Chapter 9: The Secret Behind My Daughter's Birth

I read Vanessa's message three times.

Each time, the words became more disturbing.

Danielle had asked Vanessa to marry me?

And Lily's real father?

I looked at Officer Collins.

“Can you delay the operation for five minutes?””

He frowned.

“Why?””

I showed him the messages.

He read them without speaking.

Then he handed my phone back.

“Do not believe anything she says until we verify it.””

“I know.””

But I couldn't ignore the possibility.

For two years, I had believed Danielle was dead. Every memory I had of her was now surrounded by questions.

What if there were more secrets?

What if I had never really known my own family?

I stepped into the kitchen and called Vanessa.

She answered almost immediately.

“I wondered how long it would take you.””

“Explain your message.””

She sighed.

“Danielle came to me before she disappeared.””

“When?””

“Three months before the accident.””

“What did she want?””

“She wanted me to look after you and Lily.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Believe whatever you want. But it's true.””

“Why would she ask you?””

“Because she knew something was coming. She knew your mother was dangerous, and she knew you wouldn't believe her if she told you the truth.””

I gripped the counter.

“Then why did you marry me?””

“Because I loved you.””

“Don't.””

“Marcus, I did love you.””

“You married me while helping my mother hide my first wife.””

Her voice broke.

“I didn't know what Evelyn intended to do to Danielle.””

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me bury an empty coffin.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why did you stay?””

“Because I thought I could fix everything.””

“By becoming my wife?””

She was silent.

Then she whispered, “Your mother promised me the company.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“There it is.””

“She said if I married you, I would have a future. She said Danielle would never come back, and that Lily needed a mother.””

“You were never supposed to be her mother.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you keep pretending?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

I took a breath.

“Tell me what you meant about Lily's father.””

Her voice changed.

“Ask Evelyn.””

“I'm asking you.””

“Danielle told me that Lily might not be yours.””

My hands went cold.

“What?””

“She said she had been seeing someone before you got married.””

“That's impossible.””

“Is it?””

I remembered Lily's birth.

The hospital room.

Danielle holding our newborn daughter.

The way she cried when I first held Lily.

There had never been any doubt.

“Who was the man?””

Vanessa whispered a name.

“Richard Bell.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The doctor.

The same man who had signed Danielle's false medical records.

“No.””

“I'm sorry, Marcus.””

“You're lying.””

“Then ask for a DNA test.””

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I stood motionless.

Officer Collins entered the kitchen.

“What happened?””

I told him.

He listened carefully.

Then he said something I desperately needed to hear.

“People who are losing control will say anything to make you doubt yourself.””

I nodded.

“But we should verify it.””

He was right.

I wouldn't let Vanessa turn my daughter into another weapon.

A few minutes later, Thomas arrived with Sophie and her little girl.

He looked exhausted.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

I nodded.

We sat in the dining room while Officer Collins kept watch near the front door.

Thomas placed a thick envelope on the table.

“Danielle asked me to give you this if Vanessa ever mentioned Lily's father.””

I stared at him.

“What is it?””

“Your daughter's birth records.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were hospital documents, a copy of Danielle's prenatal records, and a sealed laboratory report.

The report was dated seven years earlier.

My name appeared at the top.

*Paternity Confirmation: Marcus Hale.*

I stared at it.

Then I read the conclusion.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

Thomas nodded.

“Danielle knew Vanessa would try this.””

“Why would she have a DNA test?””

“Because Evelyn questioned the pregnancy.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“Your mother told Danielle that Lily couldn't be yours because you had been diagnosed with a fertility problem years earlier.””

I remembered the doctor visit.

It had happened shortly before Danielle became pregnant.

The specialist had told me that conceiving naturally might be difficult, but not impossible.

I had never discussed it with my mother.

“Who told Evelyn?””

Thomas looked toward Sophie.

She spoke quietly.

“Dr. Bell.””

I leaned back.

“So Bell was involved before Lily was even born?””

Thomas nodded.

“He was treating your father. He also had access to private medical records.””

I looked at the report again.

“Why would my mother want to convince me Lily wasn't mine?””

Thomas's answer was immediate.

“Because your father had written something into the second will.””

He opened another document.

It was a letter from Robert Hale.

If Marcus has a child, that child must inherit alongside him. No matter what Evelyn believes about the circumstances of the child's birth.

I stared at the sentence.

Thomas continued.

“Your mother wanted to challenge Lily's inheritance. If she could convince you that Lily wasn't your biological daughter, she could claim the trust should be managed differently.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Lily was sitting with Sophie's daughter, showing her the drawing of Danielle.

I felt a wave of anger so strong I had to stand.

“She tried to take my daughter away from me.””

Thomas nodded.

“And she tried to take Sophie from Danielle.””

Sophie lowered her eyes.

“My mother spent years telling me I was unwanted. She said Danielle had chosen to leave me.””

Her little girl climbed onto her lap.

Sophie kissed her hair.

“I believed her for a long time.””

I looked at Thomas.

“Why did Danielle trust you so much?””

He gave a sad smile.

“Because I was the only person who believed her when she said she wasn't crazy.””

He pulled another photograph from the envelope.

It showed Danielle sitting on a park bench with Lily.

Lily was about four years old.

Danielle was laughing.

On the back was a message.

The girls deserve to grow up together.

I stared at it.

“Where was this taken?””

“Outside the courthouse. Danielle had managed to get a supervised visit with Lily shortly before she disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Thomas nodded.

“Evelyn told you Danielle never tried to see her daughter. That wasn't true.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Danielle had been sitting only a few feet from Lily.

My daughter had been able to see her mother.

And I hadn't known.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because the visit was arranged through a family court officer who was working with your mother.””

I sat down.

The entire world seemed built on lies.

Then Officer Collins entered.

“We have a problem.””

He placed his phone on the table.

A live security image showed the entrance of Halcyon Storage.

A black SUV had just arrived.

The driver stepped out.

Vanessa.

She opened the rear door.

A second person emerged.

An older woman in a beige coat.

My mother.

But that wasn't what made me stand.

A third person stepped out of the vehicle.

A young girl.

Dark curls.

The same dimple as Danielle.

Sophie gasped.

“That's my daughter.””

Thomas immediately grabbed his phone.

“She's supposed to be here!””

I looked at the screen.

My mother was holding the little girl's hand.

Then she turned toward the camera.

As if she knew we were watching.

She smiled.

Officer Collins spoke into his radio.

“Abort the original entry plan. We have a child inside.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Evelyn.

Marcus, if you want to see your family together again, come without the police.

A second message followed.

It contained a photograph of Lily's bedroom.

My daughter's bed was empty.

I looked toward the hallway.

“Where's Lily?””

Nobody answered.

I ran upstairs.

Her stuffed rabbit lay on the carpet.

The window was open.

May you like

And on her pillow was a note written in my mother's handwriting.

*You should have listened to your mother.*
