what happened?””

He looked at her.

For a moment, he wanted to tell her everything.

But then he remembered the message.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew Lena had returned.

Someone knew the truth was close to coming out.

“It’s nothing,” he said.

Lena frowned.

“That’s the same thing people say when something is definitely not nothing.””

Despite everything happening around them, Daniel almost smiled.

She sounded like someone he had known his entire life.

Like family.

The thought hurt.

Because for twenty years, he had been missing a person who had been missing him too.

Richard stood near the desk, silent.

Daniel turned toward him.

“You need to tell me everything.””

Richard looked tired.

“I told you what I know.””

“No.””

Daniel walked closer.

“You told me what you can admit.””

Richard looked away.

“That’s different.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“And I’m done accepting half-truths.””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Richard sat down.

“When your mother found out about your sister’s records being changed, she confronted your grandfather.””

Daniel listened.

“She threatened to expose him.””

Lena crossed her arms.

“She wanted justice.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“My father had people who worked for him.””

The meaning was clear.

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“You’re saying he tried to silence her.””

Richard didn’t answer.

But he didn’t need to.

Daniel turned away.

All his life, he had admired the Sterling name.

The success.

The wealth.

The power.

Now he saw the price behind it.

“How did she escape?””

Richard looked at Lena.

“Because someone helped her.””

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation immediately caught Daniel’s attention.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the old photograph on the desk.

“Someone inside this family.””

Daniel froze.

“Someone inside?””

Richard nodded.

“Someone your grandfather trusted.””

Lena stepped forward.

“Who?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

The sound of footsteps interrupted him.

Everyone turned.

A security guard appeared at the office door.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“There’s something you need to see.””

Daniel followed him out of the office.

The ballroom had changed.

The guests were still there, but nobody was celebrating anymore.

People whispered in small groups.

Some avoided eye contact.

Others watched Daniel carefully.

The engagement party had become a crime scene of secrets.

The security guard led Daniel to the control room.

Multiple monitors displayed different areas of the mansion.

“Show me.””

The guard pulled up the footage.

“After you asked everyone to stay inside, we checked the exterior cameras.””

Daniel watched.

The screen showed the driveway.

Cars.

Guests.

Security personnel.

Then a figure appeared.

A person wearing a dark coat.

Walking toward the mansion before the party started.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

“We don’t know.””

The figure moved toward the side entrance.

The camera angle changed.

The person entered.

Daniel watched carefully.

Then froze.

Because the person wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from inside the mansion.

Someone who had been there all evening.

“Zoom in.””

The guard did.

The image became clearer.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Victoria appeared behind him.

“What happened?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at the screen.

Then at Victoria.

The woman’s face went pale.

Because she recognized the person too.

“Who is that?”” Daniel asked.

Victoria shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You recognized them.””

Victoria said nothing.

That was enough.

Daniel turned back to the screen.

The figure entered the mansion carrying a small envelope.

Then disappeared into the private hallway.

The hallway leading toward his father’s office.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Who has access to that area?””

Richard didn’t respond.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Who?””

Richard finally answered.

“One person.””

The room became quiet.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward Victoria.

Daniel followed his gaze.

Victoria immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel stared.

“Victoria?””

“I didn’t do anything.””

Nobody accused her yet.

But her reaction had already said too much.

Daniel looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around.

At the cameras.

At Richard.

At Lena.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Not here.””

Daniel laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“You’ve said that all night.””

“Because you don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

Victoria looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Your mother’s disappearance wasn’t just a family secret.””

Daniel waited.

“It involved other people.””

“Who?””

Victoria swallowed.

“The people who helped your grandfather.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“And you?””

Her silence was painful.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You were involved.””

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

Victoria looked at Lena.

“Because she came back.””

Lena flinched.

Daniel immediately noticed.

“Why does Lena scare you?””

Victoria shook her head.

“She doesn’t.””

“Then who does?””

Victoria looked toward the security monitors.

The answer seemed trapped in her throat.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your grandfather wasn’t the only person who wanted Elena Sterling gone.””

Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.

“Who else?””

Victoria looked at him.

“The person who gave me instructions tonight.””

Daniel went still.

“What instructions?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Keep Lena away from you.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at the necklace.

“Because whoever owns that necklace has the proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Victoria whispered:

“That your mother didn’t disappear.””

A silence.

Then:

“She was taken.””

Daniel felt the world shift.

Taken.

Not gone.

Not abandoned.

Taken.

For twenty years, he had lived with the wrong story.

A story carefully built around him.

A story someone wanted him to believe.

“Who gave you the instructions?””

Victoria looked terrified.

“I can’t tell you.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Victoria.””

She shook her head.

“If I say the name, I’m dead.””

The words were quiet.

But everyone heard them.

Lena moved closer to Daniel.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at the office.

At Richard.

At the necklace.

Then she whispered:

“The person who has been protecting the Sterling family’s biggest secret.””

Daniel waited.

Victoria closed her eyes.

And finally said the name.

A name that made Richard Sterling stand up instantly.

A name Daniel had heard his entire life.

A name connected to every important decision his family ever made.

“Your mother’s closest friend.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria shook her head.

“It’s not.””

Her voice trembled.

“Because she never left the Sterling family.””

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“Where is she?””

Victoria looked toward the mansion’s east wing.

The oldest part of the house.

The part Daniel’s father had locked for years.

Then she said:

“She’s been living here the entire time.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Victoria pointed toward the dark hallway.

“The locked room.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in the Sterling family knew the room.

A place no one entered.

A place Richard had forbidden anyone from opening.

A place that had remained sealed for twenty years.

Daniel slowly walked toward the hallway.

Behind him, Richard shouted:

“Daniel, don’t.””

He stopped.

Because his father sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Daniel looked back.

“Why?””

Richard’s face was pale.

“Because if that door opens…”

He swallowed.

“…you’ll finally meet the person who destroyed our family.””

Daniel turned toward the locked door.

His hand reached for the handle.

And from the other side…

someone whispered his name.

“Daniel…”

May you like

His blood turned cold.

Because that voice belonged to someone he had buried in his memory twenty years ago.
