Chapter 6: The Door Closed Behind Them

Monique came back three days later.

She didn't knock.

She walked through the front door like she still owned the place.

I was in the living room with Caleb, helping him finish a science project involving a small homemade volcano.

The front door slammed.

Caleb flinched.

I stood immediately.

Monique walked into the room carrying two suitcases.

“You are not doing this to me.””

I looked at the bags.

“What are you talking about?””

“You froze our accounts.””

“I froze access to the family trust and company systems pending legal review.””

“You know exactly what you did.””

“I know exactly what you did.””

She stared at me.

Then she looked at Caleb.

Her expression changed.

For one second, I saw the woman I thought I married.

Then it disappeared.

“Caleb needs to come with me.””

He moved closer to my side.

“No.””

Monique's voice sharpened.

“Don't start this.””

I stepped between them.

“He's not going anywhere.””

“He's my son.””

“He's your son too.””

She smiled bitterly.

“You suddenly care?””

The question landed.

I let it.

Because there was truth inside it.

“I should have cared sooner.””

Caleb looked up at me.

Monique shook her head.

“You're destroying this family because you believe an eight-year-old's stories.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“You know children lie.””

“Children can lie.””

She stopped.

“But what you did was recorded.””

She looked at me.

“And documented.””

Her face tightened.

“And recorded again.””

Silence.

“And the financial conversations were captured too.””

Julian had told her this morning.

I could see the realization spread across her face.

She wasn't fighting me anymore.

She was calculating.

“Where is Julian?”” I asked.

She looked away.

“He's handling things.””

“Not anymore.””

Marcus had already sent formal notices to both of them.

Julian was no longer authorized to represent me or access any family business account.

He had also been removed from all trust-management functions pending legal proceedings.

Monique stared at me.

“You think this makes you safe?””

“No.””

I looked at Caleb.

“It makes him safer.””

Her eyes narrowed.

Then she said something I will never forget.

“You have no idea what your father put in place.””

I went still.

“What did you just say?””

She smiled.

“You think you know everything because some recordings made you angry.””

“What does my father have to do with this?””

She picked up one of her suitcases.

“Ask your lawyer.””

Then she walked toward the stairs.

I blocked her path.

“Your belongings are being packed and delivered. You aren't staying here.””

She laughed.

“This is my house too.””

“Not tonight.””

“This is where I live.””

“Not anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But I couldn't tell whether they were genuine.

“You're throwing your wife out?””

“I am protecting my son.””

She stepped closer.

“You'll regret choosing him over me.””

I looked at her.

“There was never supposed to be a choice.””

She had no response.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

Monique stood there for several seconds.

Then she looked at Caleb.

“Tell your father what you did.””

He didn't move.

She looked back at me.

“You've made him afraid of me.””

I answered quietly.

“No. You did.””

She walked out.

The door closed behind her.

I locked it.

Then I stood there with my hand on the deadbolt.

For a long time, I didn't move.

Caleb came up beside me.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Is she coming back?””

I crouched down.

“Not to hurt you.””

He searched my face.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

He nodded.

Then he hugged me.

I held him until the trembling stopped.

Later that evening, Marcus returned.

He carried another stack of papers.

“You were right about your father.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He anticipated this.””

He opened an old trust document.

There was a handwritten note attached to it.

My father's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

Marcus handed me the note.

I read it.

It said that the purpose of the trust was never simply to preserve money.

It was to protect the family from anyone who might put wealth above blood.

My eyes burned.

My father had been gone for years.

Yet somehow, he had left me one last warning.

Marcus continued.

“There is a provision here allowing you to remove designated managers for misconduct involving an heir.””

I looked at him.

“So Julian and Monique can't use the clause anymore.””

“Not once the evidence is formally entered.””

I closed my eyes.

Relief came slowly.

Then another realization hit me.

“Where's Julian now?””

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He placed his phone on the table.

A message had just arrived.

Julian wasn't running.

He was preparing.

The message contained a single sentence.

*You think the trust was the only thing I had access to?*

I read it twice.

Then a second message appeared.

*You should ask what happened to your mother’s house.*

My blood went cold.

May you like

The betrayal wasn't ending.

It was getting bigger.
