Chapter 10: The Truth She Never Wanted Me to Know
“Suspect: Adrian Hart.””
The words sat at the bottom of the report like a sentence handed down by a judge.
I stared at them.
Then I looked at my husband.
Adrian's face had gone blank.
“No,” he whispered.
The officer stepped closer.
“Mr. Hart, I need you to step away from the table.””
Adrian didn't move.
“Officer, that report isn't what you think.””
“Then explain it.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Tell her.””
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“I can't.””
“You can.””
“You were there.””
“Yes,” Adrian said.
“But you know what happened after.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Stop talking around me.””
Both men fell silent.
I placed one hand over my stomach.
The baby kicked.
Hard.
My daughter was still there.
Still safe.
Still unaware that the people surrounding her had spent months turning her existence into a battlefield.
I looked at the officer.
“Show me the entire report.””
He hesitated.
Then handed it to me.
The first page described the incident.
The second page contained a timeline.
January 16.
9:42 a.m.—Olivia Hart arrives at Westbrook.
10:07 a.m.—Camille Reed enters treatment wing.
10:19 a.m.—Adrian Hart arrives.
10:26 a.m.—Argument reported in Room 4.
10:31 a.m.—Olivia Hart found unconscious.
10:34 a.m.—Adrian Hart leaves the room.
10:41 a.m.—Security records interrupted.
I looked up.
“What happened at 10:41?””
The officer frowned.
“The camera feed was corrupted.””
“Convenient.””
He nodded grimly.
I turned the page.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*Patient stated she was afraid of her husband.*
My blood ran cold.
“Who wrote this?””
The officer checked the signature.
“Dr. Cole.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Did I say that?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My heart broke.
“You heard me say I was afraid of you.””
“Yes.””
“And you still didn't tell anyone?””
“I thought you were confused.””
“Because you had just found out about Camille?””
“Yes.””
“Because you thought I cheated on you?””
“Yes.””
He swallowed.
“But I never touched you.””
The officer looked at him.
“That's not what this report says.””
Adrian pointed at the timeline.
“Look at the time.””
“What about it?””
“I left the room at 10:34.””
“And?””
“The report says Olivia was found unconscious at 10:31.””
The officer frowned.
I read it again.
10:31.
Adrian leaves at 10:34.
Three minutes later.
I looked at Ethan.
“You said Adrian was the reason I was there.””
“I said you were running from him.””
“That doesn't mean he hurt me.””
Ethan looked away.
“Then tell me what you aren't telling me.””
He was silent.
I stepped toward him.
“You spent five years pretending to be dead. You followed my family. You knew about Westbrook.
You knew about the embryos. You came back tonight claiming you were protecting me.””
I pointed at the report.
“So tell me the truth.””
Ethan finally looked at me.
“I saw Camille attack you.””
The room went still.
Adrian closed his eyes.
I stared.
“What?””
Ethan's voice cracked.
“I arrived at Westbrook because I had discovered what she was doing.””
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“She found out I was investigating.””
“And?””
“She was furious.””
He swallowed.
“She told you the pregnancy was yours. She told you Adrian wanted to take your baby away. She wanted you terrified enough to sign something.””
My pulse raced.
“What?””
“A transfer agreement.””
“Transfer of what?””
“Your embryos.””
I remembered the folder.
My signature.
The forged consent.
The missing day.
“What did she do to me?””
Ethan's face tightened.
“She put something in your drink.””
The room became silent.
“Drugged,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“Then why did the report say Adrian was the suspect?””
“Because Camille changed the security records.””
I looked at Adrian.
He nodded slowly.
“When I found Olivia unconscious, I thought she was dying.””
His voice shook.
“I picked her up and screamed for help.””
I stared at him.
“You left the room.””
“To get a doctor.””
“Why didn't the camera see that?””
“Because Camille pulled the power.””
The officer turned toward Ethan.
“Do you have proof?””
Ethan reached into his coat.
He pulled out a second drive.
“This is the backup footage.””
The officer took it immediately.
Within minutes, he was watching a portable screen.
Nobody spoke.
I watched my own past unfold.
There I was.
Walking into Westbrook.
Camille approached me.
We spoke.
Then she handed me a bottle of water.
A few minutes later, I stumbled.
My body weakened.
Camille caught me.
Then lowered me into a chair.
She looked around.
And smiled.
Not the nervous woman I had seen earlier.
Not the crying woman who claimed she had been helping Adrian.
The real Camille.
Cold.
Focused.
Deliberate.
I watched her pull documents from a bag.
She placed them on the table.
Then pressed my limp hand onto a page.
She moved my fingers over the signature line.
My skin crawled.
The officer stopped the video.
“That's forgery.””
Ethan nodded.
“I have the original recording.””
My eyes stayed on the frozen image.
Camille had stolen my identity.
Not because she loved Adrian.
Because she wanted something far more valuable.
My child.
The officer continued the footage.
Adrian entered the room.
He saw me unconscious.
Camille turned toward him.
They argued.
Adrian grabbed the documents from her.
Then he picked me up.
Camille screamed.
Adrian carried me out.
The footage ended.
I looked at my husband.
“You saved me.””
He didn't answer.
“I thought you wanted me gone.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I did something unforgivable.””
I waited.
“I cheated on you.””
He said it plainly.
“No excuse.””
My throat tightened.
“I was angry. I was jealous. I was ashamed that I might never give you a child. Camille knew exactly what to say to a frightened man.””
He looked at my stomach.
“She convinced me you had betrayed me.””
“And you believed her.””
“Yes.””
A single tear rolled down my cheek.
“You broke my heart anyway.””
“I know.””
“Even if she manipulated you, you still chose her.””
He nodded.
“I did.””
For the first time, I believed him.
Not because his betrayal was smaller.
But because he finally stopped trying to make it smaller.
Then I looked at Ethan.
“There is still one thing.””
He nodded.
“Camille's pregnancy.””
His expression changed.
“She isn't pregnant with Adrian's baby.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“The pregnancy test was real.””
“Then whose baby?””
Ethan looked at the officer.
Then at me.
“A donor embryo.””
I frowned.
“Whose?””
He took out another document.
I read the genetic report.
The embryo had no connection to Adrian.
No connection to me.
It had been purchased through Westbrook's private network.
Camille had never been carrying Adrian's child.
She had used the pregnancy to control him.
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I finally understood.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
“About everything.””
“Almost everything.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Almost?””
He hesitated.
“There was one thing she told you that was true.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She was pregnant.””
I stared.
“The transfer worked.””
My heart stopped.
“But you just said she wasn't carrying Adrian's baby.””
“She isn't.””
“Then what happened to her pregnancy?””
Ethan slid another report across the table.
*Pregnancy ended naturally — January 19.*
I looked at the date.
Three days after my procedure.
Three days after she tried to steal my embryo.
The note beneath it said:
*Transferred embryo not genetically compatible with recipient.*
I closed my eyes.
My baby was never in Camille.
My daughter had remained inside me all along.
The supposed second pregnancy had been another lie.
Another weapon.
Another reason to make Adrian choose her.
I breathed out slowly.
Then I remembered one final thing.
My phone.
The anonymous messages.
The nurse.
The photographs.
“Who contacted me?””
Ethan smiled faintly.
“Dr. Cole.””
“But he was supposed to be dead.””
“He was hiding.””
“Why?””
“Because Camille wasn't his only problem.””
I looked at him.
“Who was?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then handed me one final file.
Inside was a letter.
From my mother.
I recognized her handwriting immediately.
My eyes moved across the page.
*Olivia,*
*I have spent years trying to protect you from the mistakes your father and I made. I helped build the foundation that became Westbrook. When I discovered what they were doing, I tried to get out. I failed.*
*I knew about your embryos. I knew they were being targeted. And when you discovered the truth, I was too late to stop what happened.*
*Adrian did not create this nightmare. But he became part of it when he chose Camille. I cannot forgive him for that. Neither should you have to.*
*But your daughter was never theirs to claim. She was always yours.*
I wiped my eyes.
At the bottom was a final line.
*And there is one thing I never told you: your father left the controlling shares of the foundation to your unborn child.*
I stared at the page.
“What?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your daughter inherits everything.””
The officer looked stunned.
Adrian looked at me.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The money.
The embryos.
The forged documents.
The pregnancy.
The obsession.
They weren't fighting over Adrian.
They were fighting over my daughter.
Her inheritance.
Her future.
And everyone who had lied to me had underestimated one thing.
I was her mother.
The next morning, Camille was arrested at the hospital.
Dr. Cole surrendered with the original records.
Westbrook was shut down.
The altered files were recovered.
My mother's testimony opened an investigation into the foundation my parents had once helped build.
And Adrian?
He didn't ask me to forgive him.
He didn't ask me to come home.
He simply stood outside the hospital room the day our daughter was born.
When I woke after delivery, I found him sitting beside the window.
He was crying.
A nurse placed our baby in my arms.
She was tiny.
Warm.
Perfect.
A little tuft of dark hair rested against her forehead.
I looked at Adrian.
“You can come closer.””
He hesitated.
Then approached.
He stared at our daughter.
“Our daughter.””
I shook my head gently.
“No.””
His face fell.
Then I smiled.
“My daughter.””
He nodded through his tears.
“Yes.””
For the first time, he understood.
Love wasn't a promise.
It wasn't a ring.
It wasn't a photograph on a shelf.
It was what you did when nobody was watching.
And Adrian had taught me the hardest lesson of my life.
Some people only realize what they have lost after they've already destroyed it.
He reached toward the baby's tiny hand.
I let him touch her finger.
She curled her hand around his.
He broke down.
I looked at my daughter.
At the woman I had been.
At the woman I had survived becoming.
And I realized the truth had never been about who would choose me.
It was about whether I would finally choose myself.
So I did.
I left the marriage.
I kept my daughter.
I rebuilt my life.
And months later, when I held her beside the nursery window and watched the sunrise wash over her face, I finally understood why she had kicked inside me that night.
She wasn't warning me.
She was reminding me.
I still had someone worth fighting for.
And no matter how many lies they built around us…
They could never take away the truth.
May you like
She was mine.
And I was finally free.
