Chapter 4: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed

“Your father knew about her.””
My mother's confession hung in the hallway like smoke.
I stared at the photograph on my phone. Danielle sat in a hospital bed, her face thinner than I remembered, but unmistakably hers. Beside her stood a little girl with dark curls, round cheeks, and the same small dimple Danielle used to get whenever she smiled.
The child looked about five.
I zoomed in.
There was something familiar about her eyes.
“Who is she, Mom?””
Evelyn looked toward Lily's bedroom.
“Lower your voice.””
“I'm not asking you to lower yours. I'm asking you a question.””
She rubbed her forehead.
“Her name is Sophie.””
“Sophie what?””
“Danielle's daughter.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Danielle had another child?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she married you.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn't make sense. Danielle never mentioned another child.””
“Because she didn't want you to know.””
I shook my head.
“No. Danielle told me everything.””
My mother gave a bitter laugh.
“Did she? Apparently, you didn't know your wife very well.””
I wanted to slap the words out of her mouth.
Instead, I opened the photograph again.
“Who is the father?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Your father.””
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
“My father?””
“Robert had an affair with Danielle years before you met her.””
I stepped backward.
My father had been married to Evelyn for thirty-six years. He was the man who taught me to ride a bicycle, helped me with homework, and stood beside me when I opened my first construction office.
He wasn't perfect.
But he had never seemed capable of something like this.
“You're lying.””
“Believe whatever you want.””
“Why would Danielle keep his child?””
“Because she was young, frightened, and desperate. Robert promised he would help her. He paid for everything until she decided to marry you.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because the child complicated the inheritance.””
There it was.
Not grief.
Not betrayal.
Money.
I lowered my phone.
“What inheritance?””
Evelyn exhaled.
“Your father changed his will shortly before he died. He left a substantial portion of his private estate to Sophie.””
“How substantial?””
“Nearly six million dollars.””
I stared at her.
“And the company?””
“Your father left that to you.””
“Then why would Sophie matter?””
“Because Danielle discovered the second will. She believed she could use it to demand money and expose the affair.””
I laughed in disbelief.
“You mean she wanted her daughter's inheritance?””
“She wanted control.””
“No. She wanted what your husband promised her daughter.””
My mother flinched.
I had never spoken to Evelyn that way.
She took another step toward me.
“Marcus, listen carefully. Danielle was never supposed to come back. Everything was settled. Vanessa agreed to help us keep the family together.””
“Help you?””
“Your father had left debts. There were people waiting to collect. I needed time to protect the business.””
“And you used Vanessa?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She came to me. She knew about Danielle's past. She offered to help.””
I felt something inside me break.
“How did Vanessa know?””
“Because she was working with your father before he died.””
My father's name seemed to echo through the hallway.
I wanted to believe this was another lie.
But my mother was no longer trying to deny anything.
She was choosing which parts of the truth to reveal.
A small voice came from behind me.
“Dad?””
I turned.
Lily stood in her bedroom doorway, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were wet.
“Is Mommy really alive?””
I crouched immediately.
“Sweetheart…”
“I heard you say her name.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Yes,” I whispered.
“I think Mommy is alive.””
Lily began crying.
“Then why didn't she come back?””
I looked at my mother.
Evelyn stared at the floor.
I kissed the top of Lily's head.
“I'm going to find out.””
She pulled away slightly.
“Is the little girl in the picture my sister?””
I couldn't answer immediately.
Then I nodded.
“I think she might be.””
Lily looked at the photograph.
“She has Mommy's eyes.””
I held her closer.
Before I could say anything else, my phone rang.
Officer Collins.
“Mr. Hale, we need you to come to the station.””
“Is Thomas okay?””
“Mr. Reed is safe. He's provided some information, but there's been a development.””
“What development?””
“We located a vehicle registered to your mother. It appears to have been connected to the night your wife disappeared.””
I looked at Evelyn.
Her face had gone white.
Officer Collins continued.
“There's also a woman at the station who says she witnessed Danielle's removal from the road.””
“Who is she?””
There was a brief pause.
“Her name is Sophie Reed.””
I looked at the photograph again.
The little girl beside Danielle.
My supposed half-sister.
No.
The voice of a child came through the phone.
“Mr. Hale?””
It was a woman speaking.
“I'm sorry to call you like this. My name is Sophie. I'm Thomas Reed's daughter.””
I frowned.
“Thomas's daughter?””
“Yes. The little girl in that photograph is my daughter. Her name is also Sophie.””
I closed my eyes.
Too many lies.
Too many names.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Mr. Hale, your mother didn't just hide Danielle. She paid someone to make sure Danielle would never reach you again.””
I looked at Evelyn.
May you like
She was already reaching for her handbag.
And this time, I wasn't going to let her leave.
