Chapter 9: The Name Written in the Old Letter
Daniel stared at the photograph on his phone.
Someone had taken it from inside the mansion.
Someone close.
Someone watching.
The image showed all of them trapped in the archive room together.
His mother.
His sister.
His father.
His uncle.
A family finally reunited after twenty years of lies.
And someone wanted them to know they were being watched.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“The person who sent this knows we’re here.””
Richard looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Daniel noticed.
“You know something.””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
The word came out colder than Daniel intended.
Richard looked at him.
“I know who has been watching.””
Everyone became silent.
His uncle laughed softly.
“Of course you do.””
Daniel turned.
“You knew?””
His uncle looked amused.
“Your father always knew more than he admitted.””
Richard ignored him.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t get to ask me to listen anymore.””
Richard accepted the anger.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
Daniel looked around the room.
“Everyone says they were protecting me.””
His eyes moved to Elena.
“To her.””
Then Lena.
“To her.””
Then Richard.
“And somehow every person protecting us left us broken.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could deny it.
Daniel held up the phone.
“Who sent this?””
Richard looked at the photograph again.
Then at the old documents spread across the table.
“It was her.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Richard hesitated.
That hesitation was familiar.
Too familiar.
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“Who?””
Richard whispered:
“Amelia Brooks.””
Lena froze.
“My mother?””
Richard nodded.
“No.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked between them.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“The woman who raised you.””
Lena’s face changed.
“My mother raised me.””
Richard looked at her sadly.
“Yes.””
“But you just said Amelia Brooks.””
“I said the person who sent the message was Amelia Brooks.””
Daniel felt confused.
“Explain.””
Richard walked toward the table.
He picked up one of the older photographs.
A picture of Elena.
Amelia.
And two children.
“There were two women involved that night.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“I hoped this day would never come.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom?””
She looked exhausted.
“Amelia was my closest friend.””
Richard nodded.
“She helped Elena escape with Lena.””
Lena looked shocked.
“Then why would she be threatening us?””
Richard looked at the documents.
“Because Amelia changed.””
Daniel stared.
“Changed how?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Power changes people.””
His uncle laughed.
“That’s convenient.””
Everyone turned.
His uncle leaned against the wall.
“You’re blaming Amelia now?””
Richard looked at him.
“You know what she did.””
“Yes.””
His uncle smiled.
“And so do you.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Stop.””
They both went quiet.
He was done watching powerful people speak in riddles.
“I want facts.””
He pointed at the papers.
“No more hidden meanings.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Who is Amelia Brooks?””
Richard answered.
“The woman who helped your mother escape.””
He looked at Lena.
“The woman who raised your sister.””
Then he looked at Daniel.
“And the woman who spent twenty years collecting evidence against this family.””
Lena shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Richard looked at her.
“Your mother trusted her.””
Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.
“She did.””
“Then what happened?””
Elena looked at the floor.
“Amelia believed the only way to defeat the Sterling family was to destroy it completely.””
Daniel frowned.
“So she became the enemy.””
Elena nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
Lena stepped back.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She loved me.””
Her voice cracked.
“She protected me.””
Elena moved toward her.
“I know.””
“Then why would she hurt us?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question everyone feared.
Daniel looked at his uncle.
“You knew Amelia.””
“Yes.””
“Did she work with my grandfather?””
His uncle smiled.
“She worked with everyone.””
The answer made Daniel uncomfortable.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your family was never fighting one enemy.””
He looked at the documents.
“You were fighting a war between people who wanted control.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
Birth records.
Financial agreements.
Letters.
A lifetime of manipulation.
Then he noticed something.
A signature.
On one of the documents.
His uncle’s signature.
And another.
Amelia Brooks.
Daniel picked it up.
“This.””
Everyone looked.
“This document was created after my mother disappeared.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at his uncle.
“And you signed it.””
His uncle didn’t respond.
“What was it?””
Richard’s face changed.
“It was a transfer agreement.””
Daniel looked closer.
The document transferred control of Sterling assets.
Not to his uncle.
Not to Richard.
To Amelia.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“She controlled the company?””
Richard nodded.
“For a short time.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And nobody knew?””
“We thought she was helping.””
His uncle smiled.
“Until she wasn’t.””
Lena looked at Elena.
“Did you know?””
Elena shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought Amelia saved you.””
Lena looked hurt.
“She did.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Lena continued:
“She was the only person who stayed with me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then why would she betray us?””
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The archive room fell silent.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small envelope hidden beneath the documents.
His name was written on it.
Not Daniel Sterling.
Just Daniel.
His hands went still.
“Who put this here?””
Nobody answered.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Amelia.
From Elena.
A letter written years ago.
*My son,*
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
He read silently.
*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally escaped the walls they built around you.*
He continued.
*I need you to understand something. Amelia did not betray me because she wanted power.*
Daniel looked up.
Everyone watched.
He kept reading.
*She betrayed me because she discovered something worse.*
A cold feeling moved through him.
The next sentence changed everything.
*The Sterling family was not the only family involved.*
Daniel looked at Richard.
“What does that mean?””
Richard’s face became pale.
Elena whispered:
“No.””
Daniel continued.
*There was another child.*
The room froze.
Another child?
Lena looked confused.
Daniel’s eyes moved across the letter.
*A child who was hidden before either of you were born.*
He stopped.
“What?””
His uncle suddenly looked serious.
For the first time all night, the man who always seemed in control looked afraid.
Daniel looked at him.
“You know.””
Silence.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You know who this child is.””
His uncle didn’t answer.
“Who?””
The man slowly looked toward Richard.
Then Elena.
Then Lena.
Finally, he looked at Daniel.
And whispered:
“The child your grandfather erased before he erased your sister.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“That’s impossible.””
His uncle shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“Because you’ve already met him.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Who?””
His uncle looked toward the ballroom.
Toward the place where the engagement party had started.
Toward the people who had been celebrating just hours before.
Then he said:
“The person who has been standing beside you all night.””
Daniel’s mind raced.
Victoria?
No.
Richard?
No.
Someone else.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Then he heard footsteps outside the archive room.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Everyone turned.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Because the person standing there was the last person he expected.
And they were holding the original birth records.
May you like
“I think,” the person said quietly,
“it’s time you learned who the real Sterling heir is.””
