Chapter 7: The Secret Julian Kept Buried
For the first time in weeks, I felt something I thought I had lost forever.
Peace.
Not complete peace.
Not the kind where you forget what happened.
The kind where you finally stop pretending everything is okay.
Caleb was laughing again.
That mattered more than anything.
He started leaving his bedroom door open at night. He started asking me questions again. He started bringing me his drawings and explaining every tiny detail like he used to.
Those little things reminded me of what I almost lost.
Not money.
Not the mansion.
Not the business.
My son’s trust.
I would have traded everything I owned to get that back.
But Julian’s message was still sitting in my mind.
You should ask what happened to your mother’s house.
My mother’s house.
That sentence bothered me because Julian knew something I didn’t.
And secrets in families rarely stayed buried forever.
The next morning, I called Marcus.
“I need you to look into something.””
He already knew.
“Your mother’s property?””
I paused.
“How did you know?””
“Because I started researching after the message came in.””
I sat down.
“And?””
He was quiet for a moment.
“That’s the problem.””
I hated those words.
“What did you find?””
“Your mother’s house was transferred eight years ago.””
I frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
My mother’s home was supposed to stay in the family. It was the place where my brother and I grew up. The place where my father built his first dreams before he ever had money.
“My mother would never sell that house.””
“She didn’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who did?””
Marcus sighed.
“Julian.””
The room went silent.
I looked out the window.
For years, I had defended my brother.
I told people he was loyal.
I told people he was the reason my companies stayed organized.
I told myself he was family.
But family was not just who shared your blood.
Family was who protected what mattered to you.
And Julian had been taking pieces of mine while standing beside me.
“How did he transfer it?””
Marcus explained.
“After your mother passed, Julian was listed as temporary administrator for certain family matters because you were traveling and expanding your business.””
I closed my eyes.
I remembered that time.
I was building my first major company.
I was working sixteen-hour days.
I trusted Julian because I thought he was handling things I didn’t have time to handle.
“He used my absence.””
“Yes.””
“Can we get it back?””
“That depends.””
I hated that answer too.
“On what?””
“On proving fraudulent transfer.””
I leaned back.
“How much?””
Marcus looked through his notes.
“The property was sold below market value.””
“To who?””
Another pause.
Then he answered.
“A company connected to Julian.””
My hands tightened.
Of course.
It wasn't enough to betray me.
He had to profit from it.
That afternoon, I confronted him.
Not at my home.
Not around Caleb.
I met him at the old office building where we first started our company.
The same place where we used to eat cheap takeout and talk about becoming successful.
Funny how places can hold memories that people no longer deserve.
Julian was already there.
He looked tired.
Older.
But not sorry.
“You came.””
I sat across from him.
“Tell me about my mother’s house.””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I knew you’d find out eventually.””
“You stole it.””
He shook his head.
“Watch your words.””
“No.””
My voice stayed calm.
“I spent years defending you. I trusted you with my family. My money. My child.””
He looked away.
“Your child?””
That caught my attention.
“What does that mean?””
Julian leaned forward.
“You think everything happened because Monique wanted money?””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
He smiled sadly.
“You still don't understand.””
I felt anger rising.
“Then explain.””
He looked around the old office.
“Your father never trusted me.””
I didn't respond.
“Not completely.””
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
Julian laughed quietly.
“He loved me. But he always saw you as the future.””
I remembered that.
My father had always pushed me.
Not because he loved Julian less.
But because he believed I could carry responsibility.
Julian continued.
“Everything was built around you. The trust. The companies. The reputation.””
“So you destroyed my family because you were jealous?””
His face hardened.
“No.””
“Then why?””
He looked directly at me.
“Because I spent my whole life watching you get chosen.””
The honesty of that answer surprised me.
For a second, I saw my little brother again.
The kid standing behind me when we were young.
The kid who wanted to be seen.
But pain does not excuse betrayal.
“I gave you a place.””
“You gave me a job.””
“I gave you trust.””
“You gave me responsibility because you needed someone to carry what you didn’t want to handle.””
I stared at him.
That was the lie he had been telling himself.
That my trust was an insult.
That my success was an attack.
“And Monique?””
His jaw tightened.
“She understood.””
“She used you.””
“No.””
“She used your resentment.””
Silence.
Because somewhere inside, he knew.
I stood.
“I’m not your enemy, Julian.””
He looked at me.
“You are.””
I walked away.
But before I reached the door, he said something that stopped me.
“Ask Monique why she really married you.””
I turned.
“What?””
He didn't repeat it.
May you like
He just smiled.
And for the first time, I wondered if Monique’s betrayal had started long before Caleb was born.
